Lanny Poffo Wants Greg Valentine In An MMA Fight

WWE Hall of Famer Greg “The Hammer” Valentine no-showing Great North Wrestling’s Randy Savage tribute show on Sept. 3 in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada has been turned into an angle.
Lanny Poffo, the brother of the late superstar wrestler, posted a video on YouTube challenged the 60-year-old to a mixed martial arts match on December 30 in Gatineau. The wrestler formerly known as The Genius says he will throw cash he received from his recent inheritance to bait Valentine into the fight. He also taunts Valentine by calling him a “mangina” and ...

Jon Jones hits the big time with Bentley purchase

The UFC works in mysterious ways. To the uninitiated it appears that the UFC's top stars make lousy money in comparison to boxers and other high-level athletes. But then there's that tricky discretionary pay that's kept private.

At UFC 128, UFC light heavyweight champ made $140,000 ($70,000 to show, $70,000 to win). Above, Jon Jones shows off his new $190,000 2012 Bentley Continental GT. Someone's paying him.

It'd be interesting to see if the boxing vs. MMA pay argument would go away with full disclosure of what the UFC pays its fighters.

Either way, good for Jones. The kid's worked hard. He's the rage of the sport. He should buy anything he wants.

Georges St-Pierre believes he'll finish Carlos Condit at UFC 137

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_TB150_1.jpg
With the UFC giving fans a short two-week respite from major events after a string of four straight Saturday cards, anticipation is beginning to rebuild for this month's UFC 137 event, headlined by Georges St-Pierre's title defense against Carlos Condit.

In a new pre-fight interview for UFC.com, St-Pierre discussed the fight with Condit and what he feels about the matchup.

"In the rankings, I do believe Carlos Condit was the number one contender," St-Pierre said. "In the eyes of everyone in the UFC Carlos Condit deserved the shot. I believe Carlos [poses] no problem to me that I haven't seen."

The longtime Welterweight Champion is out to defend his belt for the seventh straight time in the fight, but while he has supreme confidence in himself, he respects what Condit brings into the cage.

"I'm going to have to deal with a guy who has knockout power, very technical striker and a great ground game as well," he said. "Unpredictable fighter. I've seen a lot of improvement in Carlos' game but I believe I'm a more improved fighter than he is. I have a game plan to take care of Carlos and I will execute it."

The two have some training ties to one another, both working with Greg Jackson at times in their recent careers, but they're not full on training partners, and St-Pierre says there's not a friendship there to strain in this bout. It's all about business on Oct. 29.

"He's not my friend and I don't put any emotion in but I do believe I will have the key to victory. I do believe I will be able to knock him out or submit him. I will remain the Welterweight Champion."

Penick's Analysis: I'm honestly as excited for this match-up now as I was initially for St-Pierre vs. Diaz. Condit provides a great challenge to St-Pierre both on the ground and on the feet, and though his wrestling is a weak point and St-Pierre can put him on his back, Condit's sweeps are fantastic and he's dangerous on the ground himself. Much like I felt would be the case with Diaz, this is the type of fight where St-Pierre is going to be tested in all areas, and won't be able to utilize one dominant skill set to control the fight, and I think that's when he fights at his best. I'm hoping Condit can bring out the best in the champion, and if he does that could very well mean St-Pierre's first stoppage win since January of 2009.

Bellator CEO Rebney talks his fighters, Spike and the Olympics

Bellator CEO Rebney talks his fighters, Spike and the OlympicsAs Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney looks at what has happened in the fifth season, he can't help but still be amazed at how well his fighters perform week in and week out. He talked to Cagewriter about some of his favorite moments of the season and Bellator's future.

"The thing that's made me happy is the level of fights. From event no. 3 on, they've just been great. Dantas' flying knee, Alexis [Vila], the way that he knocked out Joe Warren was crazy, Brian Rogers, and saying to me in the incredibly articulate way he speaks as a teacher, 'I'm going to bring it.' And then he did. Shlemenko pulling of a submission victory, there's all these things that have been jumping out at me. There's just been moment after moment," Rebney said.

One of the fights that he is most looking forward to is the Nov. 19 title fight between champ Eddie Alvarez and tournament champ Michael Chandler. He says that no one should count out Chandler.

"Nobody is talking about Chandler in the upper echelon of the division. I'll be honest with you. I don't know if I can count on one hand the guys who can beat him."

That fight will air on MTV2, but with the UFC ending their relationship with Spike TV, there's a chance that Bellator could switch to the station that is aimed towards young men. Bellator's preliminary fights air on Spike's website, and Bellator's deal is with MTV's parent company.

"We're a great position in that our deal is with MTV networks, so it's that larger corporate umbrella. They control Spike, MTV, MTV2. You never know what the future will bring. The foreseeable future will be what it is, which is MTV2 and Spike.com for the prelims, but Spike is better than anyone in this space. They get it better than anyone."

