STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Herschel Walker looking to be an advocate for fighter's rights, wanting to prove himself as a fighter first

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WalkerHershel_MK150b_13.jpg
Herschel Walker is stepping back into the cage for the second time this Saturday at Strikeforce: San Jose on Showtime, and while the 48-year-old is taking things one fight at a time, he does have a reason for wanting to compete in the sport in the first place.

"My thing is I want to be a good ambassador for the sport, but being an ambassador doesn't mean you have to be fighting," Walker said during a pre-fight conference call this week. "What I had to do was at first prove that I could fight. I've always said I hate trainers that want to tell someone to do something, but yet they can't do it."

For Walker, by working closely with the American Kickboxing Academy for the last 18 months, he's gaining an understanding of the plight many young fighters face, and wants to be an advocate to help fighters get better pay, health coverage and to help develop a fighter's union as well, but he believes he needed to prove himself as "one of them" before he could open his mouth about it.

"I want to be able to talk about this MMA stuff, but I want to at least have the knowledge that I've been in the cage before and I've done it," he said. "I want them to know I'm here to help. I'm not here to hurt."

But as he heads into his second fight this Saturday, against Scott Carson, Walker continued to heap praise upon the fighters and coaches he's worked with to bring him along in the sport.

"All the guys in the gym have been very helpful," he said. "These are true fighters in the gym. They got fights coming up all the time, and yet they still take time out and say, 'Wait a minute Herschel, you're doing this wrong, let's do this,' and I really thank them for that."

The longtime athlete remains a competitor in all walks of life, and he pointed to that competitive nature as his drive for wanting to take this fight and continue in this latest endeavor.

"Competition is everything," he said. "My thing is, I never have to prove anything to anybody. Anything I have to prove is to myself. My first fight I really, really enjoyed it. I Thank Strikeforce and Showtime for the opportunity, but I didn't know if they were going to give me another opportunity. And I'm thrilled and happy that they are giving me another chance."

For Walker, it's about proving to himself that he's capable of whatever he believes he can do, and while MMA is what he's focused on right now, he also believes he'd be able to compete in the NFL today.

"I know I can play [football]," Walker stated. "If I continue to stay in the shape I'm in now, I know I can play when I'm 50. Right now, if you asked if I can play today, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind I can play football today, that I can help out a team today."

Whatever Walker decides to do after Saturday's fight, he continues to approach this sport with the utmost adoration and respect, and whether he steps in the cage again or not, he will look to help other fighters in the sport in any way he can.

Penick's Analysis: I think Walker's aspiration to be an advocate for fighters is great. He has some clout as a high profile athlete that played for a longtime in the NFL and was a U.S. Olympian. By going through what his fellow fighters are going through and experiencing first hand the trials and tribulations of being a fighter and stepping in the cage, he is gaining knowledge of what these fighters go through and what still needs to be done for them. Even if a fighter's union is perhaps an unrealistic goal for the near future, if he can do any good in getting fighters better pay and health coverage from a major organization or on a larger scale, it will be a great thing.

UFC Fight for the Troops: Rani Yahya Beats Mike Brown

by Michael David SmithFormer featherweight champion Mike Brown has lost his second UFC fight in just three weeks.

Brown, who was hoping to bounce back from a split decision loss to Diego Nunes at UFC 125, instead dropped a unanimous decision to Rani Yahya at the UFC Fight for the Troops 2. Brown is now on a two-fight losing streak and has dropped four of his last six, and it's fair to wonder how much the former champ has left.

Yahya snapped a two-fight losing streak of his own and looked good in the process. He'll be a fighter to keep an eye on in the UFC's new featherweight division.

"It was a very tough fight," Yahya said afterward. "Mike is a winner, he's a warrior. He's a 35-year-old warrior that took a fight on two-week's notice and fought at the last UFC, so he should get credit for that."

UFC QUOTABLES: Kenny Florian says if Melvin Guillard thinks he deserves a title shot over him, he should fight him and beat him

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FlorianKenny_CG_150_40.jpg
"It doesn't make sense. There's a lot of guys working hard. It's who the best fighter is. If Melvin thinks he deserves a shot over me, he should fight me and beat me. It's always about who the best fighter is. Who has he beaten? What has he done? That's great he's finally considered a top contender. Losing to Joe Stevenson in the first round isn't gonna get you that shot. You have to be consistent. He has to separate himself from the pack. I would take that fight."

-Kenny Florian talks to ProMMARadio (via MMAMania.com) about Melvin Guillard's contention that he deserves a title shot after his win over Evan Dunham.

Penick's Analysis: Kenny's definitely got a point, and actually that fight makes a ton of sense for the UFC to put together. It depends on how soon the UFC wants to get Guillard back into action, but he may get an opportunity to take that fight when Florian returns from injury in May. Florian's usually not one to take digs at other fighters, especially with his commentating job on ESPN2's MMA Live, but he got in a little one there at Guillard's loss to Stevenson. This could be a nice little heated bout that could be matched up by the UFC, and I'd be all for this fight if they go that way.

