Former 'Crocodile Hunter' bodyguard, Noke rolls over Camozzi at UFC 127

During the many chapters of his life, Kyle Noke has seen it all. He's looking to make the MMA chapter his most interesting. A former bodyguard for Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, Noke stormed to a 3-0 mark in the UFC after an easy win tonight over Chris Camozzi in the pay-per-view opener at UFC 127.

A native of New South Wales, Australia, Noke served as one of Irwin's bodyguards for three years and also worked with his Aussie brother on his martial arts skills. Irwin, who passed away in 2006, was a huge MMA fan.

"Strong, very strong," Noke told MMAjunkie.com of Irwin's ability. "He had that strength from wrestling crocs all his life from pulling them in and holding them tight. We'd never let him get on top because he would just hold you down as tight as he could."

Irwin did more than employ Noke, he backed his fighting efforts.

"He's one of the reasons why I'm here where I am now. He sponsored me and paid for my first flights to the States. He really pushed me to follow my career and follow my passion," Noke told the Sydney Morning Herald. "He used to help us prepare for fights. He had such an eye for detail through what he had been doing for so many years. You only have to watch the guy on TV to know how much passion the guy has got. If I could channel that passion in fighting for wildlife then that's a great start."

Irwin was an MMA devotee and according to Noke, The reality star even entertained fighting and donating the proceeds to charity.

Noke looked inspired from the opening seconds. Camozzi charged him for a single-leg takedown attempt, but the Aussie thwarted the effort with some underhooks. He showed his power by pushing forward, scoring a takedown and falling into the mount position. Camozzi did a solid job of avoiding big shots for a few seconds, but allowed Noke to crawl up his body.

Noke (19-4-1, 3-0 UFC) appeared to be setting up an armbar or inverted triangle when Camozzi tried to escape out the backdoor. Noke was quick to react by taking Camozzi's back. The Aussie flattened out Camozzi and tapped him with a rear-naked choke at 1:35 of the first.

Camozzi was a familiar opponent for Noke. They were castmates on Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter." Noke lost via unanimous decision to Kris McCray during the TUF 11 quarterfinals, but he appeared to be one of the better prospects on the show.

Fighting out of Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, Noke, 30, is just moving into his prime. He has a well-rounded game and a chance to do some damage in the UFC.

UFC 127 Confidence Pool and Betting Game Results

UFC_127_poster_180_14_1.jpg
By: Rich Hansen, MMA Torch Columnist:

It's over. It's ALL over.

BETTING GAME RESULTS

Finally, the inept reign of the decrepit Cambo "Rambo" Nelson is behind us. The 8 time defending Betting Champion (or was it 9, I don't know, I don't care anymore!!!) has been defeated. After consistently defending his victory with bad performances against challengers who were even weaker than himself, the power of Zero was just too much to overcome. Mr. (or is it Mrs.) Nelson laid a goose egg, a rotten, fetid, stinky goose egg. And as a result, our new Betting Game Champion is Mr. Nick Center. Nick not only defeated the so-called champion, but he turned a profit as well. Of course, he only got one bet correct, so let's not start, um, well, there's a funny movie line you can extrapolate from here.

Cambo Nelson: $0, Zilch, Nada, Bankrupt, back of the line, you?re broke, pal
$300 on Rivera for $0
$200 on Reinhardt for $0
$150 on Te-Huna for $0
$150 on Camozzi for $0
$200 parlay on Fitch, Sotiropoulos, and Lytle for $0

Nick Center: $1020
$400 on Perosh for $1020
$300 on Camozzi for $0
$200 on Jewtuszko for $0
$100 parlay on Bisping, Lytle, and Zhang for $0

CONFIDENCE GAME RESULTS

The Confidence Game featured inept performances by champion and challenger as well, although neither champion nor challenger got a great big zero, Cambo. But I digress. Congratulations to the Dutchman Skarz. You scored 26 out of a possible 78 points, and prevented the aforementioned Nick Center from becoming a simultaneous dual champion, as his 25 points just wasn't enough to dethrone you, sir. Don't get too proud there Skarz, as only 6 players in the pool scored lower than your point total. You're going to need to pick it up, sir!

