LOS ANGELES -- The UFC and the FOX Sports Media Group announced a new seven-year television deal on Thursday, which will see the promotion broadcast on network television for the first time in its 18-year history.

Below are highlights of the interviews we conducted at the press conference, which featured UFC president Dana White, CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and some of the top fighters in the sport.

Gurgel interview: Slugfests are in his blood

Jorge Gurgel's record may look a little pedestrian at 14-7, but he has nothing to be embarrassed about. Just about every fight with UFC, and now Strikeforce, has been a slobberknocker. It's kind of amazing considering Gurgel is best known around MMA as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

"There's a business conception that people always say I fight to entertain the fans, I fight stupid because I fight for the fans. No disrespect to all my fans, I love you guys very much, but that was never the case," Gurgel told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's DC and the Sunshine Man Show. "When the cage door shuts and the bell rings, I just see red."

Gurgel's original gameplan of using his striking to set up a takedown and twist up his opponent the ground goes out the window.

"The guy punches me, I want to punch him harder. The guy kicks me, I want to kick him harder," Gurgel said. "And at the end of the fight, it's usually me looking at my coaches saying 'did I win? Did I win?'"

Gurgel won't apologize for his fighting style. He simply loves to stand and bang.

"I've lost a lot of fights I shouldn't have, but I live with no regrets," Gurgel said. "I fell in love with Muay Thai the day I stepped into this country in 1998. In my first professional fight, I opened up with a head kick and broke his nose."

Gurgel went on to win his debut via triangle choke. Shortly after that, he made an appearance way back on Season 2 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and fought seven times officially for the UFC. With Joe Duarte on tap this Friday in Las Vegas on a Strikeforce card, Gurgel is currently 2-2 with the smaller Zuffa promotion.

Gurgel tops of solid card on Showtime (11 p.m. ET/PT) that also includes Danillo Villefort, Pat Healy, Gian Villante, Maciej Jewtuszko and female fight between Ronda Rousey and Sarah D'Alelio.

FOX exec bullish on UFC's growth potential: "This is just the beginning"

In recent years, many MMA fans and pundits alike have wondered aloud if the sport has somehow reached a plateau in terms of popularity.

UFC president Dana White has always laughed and that notion, insisting the sport's growth is just beginning. Now, he's got a powerful ally with the same belief: FOX Sports Media Group chairman David Hill.

"You look at where Frank and Lorenzo (Fertitta) and Dana have taken this sport, and it's literally that small of a group," Hill said. "That's the braintrust that have made it work for the past decade. Imagine what's going to happen in the next decade. I really think the growth potential of this is explosive."

Life devoted to martial arts: 98-year-old woman becomes a 10th degree black belt in Judo

Keiko Fukuda is still vibrant and alert at 98 years old, but simply surviving this long isn't on the top of her list of achievements.

The Sensei is an accomplished martial artist. In fact, she's one of only 16 people to ever earn a 10th-degree black belt in the combat sport of Judo. Last week, she became the first woman to be promoted to Judo's highest ranking. Through hard work and persistence, she's overcome a sexist ranking system in the world of martial arts.

Fukuda first discovered Judo in 1935 and by 1951 she was a fifth-degree black belt. She stayed there until the early '70s.

"The Kodokan was old fashioned and sexist about belts and ranks," Fukuda said (0:50 mark). "They just decided women didn't need any ranks over fifth degree. I was fifth degree for 30 years. This was the Kodokan's sexism."

Fukuda still teaches Judo three days a week. She's devoted her life to the discipline.

"All I did was Judo...this was my marriage," Fukudo reflected tearfully. "This is when my life destiny was set. I just never imagined how long this road would be."

Believe it or not, Fukuda worked under Kano Figura, the founder of Judo. Figura, born in 1860, took Fukuda under his wing as the martial art introduced a women's division.