Hominick fighting for title shot, Roop isn't; Is that fair?

Mark Hominick is just over a day away from the second biggest fight of his life. If he downs George Roop at Fight for the Troops 2, Hominick gets a shot at the biggest fight of his career, a title shot against Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champ. Roop's situation is different. Even with a win, there is no title shot. Essentially this is just another fight ... for now.

MMA fans have grown accustomed to title eliminators, so why switch the approach? Roop is the guy who could be complaining, but he's not. He understands the reality of the 145-pound division.

"I don't take it too much as disrespect," Roop told MMAjunkie radio. "I understand he's the No. 1 contender, and if he can get past me – (and that's) a big 'can' with a question mark on it – I do think he deserves it."

Hominick, 28, has been long regarded as a possible title contender. His striking is top notch and he's shored up most of his weaknesses on the ground. The Canadian has won four straight, but you could make the argument that Roop's recent opponents have actually been more impressive that the guy line for a title shot.

"But if you look at the caliber of fighters I've been fighting – (former champ) Eddie Wineland, (Leonard) Garcia on a week-and-a-half's notice, and Chan Sung Jung, who (supposedly) couldn't be knocked out – I fought top-caliber guys, and I step up and take fights."

Roop knows he can't talk himself into a title shot before the fight, but he does control his own destiny tomorrow night. A devastating win on Spike TV may force the promotion's hand. If offered Aldo, he won't shy away from the fight.

"It's a big deal, and I think Mark deserves it if he gets past me. But that's a big if," Roop said. "I don't plan on losing this fight. It'd be nice for me to fight Jose Aldo, as well. We'll see how Jan. 22 plays out."

This is actually a return to the UFC for Hominick (19-8). A relatively small 145 pounder, he actually fought twice for the promotion as a lightweight back in 2006. He went 2-0 against Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards.

Roop has an example to follow. Josh Grispi was the last guy fighting for his shot at Aldo. The 23-year-old was beaten soundly by Dustin Poirier at UFC 125. He's also accustomed to being the underdog. Roop knocked off Internet sensation and T-shirt maven, Chan Sung Jung, "The Korean Zombie" in his last fight.

Matt Mitrione Would Be 'Honored' to Fight Cheick Kongo

Matt Mitrione has been around sports for the better portion of his life so he knows all about paying your dues and respecting veterans.

That's why when pressed on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour about who he wants to fight next, the now 4-0 heavyweight really didn't want to share the opponent he had in mind for fear of disrespecting him.

However, after hearing of the way Brian Stann tactfully expressed a desire to fight Wanderlei Silva following UFC 125, Mitrione finally spilled the beans.

UFC NEWS: "UFC Prelims Live" returns to Spike TV for UFC 126 with Mendes vs. Omigawa, Cerrone vs. Kelly

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_126_poster_180_3.jpg
The UFC may be experimenting with airing preliminary card bouts on Facebook this Saturday, but the organization is going back to the original home of "Prelims Live" for next month's UFC 126 event.

According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the UFC will air two preliminary card fights live on Spike TV for the event, which comes live from Las Vegas on February 5.

It will be the first Prelims Live broadcast of 2011 for Spike TV, which aired ten such specials in 2010. The UFC aired three bouts on Ion Television for this month's UFC 125 when Spike passed on holding that broadcast, but there will be more in 2011.

The two bouts getting the live treatment for this event will feature featherweights Chad Mendes and Michihiro Omigawa, as well as lightweights Donald Cerrone and Paul Kelly.

Mendes and Cerrone are making their UFC debuts in their respective fights, coming over from the WEC in the merger. Mendes is a perfect 9-0 in his professional career, including four victories in the WEC. Cerrone enters the UFC off of two straight wins after a loss to Ben Henderson for the WEC Lightweight Title last April.

Omigawa returns to the UFC for the first time in over three years. The former lightweight found a rebirth of his MMA career as a featherweight in Japan, and will look to take out the undefeated Mendes on this card.

Kelly was initially slated to meet Sam Stout on this card, but an injury to Stout opened the door to Cerrone as a late replacement. Kelly rebounded from a loss to Jacob Volkmann last summer with a victory in his last fight, a second round TKO over T.J. O'Brien at UFC 123.

UFC 126 airs live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center, headlined by a Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.

Penick's Analysis: I'm glad to see the return of Prelims to Spike. There were some good things production-wise about the Ion broadcast, but Spike TV allows the UFC to advertise heavily for their events at all hours, whereas the Ion thing was a one time deal announced a week out. Getting free fights is always a good thing, and these two should be highly entertaining. I'm not surprised to see Cerrone get a spot on television after his last two wins, but it is still slightly surprising that Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto's debut wasn't picked for this broadcast. Mendes-Omigawa is definitely a more meaningful fight in the division, but Dana White is a fan of "Kid's" and I would have thought he'd get a shot on TV. If he can pick up a win he'll likely be on TV the next time out.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Scott Coker says Toronto, Tokyo possible host cities for Heavyweight World Grand Prix events

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_66.png
Strikeforce is set to begin their Heavyweight World Grand Prix next month with their February 12 event from New Jersey, but they have yet to lock down any dates or locations for the remaining two quarterfinal bouts.

