New UFC Champ Ben Henderson was rejected from The Ultimate Fighter's ninth season in 2009

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

HendersonBen_GG180_3.jpg
Every fighter has to start somewhere to make their way to the top. For most, it's a tough and grinding road where continued success in the cage is only the first step towards gaining recognition.

For some others, they get their shot earlier through The Ultimate Fighter, with a chance to make a splash with some exposure. Many don't even make the show, but some of those rejected fighters still work their way onto the big stage.

In one rare case, one of those rejects has found himself all the way at the top.

Newly crowned UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson tried to get his first big break through The Ultimate Fighter's ninth season, and his audition video has been uncovered and is making the rounds. Check it out below:

Video URL: http://youtu.be/_SWVEJ-LqiE

Instead of making it onto the show or even being brought into the UFC, Henderson's shot was in the UFC's sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting. He made his debut in the WEC right around the time TUF 9 began filming, and took the long road to stardom. Still, the long road was well worth it for Henderson, as it has culminated in the UFC Lightweight Championship around his waist, while only TUF 9 winner Ross Pearson remains in the UFC from that season's lightweight cast.

UFC 144 Prelim Results: Riki Fukuda makes successful return, hands Steve Cantwell fifth straight UFC loss

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Riki Fukuda returned to action in Japan on Saturday night for the first time since suffering serious injuries in a car accident in 2011, and he put forth a very impressive effort to take a unanimous decision over Steve Cantwell at UFC 144.

Fukuda's striking was far superior throughout the fight, and as it wore on and Cantwell began tiring, Fukuda turned up the volume of his output and teed off on Cantwell for several minutes. Cantwell covered up and defended as best he could, but he wasn't able to do much of his own throughout the fight.

The third round saw Fukuda turn it up even further and leave no doubt that it was his fight. He mixed up strikes to the body and head, and put forth flurry after flurry on Cantwell against the cage. The win was his first in the UFC after a poor judges decision loss to Nick Ring, while Cantwell's time in the UFC is all but officially over with his fifth straight loss.

Nick Diaz's teammate Jake Shields believes he'll fight again

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DiazNick_GG180_10.jpg
Nick Diaz "retired" in cage in a fit of frustration following UFC 143 after his loss to Carlos Condit, but it wasn't a retirement many expect to stick. That holds true for at least one of his teammates, Jake Shields, who said this week he expects his friend and teammate to be back at some point in the future.

In a short video interview with Kimura.se ahead of his UFC 144 bout with Yoshihiro Akiyama in Japan, Shields explained why he expects Diaz to return to the cage.

"He's calmed down," Shields said. "I think he's gonna fight again. I think it's just... he's been a little burned out. They've been fighting him like crazy, keeping him busy. I think he just needs a little break. Unfortunately, he'll probably be suspended for a little while, but the time off will make him love the sport again and make him wanna get back in there."

For now, Diaz won't be making any plans until his disciplinary hearing with the NSAC for a failed drug test out of UFC 143, but fans will return to this conversation depending on how that hearing goes.

Penick's Analysis: The time off for Diaz is the key. Despite his protestations, Diaz is a competitor, and eventually he'll want to compete again. He sees fighting as a "fight" and not as a sporting competition, but it's something he's good at and that he'll eventually want to do again. He won't stay on the sidelines forever, and even if he's suspended for a year, I'd expect him to be back shortly after that expires.

Sudden death round on tap for UFC’s flyweight tournament

Next week, the UFC will kick off start their flyweight division with a four-man tournament to crown the division's champion. At UFC on FX 2, Joe Benavidez will fight Yasuhiro Urushutani and Demetrious Johnson will face Ian McCall. The winners of those two bouts will meet at a later date to decide the UFC's first 125-lb. champ.

If either of the three-round bouts happen to end in a draw, MMA fans in Australia and those watching on FX will get a bonus: A sudden death round. Johnson talked about the possibility of an extra round to Tapout Radio (transcribed by Five Ounces):

"I don't know if anybody has said anything about it, and this is the first time I'm mentioning it, is that we (McCall and myself) had to sign for a 'sudden death' bout," Johnson said. "If it goes to three rounds, and the judges can't decide who the winner is, then we'll do a fourth round."