Judo is one of the many bases behind mixed martial arts. Some of the top judokas in MMA include Karo Parisyan (first-degree black belt), Yoshihiro Akiyama (third-degree black belt) and Dong Hyun Kim (fourth-degree black belt)

Better UFC promo video? UFC 134 ?shocked crowd? or Brock ?screwed? with the wrong guy pre-UFC 121?

Not many casual fans know Yushin Okami, so the UFC has wisely put of all of its UFC 134 eggs in the Anderson Silva basket. The commercial currently running for UFC 134 is brilliant. Showing shots of an amazed and dazed crowd following Silva's front knockout of Vitor Belfort is a hit.

The only promo I've enjoyed as much or more was the video produced by a "mystery" source with Cain Velasquez and Co. poking fun at Brock Lesnar before their tilt at UFC 121 (NSFW). Understandably, this one never made it to television.

With complicated title mix clearing up, Rua focused only on positives at UFC 134

Look at the light-heavyweight division right now, and things are a lot clearer than they were a month ago.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is fighting champ Jon Jones. Rashad Evans is out of the proverbial "mix" and has taken the No. 1 contender spot. Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis wait for fights.

Forrest Griffin and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua are fighting again at UFC 134, and the winner could be next in line after Evans, according to UFC president Dana White.

UFC maintains production control in Fox deal, but Dana White looking to change everything with "fresh start"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_WK150_155.jpg
Goodbye gladiator intro, goodbye "Face the Pain," the UFC's presentation is about to go through some major changes as the world's leading MMA organization heads to network television for the first time.

During Thursday's UFC on Fox press conference, where the two sides announced a seven-year multi-platform television partnership, it was made clear that UFC President Dana White got the most important sticking point he had in bringing the product to a network: control of production.

But that control doesn't mean things are staying stagnant.

Fox executives at the press conference praised the UFC's current production and what they've done with the product over the last ten years. However, White isn't resting on his laurels with how their shows look, and with what he calls a "fresh start," he's ready to implement some changes.

"I look at this Fox deal as a fresh start for us, so I want to change everything,? White said. ?I want to change the look of the pay-per-view; [the] graphics, show open, the show opens in our Fight Nights, everything's going to have a different feel to it."

That different feel includes getting rid of the often maligned gladiator intro that has been a part of virtually every event in the Zuffa era. Also, while the UFC is maintaining control, that's not to say there won't be any influence from Fox.

"Me and my crew will run the production, and we're going to have a pre-show, a post-show, and they'll bring in their guys, the Fox guys, for the pre and post-show [coverage], White revealed. "[But] we'll be working with these guys, I love what they do in sports, and to enhance the look and feel of a UFC event [as well]."

Penick's Analysis: This is another very positive thing for the UFC in this deal. Having some Fox influences on how things are presented, along with the UFC knowing how to promote their fights and having done the leg work to get them this far is going to be a vast improvement over what we've seen thus far. The video packages that were presented during the press conference both for the announcement and the new Ultimate Fighter were superb, and hopefully it's a sign of things to come. But getting a new intro, getting rid of the gladiator and updating the graphics for the presentation are all going to be positive aesthetic moves.

Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza First Fight Announced for UFC on FOX Debut

Hours after the UFC announced its major deal with FOX, the promotion's matchmaking machine is in full swing.

The promotion confirmed Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza for the premiere edition of UFC on FOX. The event will be Nov. 12 at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The pair are two of the UFC's quickest-rising young featherweights.

The 22-year-old Poirier has captured his last four fights in improving to 10-1 overall. In his last outing, he defeated Jason Young via unanimous decision at UFC 131. Since moving over from the WEC, he's won both of his starts, also defeating Josh Grispi. The fight with Grispi also marked his featherweight debut.

Garza is 11-1 overall. His last bout was April's massive UFC 129 show. Garza authored one of the night's most memorable moments, when he caught Yves Jabouin in a flying triangle, a move that earned him a $129,000 Submission of the Night bonus.