According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the organization is looking into international venues as possible hosts for tournament bouts, specifically Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Tokyo, Japan.

"This is a world grand-prix tournament, which means we might not just be in the United States," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "This thing could be traveling."

Strikeforce would likely not make their Toronto debut until after April, as the first major event in the city is set to be the UFC's debut on April 30. But Coker's connection to K-1 and their relationship with DREAM could open up the doors to an event in Japan first. Nothing is set as of yet, and details haven't been worked out, but both cities could be possibly host Strikeforce events in 2011.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I don't think we'll see an international event hit by April, but if Strikeforce is looking to skirt around Josh Barnett's issues with stateside commissions, they might be more inclined to look at Japan as soon as they can. If Strikeforce is going to make it international this year, however, the semifinals would be the most likely time for them to do so, as having the finals in Japan would be a bad move for their fans in the states. There's absolutely nothing definitive in Coker's statements, so nothing is close to being a guarantee, but it would make things interesting if Strikeforce ran an event in Japan.

Dana White on MMA in NY, Sonnen & Barnett, and frogurt - Dana White

The Fight Nerd met UFC President Dana White at their UFC in NY press conference last week, and had a chance to grab a one on one with the man. After a short technical difficulty, White tells us about their plans to get MMA in NY, and also talks about his reaction to Chael Sonnen's current problems, as well as if he thinks Josh Barnett will be licensed to fight in the US due to his trio positive drug tests, which Scott Coker told us he thinks there will be no problems getting things resolved. After fumbling through some questions, I finally pop the big question -- what flavor of frozen yogurt does Dana White like? Why did I ask that, you may ask. Because it was the perfect set-up to my ballsiest move ever -- asking Dana White for a press pass to UFC 128 in Jersey. What does Dana have to say to that? Better check out the video to find out!

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Paul Daley to headline upcoming BAMMA show in the UK; will fight winner of Diaz-Cyborg later in 2011 in Strikeforce

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DaleyPaul_150_17.jpg
British welterweight Paul Daley will be next in line for Strikeforce's Welterweight Title, according to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, but first he'll be taking a fight in his home country.

According to a report from MMAWeekly.com, Daley has been given permission to take a headlining fight on an upcoming show for the British promotion BAMMA. Strikeforce has to give approval on Daley's opponent as well, and that part of the equation has not yet been set. But once that fight's over with, Daley will be in line to fight the winner of this month's Nick Diaz vs. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos bout on Showtime.

"Paul has requested to have a fight in the UK, and our deal with Paul we have to sign off on it, and we have to have an opponent approval," Coker said. "There?s a couple names and we?re going through that process with him. He wants to stay busy and he wants to fight the winner of [Nick] Diaz and Evangelista [Cyborg], and I think that makes a lot of sense."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This makes sense for Daley, as it keeps him busy and allows him to return to Strikeforce for a title fight his next time out. He's really the only true remaining challenger at this point for Diaz in Strikeforce's welterweight division, so if Diaz defeats "Cyborg" on January 29, that's the logical next bout to make. It will make for a good title fight as well, and should be a very entertaining fight between the two when it eventually does happen. For now, British fans get their hometown fighter back for a one off event before he heads back across the pond.

UFC NEWS: Dennis Hallman signed to four-fight contract extension

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_745.jpg
14-year MMA veteran Dennis Hallman had a good year in 2010. He returned to the UFC in December of 2009 after five and a half years in several smaller organizations, but suffered a knockout loss to John Howard in his first fight back.

But in 2010, Hallman picked up two consecutive wins, and has now signed a new four fight contract extension with the organization, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

The 35-year-old Hallman is perhaps best known for a pair of victories over former welterweight king and UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. Prior to his return to the UFC in 2009, Hallman had only appeared four times in the Octagon, defeating Hughes for a second time and losing to Jens Pulver, Frank Trigg and Jorge Rivera in bouts spread over several years.

He is 4-1 over the last two years, and in 2010 he picked up a decision win over Ben Saunders and a knockout win over Karo Parisyan that sent both fighters outside of the UFC.

Hallman is now set to meet 22-year-old T.J. Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 24 in Seattle in March.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Hallman hasn't lost consecutive fights in a decade, and despite 13 losses on his record, he remains a good fighter that is dangerous for any opponent he faces. He's not going to be fighting for a championship anytime soon, but he'll always be competitive, and he'll pick up more wins in the UFC even if he loses a fight here or there. Good for him on the contract extension, and the fight with Waldburger should be an entertaining one for the Seattle crowd, and a hometown fight for Hallman himself considering he lives in Washington state.
