With ear bleeding, Griggs scores TKO of Villante at Strikeforce

Chad Griggs won a quick slugfest over Gian Villante at Strikeforce in New Jersey on Saturday, winning his reserve bout in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. Griggs is now 2-0 in Strikeforce after TKOing Bobby Lashley in August.

Griggs came out swinging from the bell, wobbling Villante more than once. But Villante, who played football at nearby Hofstra University, held on and even landed a vicious kick to Griggs' ear. The ear exploded with blood, but it didn't bother Griggs. He knocked Villante to the ground with a right hook. Villante somehow stood back up but took more punishment. Griggs landed another right, and followed Villante to the ground with more strikes until referee Yves Levigne stopped the bout at 2:49.

With this win, Griggs is now part of a pool to step in for any Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix fighters who may get injured. He is 10-1, while Villante falls to 7-2.

UFC NEWS: Rashad Evans steps in against Rampage Jackson at UFC 130

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JacksonRampage_150_65.jpg
Thiago Silva has been forced out of his UFC 130 bout with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. But the UFC has pulled out a huge replacement, as MMAWeekly.com reports that Rashad Evans will step in for Thiago to meet Rampage in a rematch of their UFC 114 bout.

Evans was initially scheduled to meet Mauricio "Shogun" Rua for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title at UFC 128 in March, but a knee injury has sidelined him for six weeks. He'll now return two months later at the memorial day weekend card in Las Vegas.

Evans and Jackson have a history with one another dating back to an in cage confrontation at UFC 96 in 2009. The two then coached against each other on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter. Though they were supposed to meet at UFC 107 after the season had finished, Rampage's part in the A Team movie took him out, and the two finally met last Memorial Day Weekend at UFC 114.

Jackson was defeated in a three round decision that night, but he returned in November of last year to secure a victory over Lyoto Machida.

UFC 130 is expected to be headlined by a Lightweight Championship rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a huge replacement fight with Silva being forced out. The hype for their first fight last year made it the first non-title fight to draw a million ppv buys, and even though the interest will be less than that for the rematch, it will still draw well. And after beating Machida with a smart gameplan, Rampage can definitely win this rematch. The UFC will be in a bit of trouble if Jon Jones defeats Shogun in March and if Evans wins, though, as they'll have taken out a contender and Evans won't fight Jones. But, this should hopefully be a better fight than their first encounter, and it's a big fight for this card.

BELLATOR NEWS: Bellator announces four Oklahoma dates for season four on MTV2

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Bellator Fighting Championships is setting up some venues for their upcoming fourth season, as the organization announced on Thursday that they will be returning to Oklahoma for four events this spring.

Bellator has not run an event in Oklahoma since their first season, but will hit two venues twice during the 12 week fourth season, coming live to MTV2 beginning this March.

The Lucky Star Casino in Concho, Okla. will receive Bellator 37 and Bellator 42 on March 19 and April 23, respectively, and the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Okla., will get Bellator 40 and Bellator 43 on April 9 and May 7, respectively.

"It's great to visit locations where fans love MMA and Oklahoma is one of those places," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said in an official release. "We are happy to be working with Howard Pollack and his team at C3 Fights to bring our MTV2 MMA tournament events to Oklahoma fans four times in 2011."

Chael Sonnen Talks Anderson Silva, Says He Will Beat Him Next Time

Chael Sonnen was back at it following UFC 126, calling out Anderson Silva in comical fashion, letting the Champ know that he apparently gave Sonnen all he needed to beat him if given another chance:<br><Br>

"Thank you, Anderson, for revealing yet another weakness for me to exploit in our rematch. Beating that poor punching bag doesn't impress Uncle Chael, guy. You tipped your hand like a chump poker player at a $5 table in Atlantic City. You may have beaten Vitor, but in the process, you LOST your edge. By beating that husk, you gave me the last page of your playbook. Revel in your time, [because] it ENDS the night you face me. I will mow you down like autumn wheat, AGAIN."<Br><Br>

So, what do you think? Should Sonnen get another shot down the road? How would he fair?<br><Br>

UFC 126 shocker: Jones given immediate title shot after submitting Bader

Now that's a night. Jon Jones showed off another part of his sick arsenal in taking out unbeaten Ryan Bader at UFC 126. The lanky 23-year-old light heavyweight phenom overpowered Bader for 6-of-9 minutes on the ground and finished the fight with a guillotine choke. Then the UFC shocked Jones and fans by offering the kid a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Jones accepted on the spot.

