Dana White: Fighters already in Strikeforce will be staying in Strikeforce
| |
"The guys that are in Strikeforce are staying in Strikeforce," White said (quotes transcribed by MMAWeekly.com). "Strikeforce lives."
That means that current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will not be transitioning to the UFC after his fight with Jorge Masvidal next weekend, a point that will no doubt upset many fans, and probably Melendez himself. However, while his expected move over to the top of the UFC's lightweight class isn't happening, White assures that Strikeforce's fighters will be happy they're there.
"Gilbert Melendez and all the guys that are in the Strikeforce show and with Showtime, I will make fights [for them]," White said. "They will be happy to be there. Believe me, I got this thing worked out. It's going to be good for everybody. It's going to be good for the fighters, it's going to be good for Showtime, and it's going to be good for Strikeforce."
Penick's Analysis: I'm withholding judgment on that call until we see what the UFC's plans with Strikeforce are, but it's hard not to be disappointed that Melendez isn't going to be coming into the Octagon when it was looking like a mere formality after his fight with Masvidal. There aren't a ton of other fighters on Strikeforce's roster that would have been clamored for to be in the Octagon, but there are a handful fans will wish were there. Still, if the UFC is going to perhaps transition some fighters over to Strikeforce to boost up the roster, or if they've got some other ideas we haven't thought of yet, things could definitely work for all sides. At the least, I'm intrigued to see what they're going to do.

With next season, Bellator makes move to Friday nights
Bellator Fighting Championships, the tournament-based promotion, is moving their broadcast from Saturdays to Fridays for their next season, which is expected to start in March. Instead of competing with UFC pay-per-view and Fox events, which normally air on Saturdays, Bellator will now go up against "The Ultimate Fighter," and promotions such as MFC and XFC, which usually air on HDNet, and possibly Showtime airings of Strikeforce: Challengers and M-1 Global bouts.
USA Today spoke to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney about the change:
"We didn't really dig into the analysis and try to assess who was one, who was two and who was three, or what we were trying to avoid the most," he said. "It just kind of came down to an analysis of, is there a night where all the factors made it to where we can maximize live-event attendance, where we can reach the largest audience from an television perspective, to give MMA fans an opportunity to really make a night for themselves with Bellator."
Bellator will move to Spike, the UFC's cable TV home until Saturday, in 2013, but the 2012 season will continue to air on MTV2. The upcoming season will feature fights between welterweight champ Ben Askren and Douglas Lima, Hector Lombard and Alexander Shlemenko's rematch, plus welterweight and bantamweight titles.
The promotion has consistently put on exciting fights, but they were lost upon an MMA audience that would focus on the UFC. Michael Chandler's upset of Eddie Alvarez was one of the year's best fights, but went against UFC 139, and aired not long before Dan Henderson and Mauricio Rua's epic bout.
Friday means that Bellator will no longer battle with these events, but it's not a perfect day. Bellator will still face plenty of competition on Fridays, both from other MMA offerings and from other sports.
Will a Friday night air date make Bellator easier for you to watch? Vote in the poll and tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Five bantamweights who should make the drop to flyweight
UFC president Dana White said this week that the promotion will soon have an announcement on adding a flyweight class. Bringing in 125-lb. fighters will not only add some fast-paced excitement to cards, but will also create a welcome home for fighters who were undersized at bantamweight's 135-lb. limit.
Five fighters who would welcome a 10-lb. drop:
Joe Benavidez: He is on a three-fight win streak, but he couldn't get past bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz on his first title try. At 5-foot-4, Benavidez could come up with another title run at flyweight and avoid the possible problem of having to challenge his mentor, contender and former champ Urijah Faber.
Chris Cariaso: At bantamweight, the 5-foot-3 Cariaso is 2-1 in his last three fights, all decisions. Smaller opponents could give him the chance to break out.
John Dodson: The newest Ultimate Fighter is pint-sized, personable and exciting in the cage. In other words, he's the exact kind of fighter to become the face of a new division.
Louis Gaudinot: At "The Ultimate Fighter" 14 finale, Gaudinot could not get out from underneath Johnny Bedford. The size that kept him from winning will be an asset at a smaller weight class.
Demetrious Johnson: "Mighty Mouse" made an impressive run for the bantamweight belt, but lost to Cruz. He has another shot to impress as a bantam when fighting Eddie Wineland at UFC on Fox 2, but don't be surprised to see Johnson and his 5-foot-3 frame drop to flyweight.