Skarz accumulated his 26 points in the following manner: Bisping for 8, Pearson for 7, Gustafsson for 6, and Zhang for 5.

Center got his 25 points with the following picks: Bisping for 9, Gustafsson for 6, Ring for 5, Pearson for 4, and Perosh for 1. That illustrates the importance of weighting the fighters properly. Skarz picked 4 fights correctly.

CONFIDENCE GAME POOL

UFC 127 had 36 players. Listed below are the 24 fighters on the UFC 127 card, along with a number representing how many players picked each fighter to win.

Lytle 35, Ebersole 1. Whoops
Tuchscherer 34, Hunt 2. Whoops.
Sotiropoulos 34, Siver 3. Whoops.
Gustafsson 31, Te-Huna 5. Sanity restored.
Noke 32 Camozzi 8. That?s more like it.
Jewtuszko 24, Warburton 12. Uh oh.
Ring 24, Fukuda 12. I don't care, Fukuda won that fight.
Bisping 24, Rivera 12. 1.) They are both reprehensible. 2.) 12 of you are stooopid.
Zhang 24, Reinhardt 12: They brought Reinhardt to lose, and he still got 12 picks...
Pearson 24, Fisher 12. I hated their fight.
Fitch 24, Penn 12. Draw, which I will address below.
Blackledge 21, Perosh 15. Meh

OK. There was a draw. For the confidence game, just like with Edgar vs. Maynard, ALL picks on Penn or Fitch in the Confidence Game are LOSING PICKS. No points are awarded for either fighter.

With no further ado, here are the results of the pool. Congratulations to Daniel Moore! Because Fitch did not win, you were able to maintain a one point lead over Dionicio Ortiz. Ortiz would have earned 10 points on a Fitch win to 5 for Moore, which would have resulted in an Ortiz victory. Better luck at UFC 128, Dionicio!

Daniel Moore: 45
Dionicio Ortiz, Shaun Godric Louis: 44
Todd Daigle: 41
Tyson Kubas: 40
Clay Burley, TJ Brown: 39
Danny Mellor: 38
clarkiefromcanada: 37
Avery Clarke, Evan Ottem: 36
Rich Hansen, Ryan Wankel: 35
Jamie Penick, Kaleb Lipinski, Mark Barrowcliffe: 34
Brent King, Kevin Seng, Matt Pelkey: 31
John Jickman, Chris Wallner, Bryan Payne: 30
Michael Roberts, lightning101: 29
Jason Binder: 28
Michael Wallen, Corry Potter: 27
Drew Rothstein: 26
Sam Berkenbile: 24
Chris Moore, Casey Vaccaro: 22
Simon: 20
Voiceinthedesert, Cambo Nelson: 18

BETTING GAME POOL:

Now let's address the draw. All straight bets on Fitch or Penn were refunded. If you bet $50 on B.J. Penn but lost all of your other bets, your total payout is $50. If you had Fitch or Penn in a 3 fighter parlay, the parlay ignores that fight and it becomes a 2 fight parlay. If you had a 2 fight parlay with either of those fighters, it becomes a straight bet on whoever was the other fighter in that parlay.

This is the part I've wanted to avoid. We had 40 players in the betting pool. 11 of those 40 turned a profit, and most of those profits were tiny. Interestingly, had B.J. Penn and Jorge Rivera won their fights, clarkiefromcanada, who had both fighters in a parlay along with Dennis Siver, would have had a payout of more than $11,600. Instead, his payout was less than his original $1000.

Another interesting tidbit on our collective suckitude is that of the 29 bettors who made parlay bets, only one person hit their parlay. Daniel Moore hit on a Warburton, Pearson, Fitch parlay. And of course, that becomes a 2-team parlay once Fitch is removed. Yuck.