"I feel great. God is so good. I feel great," Jones told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Hats off to Endicott, New York. And I'm going for a world title baby. Let's do it!"

Rogan announced that Rashad Evans, Rua's original opponent at UFC 128 was out with an injured knee. Dana White confirmed to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that the fight is still on for mid-March in Newark, N.J.

Jones (12-1, 6-1 UFC) will have just over five weeks to prep for the biggest fight of his young career. Iole reports that Evans injured his knee yesterday. According to Dr. Steve Sanders, the knee will keep Evans sidelined for 6-8 weeks.

Bader (12-1, 5-1 UFC) is a huge, thickly-muscled light heavyweight, but tonight he looked no different than every other Jones' opponent in the UFC. The kid is thin, but he's overpowered everyone when they've locked horns with him.

After toying with some standup at the start of the fight, Jones scored an easy takedown just 30 seconds in. He muscled Bader on the ground, which shocked many observers considering he was facing a former All-American wrestler from Arizona State. Jones worked for different chokes while he kept the fight on the ground for two minutes. Once it got back up to the feet, Bader looked intimidated by Jones' length. He attempted a takedown from a mile away and wound up on his back again for the final two minutes of the first.

In the second, it was more of the same. Jones was more measured. Bader looked tentative on the feet. Then Bader made the mistake again of shooting from long distance and allowed Jones to settle on top of him, where he eventually sunk in the nasty guillotine. His 84-inch reached help set it up and it was clear, his grip was like a vice. Bader tapped at 4:20 of the second.

Update: Jones received a $75,000 bonus for Submission of the Night.

BELLATOR NEWS: Patricio "Pitbull" Freire joins season four featherweight tournament

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_219.jpg
The seventh participant in Bellator's season four featherweight tournament has been confirmed, as season two runner-up Patricio "Pitbull" Freire will join the field.

Freire was defeated by current Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren in the season two finals, and has been out of action since that loss last June.

"Patricio Pitbull is a great fighter. He was seconds away from beating one of the top two Featherweights on earth and that loss was his only defeat as a professional. I know that his sole focus is winning this tournament and earning the opportunity to avenge his loss to our Champion Joe Warren. He's going to be fun to watch fight this season," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

"I have no interest besides fighting as a professional," said Freire. "It's the only thing I really want to do. Every day in my life I am looking to overcome myself and evolve into a better fighter. I never believe that I am good enough. It's all about improvement, every single day."

"The time to show what I am all about is coming," said Freire. "To win this tournament would mean a dream coming true. I can honestly say that I am more confident for this season than I was last year. Last year I got close, this year it's mine!"

UFC NEWS: Josh Koscheck out for at least six months, thinks Jake Shields is an "easy fight" for GSP

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JoshKoscheck_150_41.jpg
Josh Koscheck's got a bit of downtime after his loss to Georges St. Pierre in December.

The welterweight revealed in an interview with MMAJunkie.com that he will be out of action for at least six months following successful surgery to repair a broken orbital bone suffered in the fight. According to Koscheck, the entire right side of his face is still numb from the surgery, and his doctors have limited his physical activity to walking during recovery.

"Georges beat me fair and square that night," Koscheck said. "He's a better fighter, but I think that the first punch of the fight was when I broke my eye. So I thought that it was definitely bad luck on my behalf. That's life. He threw the punch, and it was a good punch. I definitely think the fight would have been a lot different if that wasn't the case."

Despite the demoralizing defeat, Koscheck still plans on getting back to the top, though he knows he's got a long road ahead of him.

"I'll continue to grind and build my way up to being the No. 1 contender and put myself back in the position," he said. "Right now, that's so far away for me. I still have five months of recovery."

Koscheck also commented on St. Pierre's next opponent, Jake Shields. Those two will meet in on April 30 in the main event of the UFC's first ever event in Toronto, and while he doesn't believe Shields will be much for the Champ, he was complimentary of the challenger's skills.

