UFC 132 postfight: Tito was in dream state when he took out Bader

Tito Ortiz is still in the UFC. The way he kept job made for one of the best MMA moments of 2011.

Ortiz pointed to finally getting healthy and new found confidence as the reasons he was able to pull off one of the biggest upsets in recent MMA history, at least according to the oddsmakers and bettors. By the time the fight started last night in Las Vegas, players had bet Ryan Bader all the way up to a minus-600 favorite.

A euphoric Ortiz said the fight was in slow motion.

"I had an out of body experience...Everything was in slo-mo. I was kind of watching myself do it. It was really weird," Ortiz said during the UFC 132 postfight press conference (3:35 mark). "For the first time everything was super, super slow. He was punching ... block, block. I was like 'that was it?'"

Ortiz gave credit to his trainer Jason Parillo.

Parillo's speed in training camp made Bader look slow to Ortiz. When he clinched the victory with a guillotine choke, Ortiz was still on cloud nine.

"He tapped and I didn't want to let go because I wasn't sure what was going on, because like I said, I had an out of body experience. I didn't know how to react," Ortiz said. "I wasn't letting go until the referee rips me off. I didn't mean to hold on longer than I was supposed to but I wasn't letting go."

Ortiz hadn't won a fight since 2006. He was 0-4-1 in his last five fights. The 36-year-old underwent two serious neck and back surgeries along the way.

"Physically I'm able to do it now. The surgeries I've gone through athletes don't come back. You're done," Ortiz said. "Not me. I have too much drive. Tonight it starts."

Ortiz really appeared sort of mentally beaten during prefight press conference. The losing and the questions about retirement were tough.

"It does eat at you [but] you have to have something to motivate you," Ortiz said. "When you have confidence behind you, you're unstoppable. You know, you look at Jonny 'Bones' Jones, he's unstoppable because his confidence is through the roof."

Ortiz said he'd like to face the winner of the Forrest Griffin-Mauricio "Shogun" Rua fight at UFC 134. It was good to see the old champion back to his form in the Octagon and outside following the fight. The crowd rallied behind Ortiz, who told the media that he had to beg UFC management for one more chance. He made the most of it.

Bobby Lashley vs. Eddie Sanchez to headline Titan Fighting Championships 19 on HDNet

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LashleyBobby_ML150_29.jpg
Former professional wrestler and Strikeforce veteran Bobby Lashley returns to action later this month, as he will meet UFC and Bellator vet Eddie Sanchez in the main event of Titan Fighting Championships 19 on July 28.

The event will air live on HDNet from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan., and officials announced the headliner on Saturday morning. Rob Kimmons and James Krause are also expected to compete on the card.

Lashley fights for the second time for Titan FC. His contract with Strikeforce expired after his first career loss - which came against Chad Griggs last August - and Lashley took a spot on Titan's roster earlier this year. He successfully returned to action in March, defeating John Ott by decision, but it was a boring and grinding decision win.

Sanchez looks to bounce back from a rough end of 2010. The six-fight UFC veteran went 3-3 in the organization from 2006-2008, and won four straight fights outside of the organization before dropping back to back fights to Neil Grove and Mike Whitehead.

Penick's Analysis: Sanchez may have lost two straight, but he's a definite challenge for Lashley, and a much higher level opponent in 2011 than some of the fighters Lashley has fought thus far in his seven fight career. That said, no one will be expecting much more out of Lashley than him attempting to use his wrestling to grind out another fight, as that's what he's shown in his last two fights after stopping a couple of guys in a row.

Ben Henderson interview: ?The idea is to keep winning?

Ben Henderson laughed at the idea of doing a "mean fighter face" for a picture I sent out of him on Twitter after our interview. Instead, he smiled and said, "I don't have one of those." That doesn't mean he's not planning to put on a great show when he fights Jim Miller at UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee, but he's more likely to use his calm demeanor than intimidation as a weapon.

Miller is on a seven-bout winning streak and is part of the discussion for the next lightweight title shot, but Miller's hype doesn't affect Henderson.

"I knew he was up there for the UFC title shot. He's a tough guy. We had considered him for a possible match-up, and on hearing it was Jim, I thought, cool. Start getting ready," Henderson told Cagewriter. "Whether they're ranked no. 99 or no. 2, it doesn't really matter. You've still got to get your hand raised."