Diaz camp says Condit is a tougher fight than GSP; Zahabi says champ rushed too hard into training
The shock of no Georges St-Pierre for another year is beginning to settle in around the MMA world.
UFC president Dana White tweeted earlier today that the promotion's 170-pound champ "blew out his ACL."
GSP's opponent at UFC 143, Nick Diaz found out that he's now facing Carlos Condit in what will be a UFC welterweight interim title fight.
MMAjunkie caught up with Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie for his take on the new fight:
"I believe he's better than GSP standing and not as good a wrestler, and [he doesn't have] as good of a top game," Gracie said. "I believe standing up, Condit is actually a more formidable opponent. So Nick is not known to force a takedown, so it's actually a harder fight, as far as standing."
St-Pierre's trainer Firas Zihabi said everyone is disappointed about the torn ACL, but also said the fighter suffered the injury by rushing back from his previous knee injury.
"I've been telling him to take it easy now and let his knee heal 100 percent, and he just always tries to find a way to work around it," Zahabi said. "But now, he's going to require surgery, so there's just no way around a surgery. You've got to do it, you've got to rest, and that's the bottom line."
"It's hard to get Georges to take time off and rest. It's a very challenging thing to do as his trainer. He's very motivated to train, and sometimes too much is too much. The mind is stronger than the body, so sometimes the body can't keep up, and I feel that that's what happened with Georges."
Anyone else worried about St-Pierre returning at 100 percent for the next few years? If he suffered a full ACL tear, that's a rough injury to return from in just 10 months.

UFC 140 Morning After: Jon Jones, a Champ With Staying Power
Filed under: UFC
Jones, who choked out Lyoto Machida in the second round of their main event showdown at UFC 140, has been the light heavyweight champion for less than nine months, and it might seem premature to proclaim him a dominant champion when he's been a champion for such a short period of time. But the talented 205-pound weight class has been an almost impossible class to rule for any significant period of time.
Until Jones, who in the last nine months has won the belt and dispatched two challengers, dominating all three of those title fights.
For those who don't know the history, Liddell won the UFC light heavyweight title by knocking out Randy Couture at UFC 57, then successfully defended the title four times before losing it to Rampage Jackson. Since then, the light heavyweight belt has been a hot potato: Rampage successfully defended the title against Dan Henderson before losing his second title defense, against Forrest Griffin. Griffin lost his first title defense to Rashad Evans. Evans lost his first title defense to Machida. Machida beat Shogun Rua in a controversial decision in his first title defense, then lost to Rua in his next fight. Rua lost his first title defense to Jones.
Now Jones has defended his title by beating Jackson and Machida, making him the first light heavyweight champ since Liddell to defend the title more than once. But the really extraordinary thing about Jones is that he so thoroughly dominates his competition that it's hard to see anyone beating him any time soon. The three men who might be next in line for the light heavyweight title -- Dan Henderson, Rashad Evans and Phil Davis -- are all great fighters, but all of them would be huge betting underdogs against Jones.
The really amazing thing about the 24-year-old Jones is that he became a UFC champion before he even reached his prime. It's shocking to think this, but we might not have seen the best Jon Jones yet. He just completed a 4-0 record in 2011 that was as good a year as we've ever seen anyone have in the Octagon, and yet he might be a better fighter in 2012.
The bottom line is that we're seeing a champion in Jon Jones who might stay the champion for the better part of this decade. There's no telling how long he might be the best at what he does.