That was interesting, but unimportant. What is important, though, is to announce that Tyson "Kubi" Kubas won the Betting Game Pool, and will challenge the new champion Nick Center at UFC 128. Kubi was the only participant to more than double his investment. Good job, Kubi!

Tyson ?Kubi? Kubas: $2255
$500 on Siver for $2000
$100 on Perosh for $255

Performer of the Night: We have a couple of good choices this time. Kubi was the best bettor, Daniel Moore made the best picks. I give the nod to Daniel Moore, because he was very good in the bets, even though he didn?t win. Good job, you bloody wanker, or however you Brits greet each other (minus the beer and drunken barfights while debating whether Man U or Man City is best?).

Goat of the Night: Cambo, oh Cambo. How could you.

UFC QUOTABLES: Dana White asks why Fedor would fight in the UFC when he can "make millions getting beat up" in Strikeforce

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_TB150_23.jpg
"I've been saying it for a long time. I've had all these goofy reporters arguing with me about where [Fedor] stands in the pound-for-pound list, and his fans just need to deal with it. Deal with the fact that he's not one of the best in the world, he's not. It's over, and as great as this guy was, it's what I was saying, all that was back in 2005. It's not 2005 any more. The guy's inactive, hasn't fought anybody good in a long time, and... he looks old and it's over. It is what it is.?

You just can?t do business with [M-1 Global]. And they've made it very clear, even before he got beat up twice, that they don't want to fight the guys in the UFC. They don't want to. Why would you want to come in here? You saw what happened to him the last two fights. Why would you want to come in here and fight these heavyweights when you can go over there and make a couple million bucks getting beat up by guys that aren't good."

-UFC President Dana White talks to Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com and gives his thoughts on Fedor Emelianenko's latest loss to Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva earlier this month.

Penick's Analysis: As with most of White's commentary on this subject, he makes solid points but also negates some of it by saying he "hasn't fought anybody good" in a long time. Andrei Arlovski was good when he beat him. He was beat by two fighters who can compete in the UFC's heavyweight division. Werdum did compete in the heavyweight division, and left the UFC because the UFC didn't want to pay him what he felt he was worth. Granted, he got blasted by Junior Dos Santos, but so have a number of guys that the UFC still promotes. And Bigfoot, with only two losses in his career, would be a very good addition to the UFC in the future, so saying they aren't good fighters doesn't do anyone any good. But his points about Fedor not being the best in the world anymore and dealing with a difficult group in M-1 Global are solid, and it's true that there was more money for M-1 in taking the fights in Strikeforce than there would be right now in the UFC. However, had they gone with the UFC in 2009 when they reportedly offered him more than any fighter on the UFC's roster, he would have made more overall for a pay-per-view fight with Brock Lesnar at the time, even if he would have lost. It's too late to know for sure now, but it is true that Fedor is no longer the greatest heavyweight in the world. He was for a long time, but that time has passed.

UFC QUOTABLES: Jorge Rivera says he knew Michael Bisping would bite on UFC 127 trash talk

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_799.jpg
"Honestly, when we asked for the fight, the people at the UFC were like, 'He might not take it. His camp might not take it.' I was like, 'Don't worry about it. I'll make sure he'll take it.' I knew he was going to bite. He took the fight and then I knew he was going to keep on talking...

I watch guys like Chael Sonnen, who was basically going through the same thing. He was a good fighter not getting the notoriety that he wanted. He starts talking a little bit, and the whole world starts watching. I'm thinking to myself, that's the one thing that I feel MMA can learn from boxing. We have to be able to get people to want to watch this fight. Nobody wants to watch something more than two people who don't like each other...

This is how I make my living. Yeah, I want to be known. Yeah, I want to have exciting fights. Yeah, I'm going to bring it every single time. I want to be recognized for that. So let me hype it up a little bit and watch me deliver on it."

-Jorge Rivera talks to Sherdog.com about the reasonings behind his verbal sparring with Michael Bisping ahead of UFC 127.