In December, he didn't have his hand raised for the first time since going pro as a fighter, losing a bout to Anthony Pettis and finding himself on the wrong end of "The Showtime Kick." He blames the loss to Pettis on getting away from his game plan.

"My lesson learned was to stick with the game plan. I went a little bit away from the game plan because of the hype, and the winner facing Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard. I thought, 'Oh man, I want to show Frankie, I want to show Gray that I can stand up. That I can fight a national champion kickboxer standing up for all five rounds, and I can get my hand raised.' Not the best decision on my part."

He learned his lesson and rebounded at UFC 129, winning a decision over Mark Bocek. Now, he wants to win and impress his bosses on August 14. He plans to do that by being aggressive.

Grace under pressure

"At times, I'm lackadaisical, because I'm too relaxed. If I get in a submission, I know I'm OK. I know the ins and outs of submissions so well that I know what to do. I know that if I'm standing up, and if my opponent is coming forwards and I'm edging backwards, I know it doesn't look good to the judges, so I took that from the fight. Being the aggressor and giving the judges the visual. Not that it will win you a fight if you're getting your butt kicked, but it is good for the judges to see."

Staying calm in submission attempts has become a hallmark of Henderson's fighting. In his epic bout with Donald Cerrone, Henderson was caught in submission attempt after submission attempt, but never came close to tapping. He knows that this frustrates opponents, which gives him a chance to win.

"The more you can stay calm under pressure, it definitely frustrates your opponents, especially if they have you in their go-to move. Like if they know they have a guillotine, and they always tap people with it, and I'm just staying calm and telling the ref I'm fine, then you get out, and the guy is frustrated. It helps me for sure."

He attributes this skill to a naturally calm nature as well as a strong knowledge of submission moves.

"I stay calm under pressure. Everyone knows jiu-jitsu, but I'm pretty versed in it. I know the moves so well that I know if I turn my head just that much, I'm OK. I know that and I don't need to freak out."

Winning over Miller could catapult Henderson to the top of rankings and get his name mentioned for a title shot, but he doesn't plan on going on a Twitter campaign or beg to get a chance at the belt.

"Whether I get a title shot after I beat Jim or not, whatever. It's cool. If I have to fight a couple more, get my hand raised a few more times before I get a title shot, cool. If I get a title shot next, cool. Good. I'll take it. I'll let my fighting speak for itself and take whoever they put in front of me."

Because no matter who he fights or where he is ranked, Henderson knows that there is one goal in MMA, and that's winning.

"Just keep getting your hand raised. Whether I win 10 in a row without a belt, or with a belt. The idea is that you keep on winning. If you lose, you're either going to lose the belt, or you'll lose and be off track to get the belt. The idea is just keep winning."

Dan Henderson Not Interested In Return To The UFC

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

Former Pride Champ, current Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champ and long time fixture in the top ten rankings Dan Henderson will face one of the toughest tests of his career when he takes on Fedor Emelienanko in just a few short weeks in Chicago.<br><Br>

While that bout will not be for the title, the champ talked about the possibility of returning to his former stomping grounds in the UFC in the future, possibility to unify titles, during an interview this week and while it is something that may happen down the line, it isn't on Hendo's agenda right now:<Br><Br>

?It hasn?t crossed my mind, really,? Henderson told 5thRound of rejoining the world?s premier mixed martial arts promotion. ?I?m pretty happy where I am at. I think there?s plenty of guys that fight in Strikeforce right now [that I could face].<Br><Br>

?I think it would be pretty neat to be involved with, possibly down the road, unifying the title or something like that, but I?m pretty satisfied where I?m at.?<Br><Br>

Lombard calls Marquardt a cheater and claims a Bellator showdown won?t happen

Hector Lombard is badly in need of some top-notch competition. The Cuban middleweight dynamo, who's been dominant in Bellator, said he'd love to fight UFC castoff Nate Marquardt. The thickly-muscled Lombard doesn't even care if Marquardt is taking steps via testosterone replacement therapy to possibly gain an advantage.

"I think he is a cheater, but [against] me, he can take all the drugs he wants. I'm going to whoop his ass anyway," Lombard told Sherdog's Savage Dog Show.

The 29-2-1 Lombard has a grasp of reality, knowing he's way off the radar for many viewers of mixed martial arts.

"Nobody respects me at the moment. That's why I want to fight Nate Marquardt and show the people what I can do? He's a big name up there. I'm ready for the challenge. I want to show everybody what I'm capable of doing," said Lombard.

