UFC 142 PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and fight predictions for "Aldo vs. Mendes" event in Brazil

The UFC returns to Brazil on Saturday night with their second card in Rio de Janeiro in the last five months. There's decidedly less flair to this event the second time around, with Anderson Silva, Shogun Rua, and Antonio Minotauro Nogueira being replaced by Jose Aldo, Vitor Belfort, and Rousimar Palhares as the top three local fighters on the card. Still, it's a card that should provide a lot of action, as well as another rabid crowd at the HSBC Arena. Here's what's on tap for the event:
Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes (Featherweight Championship)
UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is dangerous everywhere. He's a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt who has been so fantastic with his Muay Thai striking game that his ground game hasn't been put to use often in his career. He works leg kicks with vicious accuracy, he is capable of showing brilliant displays of violence with his hands and feet, and he can overwhelm his opposition with a relentless attack if the gameplan calls for it.
Chad Mendes is a worker. An immensely talented wrestler, Mendes has taken a nearly unstoppable ground game and has added an increasingly more impressive striking game to his arsenal as well. He showed off his hands in his UFC debut against Michihiro Omigawa, knocking him down several times and landing some very good strikes on the ground as well en route to a unanimous decision win.
Though he's definitely a grinder with his wrestling game, it's not of the stifling, control-only style of, say, Tyron Woodley, and he's able to do damage while holding position. After seeing what Mark Hominick was able to do late against Aldo, Mendes believes he'll be able to take Aldo down early and often, and believes he's got the gameplan to frustrate Aldo through 25 minutes.
Mendes absolutely has the type of style that can give Aldo trouble if the Champ is unable to implement his striking attack early. If Aldo allows Mendes to take over the pace of the fight early, and if he can't keep himself standing, Mendes can take at least three rounds of the fight.
However, Aldo isn't going to take Mendes' wrestling game lightly, and he and his camp have shown a very good propensity for coming up with smart gameplans to take advantage of different things in his opponent's game. Aldo is absolutely the superior striker, and though Mendes is no slouch on the feet, he's not going to be connecting on Aldo the way he did against Omigawa. The edge goes to Aldo in this fight, because he's been in these types of fights before, he's a better striker, and his takedown defense has improved as well. Mendes is a game challenge, but I see Aldo taking the win in front of his home country.
PREDICTION: Aldo via TKO in the third round
Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson (Middleweight)
Vitor Belfort is a violent man inside of the cage. Of his 20 career wins, 14 have come by TKO or knockout, and he leaves no questions about what he aims to do when he is in a fight. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, despite a terrific wrestling base, has picked up all but one of his UFC wins by TKO or knockout himself.
Belfort has only been stopped by two fighters in his career. Randy Couture finished him in his fifth career fight in 1997, then doctors called a halt to their third meeting seven years later after the third round. He went over six more years without being stopped until Anderson Silva's front-face-kick sent him packing in February.
That makes for a lofty goal for Johnson, who makes his middleweight debut in this fight. However, on that same note, Johnson has not been legitimately stopped by strikes in his career. His only TKO loss should have been a disqualification or a no contest, as his loss to Kevin Burns in 2008 ended due to a vicious eye poke. He's been submitted twice by a couple of solid grapplers, but he's a very well-rounded fighter overall.
This is an interesting fight to make a pick on. Belfort is a historically durable fighter with a vicious streak, but Johnson comes into his new division on a mission to make an immediate impact. Belfort can give Johnson the worst beating of his career if he can connect early, but Johnson's wrestling game and his instinctual grappling are likely to be his saving grace if he gets in trouble. Johnson may end this fight on the feet or with some ground and pound, but he'll have to get through some adversity in the fight, and it may not be an easy one.
UPDATE: With Johnson coming in grossly overweight, and needing to stay under 205 for the fight to take place on Saturday, there is a major possibility that the fight doesn't take place. And even if it does, he might be drained. However, with what will likely be a 20 lb. advantage, Johnson has the size to do what he pleases in this fight. I'm going to keep my pick as it is, but the dynamic of the fight has changed significantly.
PREDICTION: Johnson via decision
Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio (Middleweight)
Palhares hates your legs. He hates your ankles, your knees, and any other joint he can grab onto. He's got a mean streak, and he will injure a fighter if they don't tap out quick enough (and sometimes if they do). Massenzio is 2-3 in his UFC career, 1-1 since returning last summer, but while he's a submission-based fighter himself, he's not on Palhares' level. Massenzio might give a good showing for a time, but this is a fight poised to showcase the Brazilian fighter in front of his hometown country fans.
PREDICTION: Palhares via submission in the first
Erick Silva vs. Carlo Prater (Welterweight)
Despite an immensely exciting 40-second knockout in his UFC debut last August, and a lengthy history of stoppage wins, it's hard to know just what Erick Silva brings to the table on the national scene. It's the same case with any of the fighters who have spent most - if not all - of their careers in Brazil. Silva could very well be a top-flight welterweight, but until he gets tested against some more proven competition than he faced in his native Brazil it's hard to say what his upside is.
Prater, on the other hand, is a fairly well-known commodity. He's a solid veteran of 40 fights who has 29 wins to his credit, and he enters the UFC for the first time on the strength of four straight wins. However, those wins have come against a lesser level of competition than he faced from 2008-2010, where he went 4-6 and suffered losses in the WEC to both Carlos Condit and Brock Larson.
This is a fight that should be Silva's for the taking if he's going to prove to be a force in the welterweight division. This is the type of fight he needs to win, and he needs to do so in impressive fashion to take his next step up the ladder. I think we'll see that on Saturday night.
PREDICTION: Silva via submission in the second round
Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim (Lightweight)
This is a fantastically exciting matchup on paper. Etim returned in November after 18 months out of action and choked out Edward Faaloloto in just 17 seconds. That win bounced him back from a submission loss to Rafael dos Anjos, and he's now got five stoppage wins in the UFC.
Barboza is undefeated at 9-0, and brings a very fun-to-watch striking game with him into his fourth UFC appearance. Barboza's also got a reach advantage in the fight despite being two inches shorter than Etim.
This fight should be an absolute blast to watch for as long as it lasts, but while Etim is a fun, at times flashy, and exciting lightweight, Barboza is rightfully the favorite. Etim won't go away easily, but Barboza should take this fight in front of a rabid home-country crowd.
PREDICTION: Barboza via TKO in the second round