UFC 140 notes
-- According to Compustrike, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira outlanded Frank Mir in total strikes, 31-4. And yet Mir still managed to survive the barrage of punches from Nogueira and get into position to finish Nogueira with a kimura. That was a gutsy showing from Mir.
-- It was nice to see Frank Shamrock on a UFC broadcast for the first time in more than a decade. You had to be looking closely to see him, but Shamrock was in Brian Ebersole's corner, marking the first time he's been spotted at a UFC event since the last time he fought for the promotion, in 1999. Here's hoping Shamrock and the UFC brass eventually bury the hatchet. Shamrock is an MMA legend whose career ought to be celebrated by the UFC.
-- The UFC has something special on its hands in the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung. There are few fighters in the sport who are as consistently entertaining, win or lose, as Jung, who tied the UFC record for fastest knockout with his seven-second dispatching of Mark Hominick on Saturday night. I don't think Jung is good enough to pose much of a threat to featherweight champion Jose Aldo, but he's a legitimate opponent to almost anyone else at 145 pounds. The UFC desperately needs some star power in the featherweight class, and Jung is one of the few little guys who has really caught on with the fans.
-- Constantinos Philippou was about as impressive as anyone we saw inside the Octagon at UFC 140 in his first-round TKO victory over Jared Hamman. Philippou hammered away at Hamman standing and showed a real killer instinct on the ground, immediately pouncing on Hamman and going for finishes when he knocked him down. Philippou is a vicious striker and has now won two fights in a row.
-- It was surprising how bad Krzysztof Soszynski's striking defense looked in his first-round knockout loss to Jared Hamman, but maybe it shouldn't have been. Soszynski has been around a long time and had some very impressive fights, but he has too often shown a tendency to wilt when he gets hit hard. This was Soszynski's sixth loss by knockout or TKO.
-- It wouldn't be surprising if the UFC decides to tell Tito Ortiz to hang up the gloves after his loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, considering that Ortiz is now 1-6-1 in his last eight fights. But I think Ortiz has done enough in the sport that he has earned the right to go out on his own terms, and I'd like to see him get another fight, as he said he wants. Stephan Bonnar would make a lot of sense as an opponent for Ortiz.
UFC 140 quotes
"It's an honor to be here. One of my dreams was to be here with Joe Rogan. I did it!" -- Yves Jabouin as Joe Rogan interviewed him in the Octagon after his split decision victory over Walel Watson.
"This fight's kind of a wash. I apologize to John for missing weight. Put a little asterisk next to the victory because I didn't make weight." -- Dennis Hallman, being a stand-up guy after coming in 2.5 pounds over for his lightweight fight with John Makdessi. Hallman said his move down from welterweight is permanent, so he's going to need to do a better job of getting the pounds off.
"I feel so great. t's like a dream come true. Tito Ortiz is a legend of the sport. I want to say thanks for fighting him." -- Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, showing humility after beating Ortiz.
Good call
Referee Big John McCarthy stopped the first fight of the night at exactly the right time, with 24 seconds left in the second round, as John Cholish was teeing off on Mitch Clarke on the ground. Clarke wasn't very badly hurt and seemed disappointed with the stoppage, but he also wasn't doing anything to fight back, simply turtling up and letting Cholish hit him. With Clarke looking upset at McCarthy stepping in, McCarthy patted him and said, "You got hit with a good shot."
Bad call
Referee Josh Rosenthal should have taken a point away from John Makdessi for grabbing the fence immediately after Rosenthal warned him not to. As Dennis Hallman tried to take Makdessi down early in the fight, Makdessi grabbed the fence to stay up, and Rosenthal immediately warned Makdessi to let go of the fence. Makdessi complied, but only for a couple of seconds before he grabbed the fence again as Hallman tried to take him down again. Rosenthal warned Makdessi again, but at that point he should have also deducted a point. It didn't really matter because Hallman took Makdessi down in the first round and submitted him, but I'd like to see referees more assertively enforcing the rules against grabbing the fence. Too many fighters get away with stopping takedowns by breaking the rules.
Stock up
Jake Hecht looked good in his UFC debut, unleashing a brutal elbow to hurt Rich Attonito in the second round and then finishing him with punches on the ground. Hecht had also looked solid from his back in the first round, and he appears to be a promising UFC newcomer.
Stock down
Nik Lentz went 5-0-1 with one no contest in his first seven UFC fights, and he consistently used his superior wrestling and grappling to control his opponents and grind out wins on the ground. But on Saturday night Mark Bocek beat Lentz at his own game, controlling Lentz on the ground and winning a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' cards. Lentz is a solid lightweight, but we saw on Saturday night that when he runs into a superior grappler, there's not much else he can do.
Fight I want to see next
Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans. I don't like any light heavyweight's chances against Jones, but I at least like the matchup of Jones against Evans, his former friend and training partner who's now a bitter rival. If Evans beats Davis, the UFC might finally book that long-awaited grudge match.