Rebney is also excited about some of the challenges coming up for his fighters, both in and out of Bellator. He said that they are working on a match-up between DREAM fighter Shinya Aoki and Alvarez, but that it will likely happen in February, after Aoki fights in DREAM's New Year's Eve show.

Warren is working on returning to his wrestling roots and will try to make the 2012 Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic team. Rebney supports the world champion wrestler in trying to go for the gold.

"It's a great platform for Warren. If he can be our champion at 145, and then go and make the U.S. Olympic team, what a great thing for Bellator and for MMA."

Clay Guida hoping for the best version of Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox 1

With Melvin Guillard suffering a setback loss to Joe Lauzon last weekend and Gilbert Melendez being kept in Strikeforce for one more fight with Jorge Masvidal, the next contender for the UFC Lightweight Title is likely to be determined with the UFC on Fox 1 bout between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson. In an interview with Mike Straka, Guida said he's hoping to meet the very best Ben Henderson in the cage in that bout:

"We always rise to the top for the toughest occasions. This is going to be my most important fight, my toughest fight. I know Ben is going to be on his top conditioning and his best camp, so that's all we're looking for... We want to fight the best conditioned, best camp he's had and that's going to tell the tale of maybe who's next in line."

UFC 136 postfight: ?Rocky? references, baseball bats and the People?s champ

UFC 136 postfight: ?Rocky? references, baseball bats and the People?s champ

HOUSTON - In the end, the main card at UFC 136 delivered because Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard produced another classic in their third meeting in front of 16,164.

The live gate was $2.23 million. The UFC now holds the marks for the No. 1 and No. 4 all-time gates at the Toyota Center.

The effort in that main event got the UFC's lightweight champ the Knockout of the Night bonus, good for $75,000. Joe Lauzon beat out Chael Sonnen for Submission of the Night, while Fight of the Night went to Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia for their rock'em, sock'em brawl.

- Sonnen certainly deserved the Postfight Interview of the Night bonus. He called out Anderson Silva and asked to fight on the UFC's Super Saturday card in early February of 2012 in Las Vegas. Sonnen said the speech in the Octagon was off the cuff and he got fired up when he saw Silva sitting in the crowd. Dialing up more of the wrestling rhetoric, Sonnen said he was the people's champion and he was willing to give Silva a shot at the linear belt, his belt.

- White said he was highly impressed by Sonnen's victory over Stann. He believes in the theory of ring rust, but Sonnen showed no signs that he'd been away from the Octagon for 14 months.

- White said he wants to make the Silva-Sonnen fight as soon as possible. He wouldn't confirm that the fight would be on Super Bowl weekend, but he did say Brazil was almost an impossibility.

- Both Joe Lauzon and Dana White agreed on Melvin Guillard's performance saying he came into the fight with a lack of focus. Lauzon pointed out that while he sat in his hotel room all day on Saturday, Guillard was hanging out the UFC Fan Expo going down next door at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

- A very disappointed Kenny Florian wouldn't address retirement rumors. He was asked five questions and had little to say.

- Maynard still appeared stunned during the postfight. He couldn't believe Edgar made it through the first round.

"I don' know if he has a button that puts him out. I hit him on a knee, a right ... I think I hit him on a hook. What else? If there was a bat in there I probably would've hit him with that too. I couldn't find one. Where do you keep the bats in the cage?" Maynard jokingly asked White.

- White said he lost his mind cage side when Edgar pulled off the victory. Some may say his mind was still lost when he made an impassioned plea that Edgar is now the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world during the postfight. White said he always thought the stuff you see in "Rocky" movies was [expletive], but Edgar produced a real-life Rocky fight.

J-Lau and White don?t shy away from saying Guillard looked past UFC 136

First, Melvin Guillard took it on the chin in the Octagon then came a few more shots during the UFC 136 postfight press conference.

Guillard was the victim of a major upset (closed as a minus-600 favorite at some off-shore sports books) against Joe Lauzon, then during the postfight, the victor and Dana White said they thought the former title contender was too cocky for his own good.

"He came dancing in there like he'd won, like he'd just won the fight ... instead of being serious," White said (0:45 mark). "It'd be one thing if it went to the ground and Lauzon submitted him, but he rocked him twice and then submitted him."

Guillard came out swinging for the fences from the get-go. He got crushed by a left hook and down he went. It was all over in 47 seconds for Guillard. This after he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune he was expecting to knockout Lauzon.

"I never predict the round, but I know I will get a knockout," Guillard said before the fight. "It's no pressure, but I want to outperform everyone on the card. I can't wait. And I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about what I'm going to do."

He also called Lauzon a featherweight.