Teammate Rashad Evans expects "better than ever" Anthony Johnson at UFC 142; predicts 2012 title run

UFC 142's Anthony Johnson takes his first fight in the middleweight division tomorrow night in Brazil, making a move many felt has been in his best interest for some time. Always competitive in the welterweight division, Johnson was bogged down by a difficult weight cut, one that he missed more than once.
In preparation for Vitor Belfort, however, Johnson hasn't had to concentrate as much time on cutting weight, and that extra 15 lbs. he gets to work with is an overall boost to what he can do in the cage. In fact, teammate and former Champion Rashad Evans sees a vastly different fighter in this camp than he has previously, and he believes Johnson will be able to show his true potential in this new weight class.
"Rumble is better than you've ever seen him before," Evans said in comments released by the UFC. "I promise you that on Saturday night you'll see the best version of Rumble you have ever seen. You are supposed to root for your teammates, but, I am keeping it real, the 185 lbs version of Rumble is a killer.
"Where he is right now, he's so scary," Evans continued. "You can't imagine how much of a difference moving up to middleweight has made to not only his strength but also his technique. As a welterweight, maybe 60% of his camp was about making 170 lbs, leaving only 40% for boxing, striking, wrestling, BJJ, judo and everything else. Much less than half of his time was actually spent on improving his skills and transitions.
"Now he's spending maybe 80% and more on technique and real fitness training, not just training to lose pounds. He's a scary, scary athlete right now. In practice with him some times, I was 'Damn! What the hell is happening here? I'm not used to getting my ass kicked like this!' but he was just so 'on' he was beating my ass all over the gym on certain days."
It's lofty praise, even if it's coming from a teammate, but Evans honestly believes that Johnson is headed on to big things in 2012. In fact, Evans feels strongly that a title run at middleweight is very much in the near future for the man they call "Rumble."
"I like Vitor a lot, and everyone respects him as a fighter, but Rumble will send a message to the entire division this Saturday in Rio," Evans said. "Honestly, being up a weight is the best thing he ever did. There's no doubt in my mind he will be challenging everyone in the division. It's ridiculous, the difference it has made.
"Keeping it real, Rumble can beat anyone in the entire division. He will be fighting for the UFC middleweight title in 2012. I almost feel bad for ruining the surprise of how badass he is as middleweight, but you'll see to see the fight tomorrow to appreciate what I mean."
Penick's Analysis: This really could be the first step in a major career move for Johnson. He was moving up the ladder at 170 lbs., and even though he had lost to Josh Koscheck just a few fights ago, he's had the skills to be considered a top-flight guy. Getting rid of a brutal weight cut and still being one of the bigger guys means he shouldn't have too much of an issue transitioning into the 185 lb. weight class, but we'll have to see him in action on Saturday night to really judge where he's at. If he comes in and destroys Belfort, that will be a huge statement, and will go a long way towards making Evans' predictions come true in 2012.