Lombard added that he heard Marquardt was offered a deal by Bellator and turned it down. Bellator's middleweight champ is riding an 18-fight win streak and hasn't lost since 2007.

Henderson questions Fedor's motivation in recent fights, Strikeforce says value on line

Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Dan Henderson's career has often mirrored that of Fedor Emelianenko throughout the past 10 years.

The two both competed under the Rings banner around the start of thew millennium, and each migrated to PRIDE during the glory years of the now-defunct Japanese organization.

Now the two will step in the cage to face each other under the Strikeforce banner, and the two seem to be headed in very different directions. For one, the "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson" main event could mean the end of the line.

Strikeforce books Gesias Cavalcante vs. Lyle Beerbohm for July 30 event in Illinois

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Octagon2_150_26.jpg
Strikeforce has added yet another fight to the July 30 "Fedor vs. Henderson" event, coming to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., as lightweights Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante and Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm will face off on the card.

Strikeforce officials announced the bout overnight, with the fight expected to be a part of the night's preliminary card.

"JZ" has just one victory over the last three years, with three losses and two no contests in that stretch as well. His two fights in Strikeforce have seen him drop a close decision to Josh Thomson and then accidentally poke Justin Wilcox in the eye, leading to a no contest in that most recent bout last month.

Beerbohm has had a rough 2011 so far. After beginning his career with 16 straight wins, "Fancy Pants" has dropped both of his fights this year. First was a decision loss to Pat Healy in February, and then he was defeated in just over a minute and a half by Shinya Aoki in April.

The July 30 event is headlined by the heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson, and the main card airs live on Showtime.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very important fight for both guys, and the loser is probably not going to be kept on Strikeforce's lightweight roster. They've each had rough stretches here, though Cavalcante's goes back considerably further and Beerbohm's problems have been recent. Still, each is equally in desperate need of getting back on track, and that will make for a good fight on the preliminary card in Chicago.

Dan Miller steps in for injured Alexandre Ferreira, meets Rousimar Palhares at UFC 134 in Brazil

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_42.jpg
Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira has suffered an injury, pulling him out of his scheduled fight with Rousimar Palhares at UFC 134 next month, and Dan Miller has been tapped to take his place.

The UFC announced the change on Wednesday evening.

Miller returns to the cage after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 128 in March in his home state of New Jersey. The loss snapped a two fight winning streak for Miller, though it's come out in the last couple of weeks that Marquardt was undergoing testosterone replacement therapy into the fight unbeknownst to Miller. It's the second time that has happened, as Chael Sonnen was also undergoing the treatment when he defeated Miller, without Miller being aware of the circumstances.

Palhares lost to Marquardt himself while the former title challenger was undergoing the treatment, again unbeknownst to him. However, he got back in the win column in March with a second round submission win over Dave Branch.

UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, headlined by the Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Penick's Analysis: Miller will step up to fight anyone at anytime, and he's proven that notion on a number of occasions, so it's no surprise to see him take this fight. This makes for a really good matchup still, and with Miller being a very hard fighter to finish, he's going to make for a very tough test for Palhares. This is a good late replacement fight, and Miller still has almost a full two months to prepare.

Edgar Cleared For A Return ? Maynard Still In Recovery

<B>By CHRISTOS POLYDOROU<BR>
MMANEWS.COM GUEST CONTRIBUTOR</B><BR><BR>

UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has officially been given the go ahead to resume training, as he has now been medically cleared to fight. The champ had recently suffered a back injury in preparation for his third scrap against Gray Maynard scheduled for UFC 130 and was forced to withdraw from the fight. The champ stated that his back problems have been an ongoing problem and was not merely an injury that he had suffered during training.<BR><BR>

Maynard, who also withdrew from the fight, as he too had sustained an injury during training, subsequently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee and has not yet been medically cleared to return to training. "Right now, we're still waiting for him to be cleared by the doctor?Hopefully, it happens this week. Once we get him back into the gym and we know everything is good, then we will move forward and start looking for the date," said Maynard's boxing coach Gil Martinez.<BR><BR>

The two fighters fought their hearts out to a split decision draw this past January at UFC 125, in a back and forth dramatic fight that saw both men coming close to a finish. Though Edgar managed to walk away from the fight with his belt, he was not able to definitively avenge the one and only blemish on his record that had come from the hands of none other than the ?Bully? Maynard back in April 2, 2008. Following the fight, Dana White announced that there would be an immediate third match-up between the two to settle the score, but was later pushed to May 28, 2011.<BR><BR>