Lauzon said he was irked to find out that Guillard had spent part of Saturday afternoon hanging around the UFC Fan Expo at the George R. Brown Convention Center. That's not unusual for Guillard though on fight days. He told us in the past that he doesn't like to sit in his hotel room on the Friday and Saturday of fight weekends. Getting out and talking to the fans actually relaxes his nerves.

Later during the postfight proceedings, White mentioned Guillard again. When referencing his own focus on the huge Fox televison debut on Nov. 12, White said he didn't want to pull "a Guillard" and lose track of his goal. That stings.

Guillard made it back from the brink of lot worse. Now the 28-year-old has to regroup and try to tear through the division again.

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar was understandably excited when he TKOed Gray Maynard to defend the UFC lightweight belt. To celebrate, the 5-foot-6 fighter jumped onto the six-foot fence of the Octagon, grabbed a camera and gave it a big kiss. As his face had been bloodied early when Maynard had Edgar on his heels in the first round, Edgar left a bloody mess behind him.

MMA has its own charms that makes it different from any other sport. One of them is that its fans can see the beauty behind blood drops on a camera.

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

HOUSTON - Mike Massenzio is a wrestler by trade, but when his takedown game didn't produce results the New Jersey-native made it into a street fight. Massenzio consistently landed uppercuts and straight lefts to brutalize Steve Cantwell on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the first fight at UFC 136.

Massenzio (12-5, 2-3 UFC) has been a loyal soldier for the UFC. He was called in on short notice for his last fight against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 131. Massenzio was out of his league at light heavyweight. Tonight, at his more natural 185 pounds, he was the better conditioned and tougher fighter.

Cantwell's stand up is very good and he looked to be on his way to a victory at the end of the first round. Massenzio was getting caught by body shots and backing up. In the second, everything changed. Massenzio worked consistently for the takedown. None of them worked, but it wore down Cantwell.

In the final seven minutes of the fight, Cantwell had his nose broken and started dropping his hands.

Simpson dominates Schafer on the way to his sixth UFC victory

Aaron Simpson doesn't have to fight, he simply loves doing so. It doesn't hurt that the 37-year-old, is still a physical specimen. Eric Schafer simply couldn't keep pace with Simpson tonight. The former Arizona State wrestling star stood with Schafer for 15 minutes and tore him up to score a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all cards, at the Toyota Center.

Simpson (11-2, 6-2 UFC) has a decorated amateur wrestling background, but his hands have improved vastly. Schafer's big strength is his submission game, so Simpson decided to slug it out. It worked. He had Schafer rocked on several occasions and dropped him in the final 15 seconds of the second round.

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

Elkins thwarts Zhang guillotine attempts to pick up easy win

Tiequan Zhang's guillotine is dangerous, but tonight it was the only thing he tried. Darren Elkins survived a submission attempt at the start of each round, gained top control and dominated his opponent on the ground for a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

Zhang, the only high level Chinese fighter working under the Zuffa banner, now has a 2-2 record with the company. The UFC is looking to break new ground in China and would love to market some Chinese fighters. It's probably safe to assume there will be dozens of Chinese fighters in the near future, but right now Zhang (15-2, 1-1 UFC) doesn't look like the guy to carry the banner.

Elkins (13-2, 3-1 UFC) fought twice for the UFC at lightweight. After a loss to Charles Oliveira, he dropped to 145, where he's now 2-0.

Miocic outlasts Beltran to get first UFC victory

Joey Beltran is no easy mark so Stipe Miocic knew it was going to be a grind to get a victory in his first UFC fight. Miocic landed some bombs and scored five easy takedowns on the way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the final fight of the UFC 136 undercard on Facebook.

Bellator Bantamweight Champ Zack Makovsky Just Wants to Have Fun

Zack MakovskyZack Makovsky's nickname seems to apply to more than just his size.

Makovsky's "Fun Size" nickname is mostly a playful jab at his physical stature. But the Bellator bantamweight champion is making the size of the fun he has carry over elsewhere, too.

Makovsky said spending his time just trying to improve as a fighter and compete to the highest of his ability is what keeps mixed martial arts fun for him.

"I think I definitely am understanding how to compete in MMA more," Makovsky told host Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of "The MMA Hour." "I really think I'm trying to put everything together. My mentality is probably the biggest part of it. I revamped my whole mentality, especially from when I was (wrestling) in college. I try not to care if I win or lose. I just try to have fun with it and do the best I can."

So far, that philosophy has translated quite well for Makovsky (13-2, 5-0 Bellator). On Saturday, at Bellator 54, Makovsky has what amounts to a stay-busy fight against Ryan Roberts. His 135-pound title will not be on the line. He won't put his belt up for grabs until next year, when he fights the winner of the ongoing Bellator bantamweight tournament.