As a welterweight, maybe 60% of his camp was about making 170 lbs, leaving only 40% for boxing, striking, wrestling, BJJ, judo and everything else. Much less than half of his time was actually spent on improving his skills and transitions.
"Now he's spending maybe 80% and more on technique and real fitness training, not just training to lose pounds. He's a scary, scary athlete right now. In practice with him some times, I was 'Damn! What the hell is happening here? I'm not used to getting my ass kicked like this!' but he was just so 'on' he was beating my ass all over the gym on certain days."
It's lofty praise, even if it's coming from a teammate, but Evans honestly believes that Johnson is headed on to big things in 2012. In fact, Evans feels strongly that a title run at middleweight is very much in the near future for the man they call "Rumble."
"I like Vitor a lot, and everyone respects him as a fighter, but Rumble will send a message to the entire division this Saturday in Rio," Evans said. "Honestly, being up a weight is the best thing he ever did. There's no doubt in my mind he will be challenging everyone in the division. It's ridiculous, the difference it has made.
"Keeping it real, Rumble can beat anyone in the entire division. He will be fighting for the UFC middleweight title in 2012. I almost feel bad for ruining the surprise of how badass he is as middleweight, but you'll see to see the fight tomorrow to appreciate what I mean."
Penick's Analysis: This really could be the first step in a major career move for Johnson. He was moving up the ladder at 170 lbs., and even though he had lost to Josh Koscheck just a few fights ago, he's had the skills to be considered a top-flight guy. Getting rid of a brutal weight cut and still being one of the bigger guys means he shouldn't have too much of an issue transitioning into the 185 lb. weight class, but we'll have to see him in action on Saturday night to really judge where he's at. If he comes in and destroys Belfort, that will be a huge statement, and will go a long way towards making Evans' predictions come true in 2012.

Lyoto Machida offers to fight Chael Sonnen with one arm
Machida used his Twitter account to call out Sonnen. In Portugese, he wrote a message that translated to, "Chael Sonnen, just got out of surgery, but can give you your gift inside the octagon with one arm and only you accept the fight."
Sonnen responded that he "doesn't have time for pee-pee mouth," referring to Machida's practice of drinking his own urine.
"All the time I can spare him is the time to cold cock him and walk away," Sonnen added.
Sonnen's sights are currently set on Mark Munoz, whom he will fight on Jan. 28 at UFC on Fox 2.

Fighting in Brazil Again, Vitor Belfort Thrilled With How Far MMA Has Come
Vitor Belfort's first UFC fight came at what may have been the promotion's lowest moment. So he takes particular joy in seeing how far the UFC has come.Belfort, who has been in the UFC longer than any other active fighter, is preparing to fight back home in Brazil on Saturday at UFC 142. But as he discussed the upcoming fight on Thursday, he also remembered his very first fight in the UFC, which came at a time when the entire sport of MMA was on the verge of collapse.
That would be UFC 12 on Feb. 7, 1997. At the age of 19, Belfort was an entrant in the four-man heavyweight tournament originally scheduled to take place that night in New York. But as politicians began to speak out against what they viewed as a savage bloodsport, the New York government told the UFC it was no longer welcome in its state, and the UFC had to scramble to move the event to Alabama at the last minute.
"My first fight, we had to travel all night to Alabama," Belfort said. "We could only fight in Alabama. It was my first UFC. And then after so much investment they were able to remove that stigma in the U.S. and we slowly won over different countries."
Winning over different countries included Brazil, where Belfort said it hasn't always been easy. Although MMA traces its origins to Brazil, the sport has also faced some of the same opposition there that it has faced in the United States. Belfort, who beat Wanderlei Silva at UFC Brazil in 1998 but hasn't fought back home since then, said it's been a struggle to get people back home to accept that mixed martial arts is a legitimate sporting competition, not a violent spectacle.

"We really had to be pioneers, here in Brazil especially," Belfort said.
Belfort said it used to frustrate him when people thought that because he fights professionally for a living, that meant he must also be a thug who gets involved in street fights. He said that in the early days of the UFC, people would ask him if anyone who ran into him in the street should fear him, not understanding that for him, fighting is just a job.
"I remember my first interview they asked me, 'If someone crashes into your car, what would you do?' I stopped and thought, 'If they crash into Pavarotti's car, does he have to sing an opera?' So people have prejudice against fighting," Belfort said.
Now the UFC has reached the point where it can sell thousands of tickets for a major event in Brazil, and Belfort says he believes Brazilians have come to understand what MMA is all about.
"The sport was born in this country and it's been difficult to gain acceptance, but we actually overcame this hurdle," Belfort said. "The sport has a lot to teach people. Martial arts is about physical and moral respect. . . . In martial arts we have this balance. So if someone crashes into my car I will come out of the car, get their license plate and talk about the damage and who has to pay. People relate our sport to aggression and it's not that at all. It's a contact sport but we respect each other greatly and we don't use it outside of the sport."
Belfort said that he's thrilled to see how many people across his home country are enjoying the UFC.
"Children, the elderly, families, women can understand our sport," Belfort said. "There's a lot for our sport to offer."