Prior to that, he had knocked out Fredson Paixao at The Ultimate FIghter 12 Finale. Like Poirier, Garza was formerly a lightweight that shifted down a weight class.

The UFC did not specify if the fight would be on the network broadcast or undercard.

Former trainer to Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort, Shawn Tompkins passes away at 37

The UFC put on one of its most exciting fight cards of the year with UFC on Versus 5 tonight in Milwaukee, but the event was overshadowed by the sad news that renowned mixed martial arts trainer Shawn Tompkins passed away earlier on Sunday. Tompkins was just 37.

Multiple fighters confirmed the passing and the UFC made an announcement concerning Tompkins' death during the live show on Versus.

The reaction from fighters has slowly begun to trickle out:

MMA fighter John Gunderson today told MMAjunkie.com that Tompkins "didn't wake up," but he was still unclear on the details surrounding his passing.

A native of Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada, Tompkins spent many of his recent years in Las Vegas as the head coach at Xtreme Couture. He worked with former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture. In recent years, Tompkins also worked the corner of fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Forrest Griffin and Vitor Belfort.

In 2009, Tompkins left Xtreme Couture to move his team just a few miles away in Las Vegas to the TapouT Training Center. He was currently working with UFC fighters Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki and Sam Stout. Tompkins was married to Stout's sister Emilie.

Aaron Rosa drops to light heavyweight, meets Fabio Maldonado at UFC on Versus 6 in October

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_90.jpg
After losing his UFC debut in a heavyweight fight in June, Aaron Rosa will drop the light heavyweight division, and will take on Fabio Maldonado at UFC on Versus 6 on October 1.

The UFC announced the 205 lb. fight on Wednesday morning.

Rosa entered the UFC on a four fight win streak and a 16-3 record overall. However, after defeating Abe Wagner in a Titan Fighting Championships event in March, Rosa was taken out by Joey Beltran in his debut fight. The back and forth fight between the two was a very entertaining bout, though, and Rosa gets another fun matchup with Maldonado.

After defeating James McSweeney in his UFC debut, Maldonado took on Kyle Kingsbury in a closely contested fight at The Ultimate Fighter Finale in June. The Brazilian put forth a good effort, brutalizing Kingsbury's body with knees and punches throughout the three round fight, but ultimately he was edged out in the decision, losing for only the fourth time in his career.

UFC on Versus 6 takes place from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., headlined by a Bantamweight Championship fight between Dominick Cruz and Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson.

Penick's Analysis: This is an interesting matchup at 205 lbs. Rosa's not going to be a small light heavyweight, and Maldonado looked like he should move to the middleweight division down the line. There will be a significant size disparity in this fight, but that doesn't mean Maldonado doesn't have plenty to offer Rosa in the matchup. This should be a fun preliminary card scrap between these two, and it's a good fight for both to see where they'll go next.

UFC on Versus 5?s Three Stars: Henderson, Lytle and Cerrone

The fighters delivered on the UFC's first trip to the Dairy State, giving exciting performances from the top to the bottom of the card. That made the task of picking out just three stars even tough. Cagewriter's picks are below. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Ben Henderson: After losing the WEC belt to Anthony Pettis, the enduring image of "Smooth" was getting kicked in the face. He used that loss as fuel, first beating Mark Bocek at UFC 129, and then aggressively taking out Jim Miller on Sunday night. According to CompuStrike, Henderson outstruck Miller 148-26 and was 7-for-7 on takedown attempts.

No. 2 star -- Chris Lytle: Few athletes and even fewer fighters get to retire on a win. After 54 fights, 20 with the UFC, Lytle earned that honor with one last Fight of the Night performance, topped off with a Submission of the Night choke. Now, he'll have an extra $130,000 and a Harley-Davidson to help with his retirement.