Though the likelihood of a draw is small, it does bring the possibility of one of the most exciting circumstances in sports to MMA. Sudden death is thrilling whether it's 10-year-olds playing basketball at the park district or professional football players deciding who is going to the Super Bowl.

The flyweights will already bring a pace that UFC fans have not yet seen in the Octagon, but also the possibility of sudden death.

Jon Jones confirms that Greg Jackson will corner him against Rashad Evans at UFC 145

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JonesJones_180_22.jpg
When Jon Jones captured the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship last year, trainer Greg Jackson said he would not corner the 24-year-old in a potential bout with then-teammate Rashad Evans. However, Evans split from the camp following Jones' title win, and after a year away and no intention of coming back, Jackson has decided it is in his best interest to corner Jones afterall.

The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion revealed on Saturday that Jackson has told him he will be in his corner at UFC 145 for the fight. Jackson's hardline stance against it had wavered recently, and he will now help Jones prepare for a fighter he's very familiar with.

Jackson has been very vocal in not wanting to see teammates fight, and indeed in another fight coming later this year in Carlos Condit vs. Georges St-Pierre he's said he'll stay on the sidelines. His main focus when cornering a fighter is to strategize for a specific opponent, and work individually with that fighter on things that need to be done to implement a certain gameplan.

Because of the relationship Jackson had with both Jones and Evans he didn't want to help one side over the other, but with Evans splitting from the camp and having less than kind things to say about them overall in the last year, Jackson has decided it's in his best interest to help Jones. Whether that leads to a bigger advantage for Jones or not remains to be seen, but it's certainly another added wrinkle to the split between the two sides, and the heated rivalry that will play out on April 21.

Penick's Analysis: I think a lot of people believed this would end up being the case. As Jones and Evans are no longer being teammates, and with Evans having no desire to return to Jackson's, the issues Jackson had with the situation aren't as prevalent. Evans already believes Jackson sided with Jones over him, and with Jones still working there it's better for him to help a fighter that's still with him over someone that won't be coming back. Now, for all that Evans knows about Jones, Jackson's got plenty of knowledge about what Evans brings to the table as well, and that could be another advantage for Jones over Evans. Will it be a fight-changing advantage? Perhaps, but even if it's not it is something more that Evans has to concern himself with.

The UFC to take on the Olympics in August

On Tuesday night, the UFC announced on Fuel TV that fights will return to Atlantic City for an FX show on June 22 and to Fox on Aug. 4 in Los Angeles. The date of the Fox show will pit the UFC directly against the Summer Olympics.

The UFC hasn't shied away from the Olympics in the past. UFC 110, which featured Cain Velasquez taking out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round, aired against the 2010 Winter Olympics. Georges St. Pierre defended his belt against Jon Fitch at UFC 87 on the second night of the 2008 Summer Games.

[Related: Jon Fitch vs. Josh Koscheck fight could happen]

But there are two big differences here. First of all, this is network television vs. network television. The previous UFC events that took on the Olympics were pay-per-views, which generally attract a more hard-core fan base. With network television, the UFC is seeking casual fans. During the Olympics, casual sports fans tune into the Games.

Secondly, the UFC's other Olympic-conflicted events fell on nights with with light schedules at the Games. Aug. 4 will be jam-packed with sports popular in the U.S. Swimming will award medals in four races. Basketball and beach volleyball will play early-round games. In track and field, the men's long jump and women's heptathlon and 100-meter events will conclude. The gold- and bronze-medal tennis matches will take place at Wimbledon.

Who will win the ratings battle? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Anderson Silva goes 1-2 with Amazonian tribesman

Above, you can see longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a clinch with the member of an indigenous tribe in Brazil. According to the good people at Sherdog, he was taping a television show while visiting the Kamayura people in an inland state of Brazil.

While there, he worked out with a tribe member in their traditional combat sport of the huka-huka. He was beat twice under their rules, but then won when allowed to use jiu-jitsu.

Silva used the filming as a learning experience.

"It's different, the way they fight, the kind of technique they use," enthused Silva. "They are very strong, and I really enjoyed the experience. Really cool."

At 36 years old, Silva is still going out and learning new techniques and ways to dominate at MMA. He does not stop getting better as a fighter, even when he's at the top of his game. Hopefully, he'll continue to travel the world to learn every martial art and we'll see him try Senegalese grappling, Turkish oil wrestling, and Black Friday shopping in any mall in suburban America.