UFC 142: Mike Pyle is fired up to fight in front of hostile crowd
Mike Pyle has fought all over the world, but even he admits tomorrow night at UFC 142, Rio de Janeiro could be unlike anything he's ever seen.
"We're fighting and we have to fight other countryman on their soil. That makes it fun. Get out there in some hostile territory," Pyle told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "It's kind of different. You don't get booed and looked at in strange ways at home. It's cool. Makes me feel like a super villain."
Pyle won't be walking through the Rio crowd with complete unfamiliarity. He cornerd Forrest Griffin back at UFC 134 and saw how intense the Brazilians were that night.
"The energy was ... I just got chill bumps just now thinking about that night when we walked out, how intense the crowd was," Pyle said. "They were into it dude. I can't even put it into words. It was awesome."
Pyle, 36, has fought in Denmark, Russia and the U.K. This will be his first time in Brazil and he's facing Bahia, Brazil native Ricardo Funch. The American is coming off a quick loss against Rory MacDonald. He made sure to make some changes to get back on the right track.
Pyle added a new jiu-jitsu coach, Mitch Coats and Nate Pettit, who's serving as his main coach.

Large, in-charge Anthony Johnson has big plans for Vitor Belfort
At UFC 142, Anthony Johnson will make his middleweight debut against Vitor Belfort. Johnson always appeared to be too large for welterweight and sometimes struggled with his weight cut. Judging by his size in this video, Johnson will be comfortable at 185 lbs. (Warning: A few NSFW words are dropped in it.)
Johnson plans on submitting and knocking out Belfort in Brazil on Saturday, plus throw a spinning kick from the guard. Though this seems logistically unlikely, I have my fingers crossed that it will happen, because Johnson would then get a bonus for both Knockout and Submission of the night.

Two lightweight strikers taken out by grapplers in their last fights will get a chance to put on a show in Montreal, as the UFC on Wednesday announced that Anthony Njokuani will take on John Makdessi on the March 24 card at the Bell Centre.
Njokuani lost a split decision to Danny Castillo last month in his last bout at UFC 141, getting out-wrestled for two of the three rounds. Makdessi, meanwhile, was manhandled by Dennis Hallman in his last fight at UFC 140, handing him his first career loss in the process.

Five ways the UFC can survive a post-Brock Lesnar world
But his decision to hang up the four-ounce gloves to spend time with his wife and suddenly deceased animals doesn't have to be the death knell for the UFC.
1. Build up Alistair Overeem vs. Junior dos Santos as battle of skill and size. The next heavyweight UFC championship battle will be between two huge men who can hit really hard. Though that's reason enough to tune in, the UFC can only go to that well so many times. They would be better served by pointing out how dos Santos is a skilled puncher and Overeem is a master of strategy, not just two behemoths winging at each other.
2. Get Jon Jones on every talk show, magazine cover and any other piece of media. The light heavyweight champ is personable outside the Octagon and unstoppable in it. He is the exact person the UFC can build their next big growth spurt on, but to do it, he needs to be the guy your mom watches on "The View."
3. Embrace the heel of Chael Sonnen. Villains sell tickets, whether it's because the buyers love to hate him or they secretly envy the way he embraces the dark side. Sonnen is a first-rate talker who Dana White compared to Muhammad Ali, and is incredibly skilled at the heel role. The UFC needs to use that. Pull from his best speeches and press conferences for commercials. He called himself "the real American Idol," and that line should run at least once during Fox's broadcast of the incredibly popular show. If Fox is serious about promoting his fight with Mark Munoz at UFC on Fox 2, put him on the show.
4. Put the lighter weights center stage. "The thing that's really sad about the 'Cyborg' thing is, it makes you reallyu wonder the validation of all those other fights," Coker said after this weekend's event in Las Vegas.
Cyborg claimed last week that a supplement caused the positive test. Coker won't give her a pass.
"At the end of the day, the athlete has to be accountable for their actions. She's no different," Coker said. "[...] If you're going to cheat you shouldn't be competing against other professional athletes that aren't cheating."