No. 3 star -- Donald Cerrone: Before the UFC and WEC merger, "Cowboy" felt like the kid brother of the UFC's lightweight division, not quite getting the respect of his UFC brethren. After landing 24 power strikes to Charles Oliveira's four and TKOing the Brazilian in the first round, Cerrone joked that the little brothers had exacted their revenge.

Benavidez wins UFC on Versus 5 decision

MILWAUKEE -- Joe Benavidez didn't use any "Joe-Jitsu," but still took out Eddie Wineland in a decision at UFC on Versus 5 on Sunday evening. He took all three rounds, winning 30-27 on all three judges cards.

The two exchanged kicks for most of the first round, but Benavidez got the better of the striking combinations, bloodying Wineland's nose and opening a cut on his head with a right hook. Wineland came out with powerful punches early in the second, with Benavidez answering with leg kicks.

During one of Wineland's striking combinations, he appeared to poke Benavidez in the eye. Benavidez tried to stop the fight, but the referee didn't see the poke, and Wineland was able to take advantage and land several strikes.

But Benavidez recovered quickly while blood continued to leak from Wineland's nose. He was able to shake off Benavidez's takedown attempts, but not able to create more offense in the second round.

Benavidez brought on the fireworks in the second round, knocking Wineland into the fence before following up with a flying knee. They turned out to be more flash than substance, as Wineland survived both, but it sure was pretty.

After the bout, Benavidez was happy that he got to show off different aspects of his game.

"I definitely thought the leg kicks were working. I'm a well-rounded fighter and feel I am better on the ground. I go out there and fight as hard as I can every second. I have so much respect for every fighter out there, and don't know who I would like to fight next. Really, I want to fight everyone before it's all said and done."

The difference in this bout was that Wineland, known as a strong striker, was tentative on his feet. Benavidez appeared to implement a game plan exactly as he planned.

This is Wineland's second straight loss to a Team Alpha Male fighter, as he dropped a decision to Urijah Faber in March.

UFC ON VERSUS 5 RESULTS: Chris Lytle submits Dan Hardy in the third round, retires on a high note

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chris_Lytle_2.jpeg
Chris Lytle finished off his MMA career in perhaps the perfect manner on Sunday night at UFC on Versus 5, submitting Dan Hardy in the final minute of their main event fight in Milwaukee.

The fight played out as advertised, with both fighters standing and trading strikes throughout the entirety of the bout, but it was Lytle getting the best of the exchanges throughout the fight. In the first round, he pressed the action, continuously pressuring Hardy and connecting on combinations to the head and the body while absorbing the few blows thrown at him in the round.

He continued pressuring in the second, but Hardy had a little more success, staggering him with a couple of strikes in the round but still not doing enough to take it from Lytle.

As the third round played out a lot like the first two, Hardy went for an ill-advised takedown attempt with under a minute left, and Lytle locked on a guillotine choke. He rolled Hardy over and tightened the hold, and forced the tap at 4:16 of the final frame.

The win was the last in his career, as he revealed on Saturday night that he would retire after the fight to be around more for his children, and his son and daughter joined him in the cage as Bruce Buffer announced the decision. It was a feel good ending to the show, and Lytle couldn't have asked for a better send off.

As for Hardy, his fourth straight loss definitely had him at risk to being out of the UFC, but UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta put those fears to bed in quick fashion, taking to Twitter saying Hardy would not be cut after putting on an exciting main event fight.

Penick's Analysis: You can't help but just feel extremely happy for Lytle here, and it really couldn't have played out better for him tonight. He did exactly what he said he would do and gave Hardy the slug fest he wanted, and then he beat him at his own game. He brought his UFC career record to 10-10, and though he was only a .500 fighter in the UFC he always brought a top notch effort and was always willing to go out on his shield. I hope the best for him and his family as he turns his attention to a possible political career, and I'll honestly miss seeing him fight in the Octagon. That said, I'm very glad to see him go out on his own terms and in a fashion like this, rather than having been forced into retirement by repeated abuse and a lack of success.