Penick's Analysis: Rivera certainly accomplished what he wanted to ahead of this fight. He got Bisping riled up, and we'll see on Saturday whether he did enough to throw Bisping off his game. But for a fight that didn't have a ton of heat or interest, he's certainly made it a more appealing and interesting fight than it was initially. So now he just needs to back up his trash talk with a good performance on Saturday in Australia.

Bellator wants you to spend Saturday nights with them

Bellator Fighting Championships kicks off its fourth season on the first weekend of March, and again, they'll be on a new network and on a new night. MTV2 will air Bellator's fights live on Saturday nights starting Mar. 5.

The good news is that the tournament-based promotion will be live, something they didn't have with Fox Sports, their previous home. The bad news is that Saturday nights are owned by the UFC and Strikeforce. Will Bellator face a conflict?

"That's part of the magic we have here," [Bellator CEO Bjorn] Rebney said. "When I was sitting down with the MTV folks, they said, 'Look, if there's a big UFC event, if there's a pay-per-view event, we'll kick our show an hour or two earlier so that it can be an MMA night for fans.' They can go from MTV2 to Spike TV or go from MTV2 to pay-per-view.

Bellator's hope is that MMA fans can make a night of it. For MTV and Spike's parent company, Viacom, this is a dream come true. Fans can stay with their company for hours of MMA watching. On Mar. 19, for example, a fight can watch Bellator's event in Oklahoma before tuning into UFC 128.

But Bellator will run into Strikeforce trouble on their very first week. The same night that Bellator kicks off their welterweight tourney in California, Strikeforce will put two belts on the line in Ohio, and in their regular timeslot, the two would conflct for an hour.

Can B.J. Penn pull a repeat performance?

In his last fight and his first fight at welterweight since losing the lightweight title, B.J. Penn quickly disposed of MMA legend Matt Hughes at UFC 123.

But though Hughes was one of the best welterweight fighters ever in the UFC, it's been a while since he was in his prime. This weekend, Penn will face a fighter in his prime: Jon Fitch.

Fitch uses his wrestling background to smother opponents. It's not the most exciting style, but it's effective. He hasn't lost since August of 2008, when he dropped a decision to champ Georges St. Pierre. Of Penn's recent losses, all three are in fights with opponents who used their wrestling skills to their advantage.

But as the video shows, that doesn't mean that Penn can't knock out a wrestler, as Hughes proudly touts wrestling as his base. What do you think will happen this weekend? Will Penn be able to stop Fitch's wrestling?

UFC NEWS: UFC 129 officially sold out with 55,000 tickets sold, gate and attendance records will be shattered (UPDATED)

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_129_poster_180_2.jpg
April's UFC 129 event in Toronto is poised to smash the North American record for gate and attendance for an MMA event, as MMAJunkie.com reports that the event has officially sold out for the Rogers Centre.

The event, headlined by a Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, was initially configured for 42,000 fans, but those tickets sold out on the first day of pre-sale this week. The organization made more tickets available for the general public, and as of today the event is fully sold out with nearly 55,000 tickets sold.

It's not likely that the UFC will release any more tickets for the event, as the layout will not allow for much more with them wanting to keep the feel of a UFC event in this new stadium experience. Officials earlier this week stated they believed 50,000 would be their limit, but they've allowed for a bit more over that.

The previous attendance record for the UFC was set at UFC 124 in December in Montreal with 23,152 attendees. The North American attendance record for MMA was set by FEG's Dynamite USA event in 2007 with a reported 42,757 in attendance, although over 90 percent of those tickets were comped.