Makovsky said he likes Bellator's tournament format - after all, winning the inaugural bantamweight tourney is what put him on the major MMA map. But at the same time, he said it has some drawbacks.

"Going into the tournament, I was unknown to the majority of the MMA community," Makovsky said. "I like that about Bellator - it's a tournament and you control where you go yourself. I like how they let you get there on your own.

"(But) there's a downside as far as once I won the tournament, I've had a lot of downtime. I fought six times in 2010, and I'll only fight twice in 2011 with no title fights. There's ups and downs."

Makovsky even joked that because of the downtime this calendar year, he may have been better off not winning the first bantamweight tournament - just making the finals. That way, he could compete in this year's bantamweight tourney and make more money.

Still, the product of the Fight Factory, in Philadelphia, where he trains alongside Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, said winning the $100,000 tournament a year ago put him in the position, financially, where he can just concentrate on becoming a better fighter. He no longer has to pay the bills by being an assistant wrestling coach at Drexel University, where he competed collegiately.

"I wasn't making a living (fighting) by any means until I got into Bellator," Makovsky said. "My first fight, I fought for $300 to show and $200 to win. I saved a little bit from winning the tournament, but it's definitely different (not having a job). I'm very happy doing what I love for a living. I get to sleep in when I want and set my training schedule - so I'm living the dream."

Though he's on a seven-fight winning streak and holds a title for one of the most prominent MMA promotions in the world, Makovsky said he's not prepared to say he's a Top 10 bantamweight in the world. Not that he isn't confident in his skills, but it's just not his style.

"I think my skills are up there with those guys, (but) I don't like to say where I should be ranked," Makovsky said. "That's up to the media. I want to continue to grow and be the best I can be, and something like that would put extra pressure on myself. That's not where I'll have the most success. I'll have the most success when I'm focusing on me and getting better. Everything else will take care of itself."

Including, he hopes, the fun.

UFC 140's Jon Jones knows the only way to Rashad Evans is through Lyoto Machida

Rashad Evans is still hanging over Jon Jones' head.

Today during a press conference in support of UFC 140, Jones' eyes widened at UFC president Dana White's mention of Evans and a recent proclamation of having the champ's number.

But it's Lyoto Machida who is next, and Jones said it would be unwise to take his eye off the immediate task ahead.

Let It Go: Frankie Edgar Doesn?t Need to Fight at Featherweight

I sincerely hope that Frankie Edgar has done enough to convince you that he?s one of the best lightweight fighters in UFC history. One would think that he?s proven this already. If you ask any fan who the best fighter ever to compete at 155 pounds is, they?ll probably tell you B.J. Penn. Of course, [...]

Spike TV hires VP of sports and multi-platform programming; touts "extensive" plans for live MMA content

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SpikeLogo_150.jpg
The UFC is moving away from Spike TV at the conclusion of this year, though they will have some presence on their longtime cable partner throughout 2012. With their only live sporting programming on its way out, Spike is taking steps to replace that lost content with the creation of a new position in the company of senior vice president, sports and multi-platform programming.

Spike TV announced on Tuesday that they have hired Jon Slusser for that position, and according to the press release, Slusser "will be charged with creating live, multi-platform, socially driven events with convergent opportunities for Spike TV?s expanding male audience." Additionally, "his focus will be on identifying sports and events that are a strategic fit for the brand."

Spike plans on continuing to be a home of live mixed martial arts events, and the press release states that their "extensive" plans for airing that content will be announced in the near future. It's seen as an inevitability that Bellator Fighting Championships will be moved to the network, though the terms of their deal to air UFC content through next year will not allow them to air other live MMA events yet.

Along with live sports programming, Spike hopes to add more "non-traditional" live content, such as their live coverage of E3 and ComiCon from this year. Slusser previously "served as senior vice president of Spike Digital Entertainment, a group which he helped create that includes Spike.com, GameTrailers.com, UltimateFighter.com and GameTrailers TV ? a weekly TV show on Spike TV where he also served as executive producer."

"Spike is committed to creating distinctive live programming that delivers viewers on a multitude of platforms including television, online, mobile, social networks, and tablets,? said Spike TV President Kevin Kay. ?We believe Jon's entrepreneurial spirit and forward thinking leadership in multi platform programming makes him the perfect guy to identify and build emerging franchises for us.

Penick's Analysis: This is what Spike needs to do in order to move forward as a network beyond the UFC. They can in some respects reinvent themselves as a home for more live content than they have currently, and once the deal with the UFC is completed they can also begin airing other MMA content such as Bellator. Slusser moving into this newly created position should hopefully bring about some good things for Spike as a network with the UFC no longer calling it their home.

Bellator officials today announced additions to the card.

Bellator 55 takes Oct. 22 at Cocopah Resort and Casino in Yuma, Ariz. The main card airs on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX), and Spike.com streams the preliminary card.
