UFC cuts Miguel Torres over rape joke on Twitter

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Miguel_Torres_180.jpeg
Last month, Forrest Griffin came under fire for a highly insensitive joke about rape over Twitter, which led to him making a public apology and donating money to a foundation after it blew up in his face. On Wednesday, bantamweight Miguel Torres tweeted a rape joke of his own, and then Rashad Evans made a very ill-advised statement to Phil Davis regarding the current scandal at Davis' alma mater Penn State.

White had a conversation with Evans about his statement, was satisfied with Evans' explanation, apology, and vow not to let it happen again, but the hammer has come down on Torres. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, White revealed that the UFC has cut the former WEC Champion following the comment on Twitter.

For the record, Torres Tweet read as follows:

"If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises."

White said he didn't find out about it until he was on Michael Landsburg's talk show in Canada, and he took swift action afterward.

"This morning I'm on [Michael] Landsburg's show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted," White explained. "Now there's no explanation for that. There's absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that's funny or that's a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you're dealing with a guy that's a smart guy, that owns his own business, that's been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He's no longer with the UFC."

"Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over."

With the heat that Griffin came under, White couldn't believe another fighter would go down the same road with a comment like that, and he said it was simply wrong.

"He said he hadn't heard what happened to Forrest [Griffin, who drew fire for tweeting "Rape is the new missionary" last month]," White said incredulously. "Really? Where do you live? What business are you in? How do you not hear about these things? You should have paid more attention. It's to the point now where, there's going be times when things happen and mistakes are made. I cannot defend Miguel Torres. I cannot defend what he said. What he said makes no sense other than when he says, ?It was a joke.? Well, I don't think that's a funny joke. I think it's disturbing."

"Everybody's going to have an opinion on something, and not everybody's going to get along. I've had my words with fans on Twitter too. When people come on Twitter and say dumb s*** to you, expect to get some dumb s*** back. But for a guy to go out and talk about a 'rape van' being a 'surprise van,' there's no defense for that."

It may seem unfair to some that Torres would get his release when Griffin and Evans are still on the roster, and there are others who have made public mistakes still fighting in the UFC. However, this is a situation where White feels Torres was wrong, and the way he reacted afterward wasn't to the UFC's liking.

"I'm a realist. I treat people and I deal with my fighters and I deal with the fans like a real person. I don't come out and read canned statements written by our lawyers," White said. "I deal with the guys on a case-by-case basis and how they handle themselves. We're all entitled to make mistakes. I'm not one of these guys where if you make a mistake, I'm gonna try to tear your life down and burn it to the ground.

"We just had one of our fighters, Chris Leben, test positive for [Oxycodone and Oxymorphone], and he's been suspended for a year by the UFC. Now with the suspension it's not like, 'Hey, Chris, you're suspended, we don't want to hear from you in a year, good luck with your career and everything else, and if it doesn't work out, oh well, there's a million other fighters waiting to line up.' I care about this guy, as a person, as a human being, before he's a fighter. And I want to make sure Chris Leben is OK. If he needs any type of therapy or rehab or whatever it might be to make sure his personal life is on track, that means more to me than anything else. There's going to be guys that are going to make mistakes."

"Some guys are going to make mistakes bad enough that they're going to burn themselves to the ground. It's all in how a guy handles himself after he makes a mistake. That's what I care about."

Penick's Analysis: The arbitrary nature of this release isn't going to sit well with a lot of fans, especially when he talked in the interview about Evans' statement and Griffin's as well, but it comes down to how fighters handle themselves in situations. It's similar in some respects to White cutting Paul Daley "for life" because of the way he reacted when he was in the wrong after sucker-punching Josh Koscheck. We obviously can't know the behind-the scenes conversation that went on between White and Torres, but clearly White didn't like whatever he heard from Torres, and it's led to this. It's really unfortunate that fans will miss out on some big fights with him in the bantamweight division, but it's the type of thing he brought upon himself.

Chael Sonnen and Arianny Celeste engage in war of words

Chael Sonnen and Arianny Celeste engage in war of wordsChael Sonnen knows how to start a fight. Though his sharp words are usually aimed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and anyone who supports Silva, he turned towards UFC Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste when asked about her in an interview to promote the World MMA Awards.

He was asked who he is supporting for Ring Girl of the Year in the awards ceremony that will take place in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

We only had one and that was Chandella [Powell]. The other was the IQ card girl. Arianny [Celeste] kind of walks around and holds up her latest test score. One time when there was a title fight, she got all the way up to five and we were very proud of her.

Ouch. Celeste and Sonnen then sparred on Twitter with messages that have been deleted. Celeste started:

Hey what's ur name.. after @spideranderson kicks your [expletive]..u won't even be able to count to 5!! Get ready to kiss brazils [expletive]!

And Sonnen's reply:

Seems easy to wear a bikini and seems easy to walk in a circle, but try walking in a circle while wearing a bikini. Talented girl.

The original interviewer didn't ask Sonnen about the source of his issues with Celeste, but with Sonnen, he usually doesn't need a reason to call someone out. He became angry with Canada for no good reason, and a man who can hate that lovely, docile country for no good reason could easily extend his dislike to Celeste.