The record gate for an MMA event in North America is $5.4 million for UFC 66, set back in December of 2006 for the rematch between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

This event marks the UFC's first ever trip to Toronto, with the Canadian Province of Ontario beginning regulation just this year, and the event will shatter both records.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Although scalpers surely ate up a ton of tickets and will be looking to re-sell them at a much higher premium, the attendance record is going to be well surpassed come fight night. The gate is already shattered with the UFC selling their entire allotment, and it's likely to go well over $10 million for this event. The UFC will be hoping that all goes well for fans and that the experience, while certainly unique, will not be dampened by the stadium. If this event is a hit with fans, you can certainly expect to see the UFC bring a big fight to a major stadium again in the future. Should GSP get past Jake Shields, and should this experience prove to be a hit, you better believe the UFC will be giving Cowboy Stadium a serious look for a fight between Anderson Silva and GSP late in the year. This is a massive achievement for the UFC, and this will be a historic night for the sport and the organization.

UPDATE: Initial reports had the estimated tickets sold at 52,000, but that number has been elevated to 55,000 after UFC officials finished tallying today's ticket sales. The gate is expected to be close to $11 million for this event, more than doubling the previous record for an MMA event.

UFC 127 prelims on ION and Facebook

It looks like fans win out again at UFC 127 with more "free" fights. The promotion is throwing a total of four fights on the combination of Facebook and Ion.

Visit the UFC's Facebook page hit "like" at 8 p.m. ET to watch Jason Reinhardt battle Tiequan Zhang plus Tom Blackledge against Aussie Anthony Perosh.

At 9 p.m. ET, Facebook will air Alexander Gutstafsson against James Te Huna and Ross Pearson trying to bounce back against Spencer Fisher on ION.

According to MMAjunkie, the first ION telecast of UFC 125 delivered pretty well with 829,000 viewers. That's half of Spike's normal numbers but the ION deal wasn't announced until a few days before the event and certainly doesn't have the coverage that Spike has and isn't well known to most television viewers.

The photos are from today's UFC 127 workout at Star City Casino.

UFC and GSP cautioning fans, don't look past Shields

The Canadian media was excited to finally see the UFC officially land in Toronto. Dana White and Georges St. Pierre were on hand to push the Apr. 30 card at Rogers Centre. The slate is loaded with Jose Aldo and up to 42,000 may pack the giant stadium. Plus there's going to be cool innovations, like eight massive viewing screens for the fans. And oh yeah, Jake Shields will be there too.

With the talk around swirling about a potential superfight between UFC welterweight champ GSP and middleweight champ Anderson Silva, the welterweight title challenger is an afterthought for many right now. So when the questions about GSP-Silva starting flowing forth at the UFC 129 press conference, the fighter and promoter both said "hold your horses."

"You put me on the spot, now," (St. Pierre) said with a laugh, according to the Canadian Press (VIDEO). "I'm not sure, I don't even know what's going to happen after this fight (with Shields). I'm taking one thing at a time."

White went into sales mode, talking about Shield's win over Dan Henderson and his unbeaten streak dating back to 2005.

"This guy's so stealth it's unbelievable," White said. "But that's how (Shield's) been his whole career."

St. Pierre got full of himself when he first won the UFC title back in 2006. There's was talk of him being unbeatable. He listened and had to learned a lesson.

"This thing for me, I take it (Silva talk) like a distraction from my fight. My immediate goal is to win against Jake Shields," said St. Pierre. "I made a mistake in the past, looking past an opponent. And I'm never going to do it again, because last time I did that I got beat by Matt Serra."

Let him get this win, against one of the top grapplers in MMA, out of the way first.

"For me it would be foolish to look past Jake Shields," he added. "I don't know what's going to happen. Maybe it's going to happen or maybe it's not going to happen -- this super-fight. I will see. . . It's too complicated to say. We'll need to wait until after Jake Shields to talk about it."

Both fighters raved about Silva's win over Belfort. Shields (26-4-1, 1-0 UFC) said Silva's front kick KO was par for the course from the champ. St. Pierre called him a "true mixed martial artist."

UFC NEWS: Kenny Florian dropping down to featherweight division

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FlorianKenny_CG_150_41.jpg
Two-time Lightweight Title challenger Kenny Florian is officially making the drop to the featherweight division.

Florian revealed the move to his MMA Live colleague Franklin McNeil late Monday night, and is expecting to make his debut in the division as early as this June.