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. After getting beaten up for 4,000 hours, UFC on FX 2's Court McGee coming into his own

Growing up in Utah, Court McGee's biggest dream was to be a Division I All-American on the wrestling mats.

Instead, life took a different turn.

McGee's journey into and out of drug addiction is well known by this point, but his path to success in MMA isn't as much. It was a years-long grind of small competitions to get to the big one.

Anderson Silva talks to Cagewriter about UFC Undisputed 3 and the trouble brewing for Chael Sonnen

Anderson Silva is back in real life and in video game form. The UFC's middleweight champ is heavily featured in the ad campaign for UFC Undisputed 3. The THQ game just hit the shelves across the United States yesterday. It coincides with Silva's return to light training in anticipation of a June return to the Octagon.

Silva and his manager Ed Soares didn't pull any punches in talking about Chael Sonnen's verbal reign of terror with the Brazilian sidelined by a shoulder injury.

"He didn't have to do any surgery. The doctor said he could strengthen it with physical therapy and that's what he's been doing for a good four months now," Soares told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM.

Silva's not one to fire back aggressively, but he sounded pretty serious when talking about whether Sonnen's crossed the line over the last six months.

"Yeah of course, Chael talks too much. He talked about my family. He's got no respect for my wife. No respect for the people in Brazil. It's a problem," Silva said. "I understand it's a promotion, but this is no promotion. This is bad. I don't like this. The people in Brazil don't like this. It's bad for the sport."

Soares brought it a little stronger.

"He can say whatever he wants to say, but he has to be prepared to face everything that he's saying when he steps inside the ring in June. I think Chael is going to experience something he's never experienced before," Soares said. "[...] He's going to feel such an intense pressure walking into that stadium with probably 55,000 fans ... he's going to feel that."

The UFC is targeting June in Sao Paolo for the matchup of the year.

If you can't wait to see the fight, give UFC Undisputed 3 a try. The attention to detail is amazing. Silva said he alone worked with the game makers over three days so they could nail his character.

Silva joked that he's played the game, but the top video game fighting Silvas are his sons.

"I don't play too much, my sons play more. I have no chance against them. Sometimes I play [against my] sons. My sons win and tell me 'hey Dad give me the money. Go back to real fighting. This is no good for you."

The Silva boys like to use their father in the game along with the Nogueira brothers, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans.

UFC 144's "Rampage" Jackson goes after Joe Rogan - "I just want to tell him to shut the **** up sometimes"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JacksonRampage_150_13.jpg
Joe Rogan has been the UFC's color commentator for years, and for most fans and fighters he's been considered one of the best in the business. However, for at least one former Champion and star, Rogan is far from the pinnacle of MMA broadcasting.

UFC 144's Quinton "Rampage" Jackson did an interview with Fighter's Only ahead of his bout with Ryan Bader in Japan this week, and he didn't hold back his thoughts on Rogan and his commentary.

"You know he's got good jiu-jitsu because he's so biased against jiu-jitsu guys," Jackson said of Rogan (transcribed by BJPenn.com. "You can hear it in his voice. Whenever a guy is a jiu-jitsu fighter he's playing rusty trombone. I don't think you should talk down, you should be neutral."

"When I used to fight in PRIDE, watch Bas Rutten and Stephen Quadros on commentary. Those guys were my good friends and you couldn't even tell when they were doing commentary. We hung out outside of work sometimes, we were good friends but when I fought they weren't biased towards me. They did their job. They weren't biased towards skills or anything like that. That's the way it should be. Sometimes you can hear him because Joe Rogan has one of those girly high-ass voices. I just wanna tell him to shut the f*** up sometimes."

Penick's Analysis: Rogan can be seemingly biased at times, and definitely does put emphasis on certain things over others in an occasionally noticeable way, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily intentional. Still, it's clear Jackson's not a fan. He's never one to stay quiet about how he feels, though, so if he's had these thoughts for awhile it was only a matter of time before they spilled out in an interview. Now it'll be interesting to see if there's any tension with Rogan this weekend in Japan.