At the same time, it could also be Sonnen's marketing mind at work. He is hosting the awards, meaning that there is a fair to middling chance that he will have to share a stage with Celeste. This spat sure makes you want to watch the awards on FoxSports.com, doesn't it?

America wants ?Mayhem? Miller to punch Michael Bisping in the face

The fine folks at Ranger Up created a short film expressing a desire that is present in so many proud Americans: the wish to see Michael Bisping punched in the face.

Over the course of this season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Bisping has endeared himself to few people. His "pranks," dislike of Miller's dog, and use of a mole to try to find out inside information on his opponent add on to to tarnish the image of a man who isn't exactly loved in the U.S. as is.

Miller will get the chance to make America happy on Saturday at "The Ultimate Fighter" finale. It's been more than a year since he last fought, with his last bout a submission of Kazushi Sakuraba. Bisping's last fight was a TKO of Jorge Rivera, most remembered for how Bisping spit at Rivera's cornermen after the win. Will Miller take the win, or will the British fighter? Speak your mind in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC Champ Jon Jones questions Rashad Evans' chin, says Phil Davis fight closer than fans realize

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans still have no love lost between one another, and as Evans is once again taking another fight before getting a bout with his former teammate, Jones believes it's possible Rashad doesn't make it through to him. Jones faces Lyoto Machida this weekend at UFC 140, and Evans takes on Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 2; on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani this week, Jones said he leans towards Evans in the matchup, but he also questioned the chin of his former teammate:

"Phil Davis can win more than he realizes, he has to be comfortable striking. I won't say too much because I have my own ideas on how to beat Rashad, but I don't think Rashad has a chin at all. Trust me, Rashad does not have chin. But it will be a closer fight than people will realize."

Jason Miller cornered tonight by Kevin James, Michael Bisping says it?s all part of what makes ?Mayhem? less than legit contender

Jason Miller has a lot to prove to UFC fans tonight at the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter Finale."

He's built a nice following amongst hardcore MMA fans by augmenting his fight career with satellite radio and television shows, but his opponent says Miller's standing in the MMA world is built on a myth.

"While I've been in the UFC fighting the best fighters in the world, he's been flying around the world fighting a bunch of washed-up journeymen and not doing a very good job of it," Bisping told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "The only reason he's here now and the only reason he got "The Ultimate Fighter" spot is because he's a loudmouth TV personality."

Miller (24-7, 0-1 UFC) laughs at that assertion. He's a highly sought after teacher of the sport in southern California. Even with all of his side gigs, he still has his eyes on the fighting prize.

"It's paramount. That's what kicked off all this other stuff," Miller said. "I wouldn't have a radio career or a television career without fighting. The past year, I really put in the effort into doing the things in the gym that are going to help my fight career."

Miller will flash a little of that entertainment-world star power with "King of Queen" stars Kevin James in his corner. The 30-year-old Miller met James during the filming of MMA-themed film "Here's Comes the Boom."

Below is James speaking about the UFC-approved film.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Strikeforce and UFC bookings on deck

The UFC and Strikeforce have been hard at work, putting together bouts to fill cards early in the new year.

-- Strikeforce's has scheduled a Showtime card for the Hard Rock in Las Vegas on January 7. The rumored headliner is Tim Kennedy taking on Luke Rockhold for the middleweight belt.

-- When the UFC cut several Golden Glory fighters over their management practices, Jon Olav Einemo was caught in the crossfire and lost his job. Now he's back in the UFC and is expected to fight Mike Russow at UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago. Russow is a police officer in Chicago, and will likely bring many fans to the United Center on January 28. Though Mark Munoz vs. Chael Sonnen is the rumored main event for that card, nothing has been finalized.

-- UFC 142 in Brazil had two fights added. Paulo Thiago will fight Mike Pyle. Considering how the crowd favored Thiago at UFC 134, expect another loud ovation for the Brazilian special forces officer. Ednaldo Oliveira will make his UFC debut against heavyweight Rob Broughton.

-- Rafael Natal will take on UFC rookie Michael Kuiper at UFC 143 in Las Vegas on Super Bowl weekend. Kuiper is undefeated, having fought most his bouts in Europe. Natal is coming off of a win over Paul Bradley at UFC 133.

-- Saturday's preliminary bouts before "The Ultimate Fighter" finale will be aired on Facebook. Those bouts still haven't been announced, and are expected to be full of cast members from the 14th season and the final TUF season on Spike.

-- MFC champ Ryan Jimmo signed with the UFC and will fight Karlos Vemola at UFC on FX 1 in Nashville.

iJudgeFights.com seeks beta testers, eyes fan education and interaction

If you're an MMA fan that's been enraged by a decision, chances are you've used Twitter to commiserate and argue with fellow fans.

iJudgeFights.com, a website currently in development, hopes to give would-be judges a place not only to vent, but to score fights and measure them against those who do it for a living.

"I wouldn't say people are outraged, but there are periods where people are disappointed with the outcome of fights, and we feel that not only are we going to be able to help, but create interaction that hasn't existed before," iJudgeFights co-founder Jonathan Wakrat today told MMAjunkie.com.