"I started playing around with the idea: could I make 145? Originally, I didn't think it was possible," Florian said. "I spoke with a few nutritionists, got their opinions, told them what my body fat was, my walking-around weight, all that stuff and the general consensus was that it was very possible.

"I put a lot of thought into it, spoke with my coaches and everybody involved and decided that I am going to try it. I'm going to go for it."

According to Florian and his manager Malki Kawa, they are looking to fight a top guy in the featherweight division in order for him to prove himself as a 145 lb. fighter before pursuing a title opportunity. Florian says the UFC is behind him on the move, but he's not looking for it to be a permanent move.

"[The UFC] is very supportive," Florian said. "They're very excited about the move. I've spoken to [UFC president] Dana White, [matchmakers] Joe Silva and Sean Shelby -- they're all excited. And I'm excited. I'm very motivated.

"For me it's first things first. My goal is to get the 145-pound belt, and then go up to 155 and challenge for that belt as well."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a great move for Florian. After challenging for the Lightweight Title twice and failing to capture it, a rebirth in the featherweight division could be just what he needs. A bout between Florian and Chad Mendes sounds highly appealing, as do bouts for Florian against Dustin Poirier or Erik Koch. Those would be my top three choices, and Florian would likely get a title shot with a win over any of them.

An initial report from the "Enterprise News" states Lauzon was stabbed with a knife on the top of his shoulder during a fight with a group of men in the club's parking lot at around 1 a.m. ET.

Lauzon's name subsequently was removed from the report, but his older brother, current UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon, confirmed the incident via his personal blog.

UFC NEWS: Josh Grispi vs. George Roop on tap for TUF 13 Finale in June

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Josh_Grispi_180_2.jpeg
A featherweight bout between Josh Grispi and George Roop is headed to The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale this June, according to multiple published reports.

The 22-year-old Grispi is out to regain some momentum after he was completely derailed by Dustin Poirier in his UFC debut at UFC 125 in January. The exciting young fighter had won ten straight fights, including four in the WEC, heading into his UFC debut, and was even tapped to face Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo in the UFC's first ever 145 lb. Title fight.

But an injury to Aldo took him out of the fight, and Grispi was dominated by Poirier in a wholly unexpected fashion.

Roop is out to keep his spot on the UFC's roster following a loss to Mark Hominick at UFC Fight for the Troops 2 in January. Roop, who entered the UFC through The Ultimate Fighter's eighth season, dropped to featherweight after a 1-2 mark in the UFC and entered sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting.

A 1-1-1 mark in the WEC, coupled with the loss to Hominick, puts Roop on his last legs in this fight, and a loss will surely mean his exit from the organization with what would be a 1-4 mark inside the Octagon.

The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale takes place from the Pearl at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas on June 4, and will feature the finals of the upcoming season's welterweight tournament.

Penick's Analysis: This is a big fight for both guys. Grispi needs to prove that the hype was still somewhat warranted heading into his UFC debut, and he needs to get back on track after a dominating loss. Roop needs this to keep his spot. It should be a very exciting fight as well, and having it on Spike TV is a great move.

UFC boss meets with MMA fan Joe Lozito, who helped subdue alleged NY killer

A mixed-martial-arts fan who helped subdue a man accused of killing four people during a weekend stabbing and carjacking spree in New York City got a surprise from the UFC's president.

On Monday Dana White met with Joe Lozito, who tackled alleged killer Maksim Gelman with a leg sweep on Feb. 12 prior to his arrest.

In a myfoxny.com video, White offers the man his appreciation and invites him and his wife to UFC 128 as his special guest.

Ellenberger holds on to beat Rocha at UFC 126

Welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger (23-5) held off Carlos Eduardo Rocha (9-1) in a split decision at UFC 126 in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Ellenberger won with the bizarre score of 27-30, 29-28, 29-28.