The injuries that both Edgar and Maynard suffered, have added an extra sprinkle of anticipation for their rubber match as the tension in the UFC?s Lightweight division is building up to unprecedented heights. The division is so deep at present stage with so many prospective contenders that have also paid their dues and are ready for their shot at the title. Clay Guida has recently disposed of former WEC Lightweight champ Anthony Pettis scoring his fourth consecutive win, Melvin Guillard put away yet another opponent at UFC 132 with yet another vicious stoppage, Dennis Siver is tearing through competition, Ben Henderson is slowly but steadily climbing back to the top while Jim Miller boasts a hard-earned seven fight winning streak. And lest we forget, there is always the possibility for a cross-organization fight between Strikeforce Lightweight sensation and champ Gilbert Melendez and the UFC titleholder, whoever that ends up being.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

As Frankie Edgar is already back to the gym and could be prepared to fight as early as October, the UFC may perhaps choose to abandon the Edgar/ Maynard rematch and go ahead with other possible opponents. One thing is for sure; Edgar better hit the gym hard and stay alert on his toes because there are challengers gunning for his strap left, right and centre.<BR><BR>

ProElite Returns In August, Andrei Arlovski Set To Headline The Event In Hawaii

I admit it, fans and friends? I was a fan of Elite XC. Don?t judge me, it was a different time. For all their many, many flaws, Elite XC put together some very interesting cards and some very big fights, and they put live events on national television. Of course, the promotion would burn up [...]

Upstart Singapore Promotion One FC Aiming to Conquer Asia

Since the demise of Pride FC in 2007, Asian MMA has struggled to regain even a fraction of its former significance.

Japan tried and failed to rebuild with DREAM and Sengoku. South Korea has seen Spirit MC fall and Fighting Mixed Combative was a complete disaster. Macau-based promotion Fury went down after only one event due to embezzlement and China's Art of War has faded into obscurity. Hong Kong's Legend FC and South Korea's Road FC have had some success but growth there has been slow.

Asian MMA may again have some hope however as up-start Singapore promotion One Fighting Championship, armed with dollars from Middle Eastern investors, a rumored major sponsor and an impending 24-country broadcast deal with ESPN STAR Sports, plans to build the biggest MMA event in Asia - starting September 3rd.

Headed by former ESPN STAR Sports employee and former Martial Combat promoter Victor Cui, the promotion has already inked a domestic TV deal in Singapore and given Cui's background, is reportedly on the verge of signing a ESPN STAR Sports contract that will see MMA broadcast to 310 million viewers in 24 Asian countries. Sources have indicated to MMA Fighting that a major sponsorship deal is also being negotiated to supplement capital provided by Middle Eastern investors.

The first One FC event, set to take place at the 12,000-capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 3rd, is set to feature Leandro Issa, Eduard Folayang, Ole Laursen, BJJ Mundials champ Zorobabel Moreira Jr and Brian Choi with the majority of the card likely to come from Singapore-based Evolve gym and Team Lakay Wushu in the Philippines - although major international fighters are also being targeted.

Negotiations are reportedly ongoing with some major Japanese and international fighters but DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki and UFC and Bellator veteran Roger Huerta were among those approached, however they have been ruled out due to contractual obligations and acting commitments respectively.

Although it does clearly intend to poach some major international talent, sources close to the promotion claim that One FC are not hoping to compete on the established Japanese market (Japan is not among the 24 countries that receive ESPN STAR Sports) or with the UFC, but will instead focus on building an infrastructure to produce fighters, supporting regional MMA in Asia and showcasing both local talent and fighters with Asian heritage.

Asian fighters outside of Japan and Korea have few options for fighting and training and One FC is reportedly aiming to support those talents who would otherwise be forced to turn to other combative sports.

Given concept, the history of boxing and kickboxing in the region, the money that is rumored to be behind the promotion, the forthcoming broadcast deal and the booming MMA markets in Singapore and the Philippines - One FC seems to be primed for success.

The concept of expanding and building an MMA industry in the combat-loving countries of Thailand and Indonesia along with Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan however is much more risky as those markets are uneducated and untested with MMA. Real growth and investment in those areas would be a seriously long-term investment and history shows that Asian promotions have been struggling to stay around that long.

One FC does have some distinct advantages though - the downfall of almost every other competitor in the continent means that already established fans are starved for MMA and that becoming the biggest in Asia should not prove as difficult as it one was.