With AKA split, Jon Fitch vs. Josh Koscheck could happen says Dana White

Dana White has said it for years, the fight game isn't a place for team camaraderie in the long run, The fight game will eventually will split up even the best of friends.

The heat between former teammates Jon Jones and Rashad Evans has been palpable for over a year and now we could see two guys, who appeared to be even closer, fighting in the future.

Josh Koscheck is done with American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. That could mean the roadblocks are gone for a Koscheck match against Jon Fitch.

As teammates they said they'd never fight each other unless it was for a title. That always drove their boss nuts. Now that Koscheck is on his own, would they pass up a chance for a title shot if it meant they had to fight?

Koscheck gave a cryptic answer when conversing with White during the UFC 143 postfight press conference.

"That's what I whispered to him," White told the media. "I said, 'Now I'm doing the Jon Fitch fight.' He said, 'Good luck with that.'"

Koscheck gave no details as to why he split from the camp. He first indicated things were on shaky ground during the week when he said he was fighting for "Team Me" not "Team AKA."

He confirmed things during the postfight.

"I'll be training out of Fresno for now. I'm no longer affiliated with some of the people at the gym that I've been training at. I'm going to do my own thing," said Koscheck.

What happened at AKA? Koscheck wouldn't even mention the gym by name.

Koscheck barely squeaked by Mike Pierce and admitted his motivation to fight was less than stellar. Between the drama of leaving his longtime team and Pierce not being a huge name, the veteran UFC star produced a lackluster performance.

"Josh looked flat tonight. I expected Josh to have the faster hands. He didn't really let his hands go tonight," White said. "He looked flat."

Maybe a Fitch fight, with the winner getting a title shot, is exactly the energy Koscheck needs. For now White said he's not planning on Fitch-Koscheck, but he's open to it.

"No. I'm just [expletive] with him. If the fight made sense ... because there was a time when those two were [at the top of the rankings] ... but if the fight made sense, yeah, I'd try to make it. I wouldn't do it just to do it," said White.

Fitch needs to get back in there as soon as possible. Knocking on the door for a second title shot for the last three years, Fitch's chances got crushed when he was knocked out in just 12 seconds at UFC 141 against Johny Hendricks. In the USA Today/Bloody Elbow 170-pound rankings, he dropped all the way down to No. 7.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Will the UK ever produce a UFC Champion?

The following piece was submitted by MMATorch reader Dan Moore:

BispingMichael_180_15.jpg
Back in March 2010, Dan Hardy fought Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Title at UFC 111. It might not have been wholly deserved, and yes, he was extremely fortunate to be in that spot, but the fact Hardy got a title shot was meant to be the beginning of a new era for UK born fighters in the UFC. Surely it would only be a matter of time before another British fighter got a shot, right? Wrong. Since that one sided defeat in Newark, New Jersey, only Michael Bisping has come remotely close; and the rest? Most have taken backward steps and are so far away from a title shot, it's not even funny (Not for me anyway!).

So which fighters are currently close, which ones have the potential, and who is more likely to be voted in as the next UK Prime Minister before they ever get a title fight?

CLOSE

Michael Bisping: I might as well start with the main man himself. Every man and his dog knows by now that Bisping lost by unanimous decision to Chael Sonnen at the UFC on FOX 2 event last month. If I am being completely honest, I never expected him to win the fight, however, plenty of positives came out of it. Firstly, only 49,999,950 fans in the USA hate him now, the other 50 have changed their opinion for the better. Secondly, he proved that he's actually a very accomplished Mixed Martial Artist who can more than hold his own in elite competition. Beating the likes of Jorge Rivera and Jason Miller won't get you a title shot, and in many ways, 2011 was a wasted year. However, it proved he was a valuable company guy, and Dana White should repay that loyalty by giving Bisping another number one contender fight. Mark Munoz in June or July would be a good option, winner fights Sonnen or Silva this Autumn (Fall), in Manchester, England.

POTENTIAL

John Hathaway: Anyone who beats Diego Sanchez must have potential right? I know many of you will say Sanchez wasn't motivated or in great shape, and you are probably right, but it's still a W for the Hathaway resume. Throw in wins over Paul Taylor and Rick Story, and that's an impressive hat trick of victories. I was one of the 18,000 fans at the o2 Arena in London for UFC 120 who thought Hathaway would convincingly beat the always tough Mike Pyle. How wrong we were. A closely fought win over Kris McCray got him right back on track and his fight with Pascal Krauss at UFC 138 is back on and set for UFC on FOX 3 in May. Hopefully another win, followed by another step up in competition, and just maybe, at only 24 years old, the Brighton born Hathaway will fight for a world title in the not too distant future.