For much of the first round, Rocha smothered Ellenberger, switching from side control to top control, trying for a leg lock and chokes, but Ellenberger survived and returned to his feet. He landed a few strikes before Rocha got him back on the ground, and in the last 30 seconds of the round, Rocha locked on a Kimura. He turned and cranked on Ellenberger's arm, switching it to an Americana, but the round ended before the submission could be secured.

Ellenberger recovered in the second round, with the action slowing down considerably. After both engaged in tentative stand-up for much of the round, Ellenberger scored a takedown with 20 seconds left. Rocha tried to secure a triangle choke but didn't have enough time.

By the third round, Rocha was diving for takedowns, which Ellenberger shook off easily. Ellenberger landed more power shots and then a takedown with 30 seconds left in the fight. He didn't do much with the takedown, but held off any submission attempts by the grappling wizard Rocha.

The 27-30 scorecard is puzzling, as it's surprising to see that a judge gave every round to the loser. Rocha fought well early on but seemed to lose steam, while Ellenberger did not.

Ellenberger was slated to fight Jon Fitch, but lost the chance to fight for the title shot when Fitch was given a fight with B.J. Penn.

UFC NEWS: Cowboys Stadium or Rogers Centre could get potential Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre superfight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_WK150_28.jpg
The UFC got one step closer to booking potentially their biggest fight ever on Saturday night when Anderson Silva knocked out Vitor Belfort with a vicious straight kick to the jaw, and now the attention will turn to April 30 and UFC 129.

If Georges St. Pierre can defeat Jake Shields in Toronto, the UFC will move forward with a Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva mega-fight, and they'll look to book it this year. Their only problem is figuring out where to hold the event.

"The most difficult part of putting this together is going to be where we hold it," White said after the event. "I don't know."

A leading candidate for the host site would be the Rogers Centre in Toronto, where UFC 129 will take place, but White also revealed another possibility: Dallas' Cowboys Stadium.

"It makes sense that we'll do a stadium show," White said. "It totally makes sense. If there was ever a fight that we were going to do at Dallas Cowboys stadium, this would be the fight."

Penick's Analysis: The UFC absolutely will run a stadium show if St. Pierre gets past Shields. Even though a Silva knockout win shouldn't have been surprising on Saturday night, the way in which he did it made things a whole lot more interesting. St. Pierre still represents a significantly difficult fight for Silva, precisely because he won't be standing in front of him as an open target. St. Pierre will be looking to bring the fight to the ground and force Silva to fight his fight for five rounds, much like Chael Sonnen was able to do. That's what makes this so intriguing, because GSP is so good, and though he'll be smaller it may not be a huge difference or detriment to him. Now, only Jake Shields stands in the way of this fight happening. Though many expect GSP to win, Shields is still one hell of a road block to his coming to fruition, and it's going to come down to April 30.

'The other Overeem' grounds and quickly submits Sefo

Little bro is getting all the attention, but don't sleep on Valentijn Overeem. The MMA veteran is dangerous and especially a guy like Ray Sefo, who has so liittle MMA experience. Overeem stood with the kickboxer Sefo for a while then got it to the ground easily and submitted Sefo in a matter of seconds via neck crank at 1:37 of the first at the Izod Center in New Jersey.

Overeem's younger brother, Alistair is one of the favorites in the main field of the tournament. He's also the Strikeforce heavyweight champ.

Sefo, 39, is a very good kickboxer, but trying to play catch up with his knowledge of the ground game. Sefo (2-1 MMA, 56-21-1 kickboxing) was more than holding his own on the feet. The more athletic and younger Overeem (29-25) was getting hit with some jabs and overhand rights.

With 3:10 gone by in the fight, Overeem, 34, dropped for a sloppy double-leg takedown.  Sefo sprawled, but Overeem was still able to crawl his way into a takedown. Sefo found himself underneath Overeem, who was in side control. The Dutch kickboxer got his right arm under Sefo's head and pulled up. The New Zealander quickly tapped. When he rose to his feet, he was grabbing his left shoulder.