ROUNDTABLE: Will Tito Ortiz's bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 140 be his last?
| |
RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST?
I don't know. Ask Tito. The last time Tito and I hung out together, trolling the bar for chicks, I forgot to ask him. Boy do I feel stoopid now.
FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR??
I think if Tito wins, it's his last fight. If he loses, I could see him going for one final fight. Everybody would like to go out on top, so I think Tito might stick around a bit if he were to lose. For the record, I think Tito will win and retire in the cage afterward. I know Tito isn't who he used to be, but I still think he can get it done.??
ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
I would like to think that this WOULD be Tito Ortiz's last fight, but with fighters as with any other sport, you never know. Players retire, only to come back the next season, so even though Ortiz may say this could be his last fight, time will only tell. Even if it's not, I hope to see Ortiz bring his A game and show a younger crowd that you can be an excellent showman AND fighter, and though Chael Sonnen comes close, no one is as good as Tito Ortiz when it comes to being both.
ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
??
Tito has been done for years and one good fight in five years does not erase that fact. He is still a pay-per-rview draw, but he is not even in my top 20 light-heavyweight fighters. Rashad Evans proved that in their fight this past August at UFC 133. Tito sounds like he may be ready to retire. I have read that he has several successful business ventures and if that is the case, he should hang up the gloves after UFC 140. I am convinced though, he will hang on as long as the UFC pays him large enough paychecks. He will likely not retire after UFC 140.??
CHRIS PARK, MMATORCH UK SPECIALIST
?
I don't think so. Win or lose I am gonna buy Tito's, recently documented, two-fight retirement plan. Tito did the UFC a huge favour in taking the Rashad Evans fight, and for that reason that loss will be almost disregarded.
Whatever the outcome on Saturday, I see him getting one last fight, possibly against Rich Franklin, and then announcing his retirement on that night.
Lil Nog on the other hand; defeat, and it's P.45 time. @MMATorchUK
JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
In a recent interview with Karyn Bryant, Tito Ortiz said he only had two fights left on his contract and that he might retire once he fulfilled that contract. So win or lose, I'm sure the UFC will honor the final fight on his contract and we'll see Ortiz in the Octagon at least once more.

Frankly, his retirement can't come soon enough for me. Not because I dislike Ortiz, but because I can't stand this "People's Champion" nonsense. We all know who the "People's Champion" is, and I think it's pathetic that a shopworn Tito Ortiz is trying to garner pity for his farewell tour by hitching his wagon to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Since I feel pretty sure it'll be his last fight in the UFC, and I just can't see him fighting in Japan or in a regional show for a fraction of the money and attention, I'll say yes. The Bader upset obviously bought him a couple more fights, but Ortiz has been on borrowed time in the UFC for years now. Lil' Nog officially sends him packing with a close, exciting decision loss.
JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Ortiz seems pretty dead set on wanting to fight Forrest Griffin one more time in early 2012 for his last fight, so I think the UFC will give him that final contracted fight win or lose against Lil' Nog on Saturday. If Griffin isn't able to go in the spring, or doesn't want that matchup for his next fight, then it's certainly possible Ortiz will walk away without that last fight, and may be more possible if Ortiz wins this fight in Toronto.

Sonnen watching TUF main event closely, is he set to face the ?Mayhem?-Bisping winner?
The long-rumored Mark Munoz-Chael Sonnen tilt still hasn't been announced, so it's starting to look like a back-up plan at best.
Speaking just before the World MMA Awards show, Sonnen makes it pretty obvious, in this short video with FightHub.tv, that he's awaiting the result of the Michael Bisping-Jason Miller fight (0:32 mark) on Saturday at the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter" Finale.
If Bisping gets by Miller and comes away healthy, Jan. 28 seems like a quick turnaround, but the Brit would have to be interested in the fight.