"I think it's an easy fight for Georges if he plays a smart game plan," he said. "But Jake Shields is definitely a good fighter. He's got some weapons. He's got a good guillotine, and he's vicious on top."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Koscheck turned around the tone of his comments once the fight was over. He was humbled by the one-sided loss, and though much of his pre-fight trash talk was for show, his change in attitude and respect for the champion is still good to see. He's now got to sit around and recover from this surgery, but he'll be a challenge for any 170 lb. fighter he gets put in against when he's ready to come back.

Dana White on Silva vs Belfort, Rashad's Inactivity & Brett Favre's Texts - UFC 126

MMA H.E.A.T.'s Karyn Bryant spends a few quality moments with UFC President Dana White after the UFC 126 press conference. Dana talks about the strength of the card, and tells us why there will be more like it in 2011. The stare-down between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and challenger Vitor Belfort was epic, and Dana let's us know why this fight resonates so much with the two fighters, as well as what it means in Brazil. Karyn asks Dana about Rashad Evans and whether or not it was a good idea for him to not fight while the light heavyweight champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua rehabs his knee. Finally, the two have a few laughs over Ben Roethlisberger and Brett Favre.

Diaz just wants big fights, not interested in 'maturing'

Nick Diaz put a licking on brawler Evangelista Santos, but the prefight wasn't engulfed by the champ's trademark trash talk. Diaz is genuine. Just because he rips most  opponents doesn't mean that it's some sort of ploy to fire himself up or sell the fight. So when he was asked if not ripping "Cyborg" was a byproduct of maturing, Diaz answered with his typical brutal honesty.

"No, not at all," Diaz said (1:22 mark). "[In the past] I had to [expletive] with people. We had something between us."

Diaz said he respected Cyborg as well as past opponents like Robbie Lawler. That wasn't the case with guys like KJ Noons, Scott Smith and Frank Shamrock.

"That was that and now it's over with. Sometimes you get into some conflict and that's happened to me more than once, so now everyone feels as if I 've gone and matured or grown up or somethin, but that's just the way fighting is," Diaz said. "If you're going to make it personal, then it's really going to be a personal thing. It's already personal. The guy who wins is going to go on and make a lot more money."

Make no mistake about it, the "old" Diaz will return if Showtime/Strikeforce decides to make a fight against Paul Daley. Daley likes to fan the flames and already has his own bad guy tag after his exile from the UFC for sucker punching Josh Koscheck following their fight at UFC 113.

Diaz sounds confident that he'll be fine against the British slugger.

"I see myself putting punches on him," Diaz said. "Maybe him trying to take me down too and getting caught in a choke. He could run from me and I could run him down. I'll run him down and take him down and beat him on the ground. I could see that fight going a lot of different ways."

Diaz knows Daley's reputation as a one-dimensional fighter.

"I'm not really impressed with Paul Daley as a mixed martial artist," Diaz said. "He's got great standup and he's got good knockout power. I'm sure he knows what's going to happen if he steps in there and fights me."

He re-stated that he'll fight Jason Miller, but he needs to get paid a little extra if he's going to meet the 185 pounder at middleweight.

"This is hard stuff. I train hard everyday. I work more than eight hours days every day," Diaz said. "And they're harder than your eight-hour days holding a camera. It's different. You can't do this, what I do. I think that money talks."

There you have it. Diaz drops a little trash on all us media tough guys. He's earned the right to say whatever he wants. He keeps backing it up in the cage and putting on entertaining fights. Strikeforce hit a home run when it re-signed Diaz.

UFC NEWS: Cowboys Stadium or Rogers Centre could get potential Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre superfight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_WK150_28.jpg
The UFC got one step closer to booking potentially their biggest fight ever on Saturday night when Anderson Silva knocked out Vitor Belfort with a vicious straight kick to the jaw, and now the attention will turn to April 30 and UFC 129.

If Georges St. Pierre can defeat Jake Shields in Toronto, the UFC will move forward with a Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva mega-fight, and they'll look to book it this year. Their only problem is figuring out where to hold the event.

"The most difficult part of putting this together is going to be where we hold it," White said after the event. "I don't know."

A leading candidate for the host site would be the Rogers Centre in Toronto, where UFC 129 will take place, but White also revealed another possibility: Dallas' Cowboys Stadium.