Is The UFC Coming To Fox? I Hope So

Ever since it was announced that the UFC?s long-standing deal with Spike TV would soon be coming to an end, rumors and speculation have been running rampant on where the UFC will next call home.

Brock Lesnar Talks UFC Return: "I'm Back!"

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

In May we learned that diverticulitis, the same condition that sidelined the former UFC heavyweight champion just a few short years ago, had reared its ugly head yet again. The Death Clutch product once more underwent surgery, and had several inches of his large intestine removed.

While we?ve been awaiting word of Brock?s current condition, many pundits have been busy predicting early retirement for the dangerous heavyweight. It seems as though retirement is the last thing Lesnar himself is focused on.

An official announcement from the Death Clutch camp is expected to arrive sometime today. However, a new video from one of Lesnar?s official sponsors, Fusion Ammo, was released last night, and while the focus seems to be more heavy artillery related than anything, Lesnar does indeed address his current status as a mixed martial artist.

?What's new in the life of Brock Lesnar? Well, recently I went under the knife and had surgery for my diverticulitis. I feel like a new man, I feel great, healthy, strong - I feel like I used to feel.

?Right now [it's] one day at a time for me. My future, I believe there's still a bright future in the UFC for me. My health is a hundred percent. I feel great, my motivation is there and I want to get on the map again, I want to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion again and I believe I will do that.?

There?s no word yet on a planned return date, but that may arrive today along with Brock?s official announcement. For now, you can check out the video at YouTube.com.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's manager refutes rumors of a knee injury forcing Rua out of UFC 134

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Shogun_Rua_180_4.jpeg
The UFC's return to Brazil for the first time since 1998 comes next Saturday night with UFC 134, but on Wednesday there was a bit of a scare that the event may be losing its co-main event.

Rumors began around Brazilian forums and spread to Twitter and Facebook that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had re-injured his knee and would be out of his bout with Forrest Griffin on the card. However, Tatame.com has now reported quotes from Rua's manager squashing those rumors.

"His knee is absolutely perfect, there's no injury," said Rua's manager Eduardo Alonso. "I don't know where people take that from. He's training hard, following the training scheduled with Rafael Cordeiro, Renato Babalu [Sobral] and all the team... He's very excited [for] this fight."

With that assurance, fans can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to anticipating next week's card from Rio de Janeiro.

Penick's Analysis: I hope it's not a smoke screen comment from Alonso, but I don't think it is. If "Shogun" had injured his knee again, it may have marked the end of his career, and that's not something anyone would have wanted to see. I love this rematch between Rua and Griffin, and can't wait to see it, so hopefully he stays healthy throughout this next week and those rumors were indeed just rumors.

UFC on FOX to Premiere on November 12

The UFC's first foray into network television won't take long. During Thursday's announcement of a newly signed seven-year deal with FOX, UFC president Dana White also announced that the first event on the broadcast network will come on Nov. 12.

The event will likely take place in Anaheim, California, White said.
The card itself is still being worked on.

Under the terms of the deal, FOX will broadcast four events per calendar year, while FX while host six "Fight Night" events.

The FOX shows are expected to be higher caliber offerings than "Fight Night" events, according to UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta.

"You may not have championships on every card," he said. "There may be championships on some of the time. But I can tell you that we're going to deliver big fights on broadcast network, that's for sure. Fights that matter, that mean something, and there's a lot hanging on the line."

The Nov. 12 event will give UFC a stretch of four straight Saturdays with a major show. It kicks off October 29, when Nick Diaz tries to wrest the UFC welterweight title from Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137. The next weekend, the UFC flies to the UK, where Chris Leben and Mark Munoz will tangle in the main event of UFC 138. Then, it's back to the U.S. for the UFC on FOX debut, followed by a trip to nearby San Jose, California for UFC 139, with heavyweight king Cain Velasquez defending the belt against Junior dos Santos.