Chael "The Dragon-Slayer" Sonnen: The Sonnen-Machida Saga Begins

<B>By CHRISTOS POLYDOROU<BR>
MMANEWS.COM GUEST CONTRIBUTOR</B><BR><BR>

Undisputed Middleweight trash-talking champ Chael Sonnen, renowned for his no-holds-barred verbal arsenal, has recently thrown down the gauntlet challenging yet another UFC fighter of Brazilian inheritance. The once UFC Middleweight contender has chosen to redirect his attention from Wanderlei Silva to the former UFC Light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.<BR><BR>

After the dust had settled following the Silva/Leben fight at UFC 132, Sonnen gave an interview to MMAFighting and unleashed yet again his relentless fury, both comical and serious in intent as is the middleweight?s style:<BR><BR>

"The only guy that would have finished him quicker is me," said Sonnen in a comment directed to Wanderlei Silva who had just fallen at the hard uppercuts of Chris Leben.<BR><BR>

In reply to whether he still considered a possible future match-up against Wanderlei, Sonnen replied: "No, it doesn't make sense, no. Wanderlei's gonna need to do something else. I don't have any interest in getting in there with him. I don't want to be the next guy to force him to have a flashlight shined in his eyes."<BR><BR>

Sonnen, who has not seen any in-ring action since his title fight loss to Middleweight champion Anderson Silva on August 7, 2010, has recently had his suspension lifted by the California State Athletic Commission and is eligible to reapply for his fight licence. For all the fight fans that have not been following Sonnen?s recent court drama, the story follows as thus: Soon after the Silva/Sonnen title fight, it was reported that Sonnen had tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. He was consequently penalized with a year-long suspension by the California State Athletic Commission, which was later reduced to 6 months. Sonnen, who parallel to his fighting career was also actively involved in politics running for State Representative in Oregon's House District 37, dropped out of the race after being charged of money laundering. The fighter pleaded guilty to the money laundering charges on January 3, 2011, and was sentenced to 2 years of probation and taxed with a $10,000 fine.<BR><BR>

Love him or (as the booing may hint at) hate him, Sonnen has managed to stay in the spotlight even after the fighter had failed to pound away his way to the top of the Middleweight food chain. Using his Tweeter account as the weapon of choice, Sonnen has attacked, challenged and satirized a multitude of fighters, particularly Brazilians. In the aforementioned interview during UFC 132, Chael made public his desire to take a shot at 205 pounder Lyoto Machida: "I don't know what the future holds, there are plenty of guys out there to fight. There's a karate guy at 205 pounds, I might stop there on my way back to 185 for a tuneup fight and take out Machida."<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

Whether Sonnen is really interested in taking on such a challenge still remains to be seen even though rumours have already began to spread about a possible confrontation between the two fighters perhaps at UFC 136.<BR><BR>

Who is next for Tito Ortiz? How about Ochocinco

After Tito Ortiz's win at UFC 132, there has been plenty of speculation on his next opponent. Earlier this week, Cagewriter mentioned the possibilities of Chuck Liddell, Fedor Emelianenko, Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson, but another athlete has thrown his name into the ring.

Locked out Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco wants to give Ortiz a fight.

Ortiz isn't the first guy Ochocinco has gone after. He's called out UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva in the past, and has asked UFC president Dana White for a spot in the Octagon. Silva, who is closer to Ochocinco's size, has long been Ocho's target, but now he has moved on to the bigger Ortiz.

NFL collective bargaining agreement negotiations appear to be headed in the right direction, so hopefully, Ochocinco will have to worry about football soon. In the meantime, who else would you like to see the wide receiver fight? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 136's Brian Stann expects pre-fight respect from Chael Sonnen

Three weeks ago, an email showed up in Brian Stann's inbox - from Chael Sonnen. Sonnen had two buddies who were military veterans and struggling to find a job. Stann immediately offered help.

Sonnen provided color commentary for Stann's first professional fight, which came in early 2006, and they briefly trained under the same roof at Team Quest. The two sat close to each other at this past weekend's UFC 132 event, and Stann said Sonnen was "very respectful."

If all this is sounding like a terrible foundation for a co-main event fight between Sonnen and Stann at UFC 136, it probably is.

It wasn't pretty, but it sure was fun.

The wild-swinging rematch capped off a night full of fireworks on the Showtime-broadcast main card.