"It makes sense that we'll do a stadium show," White said. "It totally makes sense. If there was ever a fight that we were going to do at Dallas Cowboys stadium, this would be the fight."

Penick's Analysis: The UFC absolutely will run a stadium show if St. Pierre gets past Shields. Even though a Silva knockout win shouldn't have been surprising on Saturday night, the way in which he did it made things a whole lot more interesting. St. Pierre still represents a significantly difficult fight for Silva, precisely because he won't be standing in front of him as an open target. St. Pierre will be looking to bring the fight to the ground and force Silva to fight his fight for five rounds, much like Chael Sonnen was able to do. That's what makes this so intriguing, because GSP is so good, and though he'll be smaller it may not be a huge difference or detriment to him. Now, only Jake Shields stands in the way of this fight happening. Though many expect GSP to win, Shields is still one hell of a road block to his coming to fruition, and it's going to come down to April 30.

Herschel Walker vs. Scott Carson Fight Video

by Michael David Smith

Herschel Walker improved to 2-0 as an MMA fighter with a first-round technical knockout victory over Scott Carson on Saturday night at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg. The fight video is above.

Walker, the former NFL star who was a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at Georgia and also dabbled in Olympic bobsledding, made short work of Carson, who could do little more than cover up and try not to get too badly hurt.

Walker indicated after the fight that he hopes to fight for Strikeforce again. At age 48, he's not ready to quit fighting.

UFC 126 Results: Miguel Torres Beats Antonio Banuelos

by Michael David SmithFormer WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres looked great in his UFC debut, beating Antonio Banuelos by unanimous decision at UFC 126.

All three judges scored it 30-27 for Torres, who may just be fighting for the UFC bantamweight belt by the end of the year. He looks like he's back.

"I did what my coach told me to do," Torres said. "I followed the game plan. ... I know I broke his nose. I heard it crunch a couple times."

Herschel Walker Wins Strikeforce MMA Bout by First-Round TKO

by Michael David SmithFormer football star Herschel Walker improved to 2-0 as a professional mixed martial arts fighter, beating Scott Carson on Saturday night's Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg fight card.

Walker won a one-sided beatdown against an opponent who didn't have much to offer. The question now is whether Walker is interested enough in MMA to stick with it and take a chance against an opponent who might actually hit back, which Carson didn't do.

"I was OK," Walker said when asked to assess his own performance. "I've got to be on offense. Being a young MMA fighter I've got to control what I'm doing in the cage."

STRIKEFORCE "DIAZ VS. CYBORG" RESULTS: Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza retains title with third round submission over Robbie Lawler

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Strikeforce_San_Jose_poster_2.jpg
Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza successfully defended his title for the first time on Saturday night in San Jose, submitting Robbie Lawler in the third round. But it wasn't without it's drama.

An eventful first round saw Souza take Lawler down early, and control the position in side control for two minutes of action. Lawler, however, finally scrambled out and got to his feet, and then proceeded to nearly finish the Champion.

Landing a series of punches, knees and kicks against the cage, Lawler hurt Souza, who stumbled across the cage and fell to his back. But Lawler then made his biggest mistake in the fight, opting to follow Souza to the ground instead of making him stand. He edged the round on the scorecards, but fell behind the rest of the way.

The second round was spent almost entirely on the ground, with Souza again dominating the position battle and going for numerous submission attempts. Lawler nicely got out of them all, but lost a clear round.

Even heading into the middle frame, Lawler came out tired, and Souza again took him to the ground. This time, he took Lawler's back and got the rear naked choke locked in, forcing Lawler to tap out.

Souza now looks to get back into the cage as soon as possible, saying after the fight he's ready for anyone that Strikeforce puts in front of him.

UFC NEWS: Zuffa, LLC files suit against Justin.tv for copyright and trademark infringement

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_752.jpg
The UFC's parent company, Zuffa, LLC., continues on in their attempt to crack down on online piracy of their live pay-per-view events, as they announced on Friday that they have filed suit against Justin.tv, Inc for copyright and trademark infringement.

The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada, and insists that "Justin.tv?s repeated and ongoing failure to meaningfully address the rampant and illegal uploading of video of live Pay-Per-View UFC events by members and users of the Justin.tv website" are at the root of the lawsuit.