Brad Pickett: I know he lost to Renan Barao at UFC 138, but everyone who fights Renan Barao right now loses, so it isn't the end of the world for One Punch. Fortunately for him, the route to Dominic Cruz isn't as long and demanding as it would be in other weight classes. Demacio Page is up next for Pickett, a tough fight, but ultimately one he will be odds on to win. After that who knows, but with the addition of a flyweight division, the competition is certainly spread thin. Faber can only get so many title shots before the UFC give up on him. Barao is rightly next, after that, the road to Cruz will be relatively clear after a win or two.

A MILLION MILES AWAY

Dan Hardy: Yes Hardy loves to brawl. Yes, he's got charisma and a good look, but will he ever get himself on par with the likes of GSP, Condit, Diaz, Ellenberger et al? No. It isn't just the fact he can't wrestle, it's also his determination to fight every fight his way, whoever the opposition. Granted, it's commendable, and always fun to watch, but Carlos Condit proved last Saturday, the tactical approach can lead to big rewards. Condit traded with Hardy at UFC 120 because he knew he was the better striker, against Diaz he went for a vastly different approach, because Greg Jackson knew he'd probably lose a shoot out, and it paid off. I hope Hardy gets back in the Octagon very soon. In terms of an opponent, i'd match him with Dong Hyun-Kim, but if Joe Silva is in a charitable mood, a better option would be Chris Cope.

Everyone Else: This is not meant as a derogative choice, it's simply a fact and a reality right now. No other UK fighter in the UFC is even remotely close to a title shot right now. Some are only just getting their opportunity and just starting out in the UFC (Che Mills, John Maguire, Paul Sass, Phil De Fries), others have not fulfilled their potential yet (Terry Etim, Jason Young), and some will be used to simply fill out the undercard on every UK based event (Paul Taylor, Rob Broughton, James Wilks).

If things get really desperate, though, we've still got Alistair Overeem. He was born in Hounslow, London, and that folks, is good enough for me if he beats Junior dos Santos later this year.

Dana White: Dan Henderson doesn't want to fight Lyoto Machida, doesn't want to wait for title shot [UPDATE]

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

HendersonDam_180_10.jpg
Dan Henderson entered 2012 eying a potential title shot in one of two divisions, but with nothing falling in place for him in order for that to happen, he's left with little options at the moment.

UFC President Dana White said on Wednesday that Henderson may have been lined up for a Middleweight Title shot against Anderson Silva had Chael Sonnen lost to Michael Bisping, and would have gotten a shot at the Light Heavyweight Title against Jon Jones had Rashad Evans lost to Phil Davis. With neither of those happening, Henderson was presented with a bout against Lyoto Machida, but that's not happening, either.

"He doesn't want to fight Machida," White said (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). "He doesn't want to wait [either]. He's going to have to wait. Who does he want to fight? I mean, I don't know what to do with Dan."

"Dan's either going to have to wait for Jones and Evans or wait for Silva - or fight somebody else. It's pretty simple."

Henderson had said recently that he wanted to fight again instead of waiting for the winner of Jones-Evans, but he himself wasn't sure what options there were or what fights would make sense. For now, there's simply nothing set on that front, and he'll be on the sidelines until further notice.

Penick's Analysis: I continue to think a fight between Henderson and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson would make the most sense if "Rampage" defeats Ryan Bader later this month at UFC 144. It would be a rematch of an epic fight for the title that Henderson actually lost, and a win would further cement his status as a deserving title challenger. If he wants to fight before a guaranteed title shot, that's the only fight that really makes sense for him, otherwise he'd be much better off waiting to fight the winner of Jones-Evans by the end of the summer or early fall.

UPDATE: Henderson refuted White's comments on Twitter this morning, saying he hadn't turned down a fight with Machida because it hadn't even been offered. Here's the comment:

"Was never offered Machida. And even though he has lost 3 out of his last 4, I'm sure it would be entertaining."