"Zuffa has attempted to work on numerous occasions with Justin.tv over nearly a two-year period to encourage it to prevent or limit its infringing activities,? Zuffa?s Las Vegas attorney, Donald J. Campbell said. ?Regrettably, Justin.tv has not only turned a blind eye to the massive online piracy occurring on its website, we believe it has actually induced its users to commit copyright infringement thus leaving Zuffa no alternative but to take this fight to the courts."

Zuffa alleges that over 50,000 people illegally viewed their UFC 121 event in October. According to the release, third-party contractors removed over 200 streams of the event from the Justin.tv website.

This lawsuit follows up on Zuffa's subpoena of the company in the summer of 2010. In that case, the UFC sought the names of those users on Justin.tv that were uploading the events, but now they've turned their attention to the site itself.

Penick's Analysis: Even with this latest measure, it's going to be extremely difficult for the UFC to stop the piracy of their events online. They remain diligent in their efforts, and it's important that they do what they can to halt how widespread it has become for pay-per-view events, but with the internet people are always going to find a way around whatever restrictions get put in place. But this is a big lawsuit, and will strike a major blow for all content providers who have had their material pirated on sites such as Justin.tv.

UFC NEWS: Spike TV to air 12 UFC Prelims Live broadcasts in 2011, begins with UFC 126

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_756.jpg
The UFC Prelims Live specials return to Spike TV in 2011 beginning with next month's UFC 126 event, and Spike TV officials on Monday officially announced the return for 2011.

While Spike and the UFC teamed in 2010 to bring ten such specials to the network, 2011 will see an additional two events get the Prelims Live treatment, as 12 total specials will air ahead of UFC pay-per-view events.

The hour long broadcasts have run on Spike since September of 2009, and the hour long broadcasts have garnered between 1.1 and 1.7 million viewers on Spike.

The UFC 126 Prelims Live broadcast takes place on February 5, and will feature Donald Cerrone vs. Paul Kelly and Chad Mendes vs. Michihiro Omigawa. That night's pay-per-view broadcast is headlined by a Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort, live in Las Vegas.

Penick's Analysis: This means that all but three or four pay-per-view cards in 2011 will feature a guaranteed seven fights on TV and pay-per-view. With the UFC experimenting with the Facebook stream this past Saturday, they could be bringing even more fights online throughout the year as well. It's going to be a great thing for fans and fighters, as more fighters will be able to get sponsorships for their fights being on TV, and fans will get more free fights to go along with the pay-per-view events. This will be great throughout the year.

UFC NEWS: 42,000 tickets to be made available for UFC 129 in Toronto, tickets range from $50-$800

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_762.jpg
When the UFC makes their debut in Toronto this April with UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre, the event will destroy the current record for attendance for a UFC event in North America. Currently held by last month's UFC 124 event at just over 23,000, the April 30 event, headlined by the Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, will feature a much, much larger capacity.

UFC officials today revealed the seating plans for the event, as well as ticket prices, which go on sale on February 12 to the public.

The event will be configured for 42,000 spectators, and tickets for the card will range from $300-$800 for floor seats, with prices ranging from $50-$225 in the stands.

"We are really excited to bring a UFC event to Rogers Centre and want to create the ultimate experience for fans," the UFC's director of Canadian operations, Tom Wright, stated in today's release. "We are working on specialized fan zones and other unique features that will make this a can't-miss event. With this card and the level of energy we expect inside Rogers Centre on April 30, UFC 129 is going to be off the charts."

In addition to the main event, the card will also feature a second title fight, as Jose Aldo defends the UFC Featherweight Championship against Mark Hominick. Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida, Phil Davis vs. Matt Hamill and Ben Henderson vs. Mark Bocek are all scheduled for the night's main card as well.

Penick's Analysis: This is an incredible fight card, and this is going to be an incredible experience for the fans that get to take it in. The card may not quite sell out with how much tickets are costing, but it will certainly do well north of the current record, and for those that can afford the trip, it should be well worth whatever they're paying to see this in person. This is going to be huge for the UFC in many ways, and I'm excited to see the card and the audience that night in Toronto.
