Now Kimbo Slice wants to box an NFL player?

Kimbo Slice's rise from underground street fighter to network TV star was simply amazing. His fall hasn't possessed the charm, but it seems to have happened just as quickly.

After losing in the first round of the UFC's "Ultimate Fighter" and going 1-1 with the promotion, the man has simply fallen off the face of the earth.

Now we're confused about what he wants to do. Does he ever want to fight again? He's been mum on the topic. His original MMA promoters, The Shaws, continue to push for him to get back in the ring, but we wonder if the latest effort is only making Kimbo look foolish.

Jared Shaw is proposing a ridiculous boxing debut for the former streetfighting king. Shawtold MMAWeekly Radio:

"I'll tell you right now on the air, I've called Mike Riley to get in touch with Ray Edwards' people and I've made an open challenge to come fight Kimbo Slice. That fight I will deliver.

"If Ray Edwards wants to step up and fight Kimbo Slice I will deliver that to the public. There's two guys that come from athletic backgrounds, that haven't been in the ring that many times, so let's see two big boys bang it out. If Ray Edwards thinks he's a great boxer, then maybe he thinks he can go through Kevin Ferguson very quickly."

Edwards is a defensive end with the Minnesota Vikings. Much like Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, Edwards decided to make a little money during the NFL lockout by stepping into the squared circle. He hasn't made his boxing debut yet, but Shaw is calling him out, saying:

"Some people will call it a circus, but you can call it whatever you want.It's two guys who are willing to get in the ring and bang it out. I don't really call that a circus."

The 6-foot-5, 268-pound Edwards is slated to fight this Friday against a former kickboxer named T.J. Gibson.

UFC Teams Up With Boot Campaign To Benefit The Lone Survivor Foundation

Boot_Campaign_logo.gif
The UFC sent the following press release to MMATorch this morning...

UFC TEAMS UP WITH THE BOOT CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT THE LONE SURVIVOR FOUNDATION

Combat Boots and Auction, including rare UFC memorabilia and experiences, will raise funds for rehabilitation center for wounded soldiers

Las Vegas, NV --
The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today that it will partner with Texas-based the Boot Campaign to launch a fundraising effort benefiting the Lone Survivor Foundation. UFC fans are encouraged to "get YOUR boots on" by purchasing The Boot Campaign?s signature "give back" combat boots and apparel at www.BootCampaign.com/UFC , with proceeds benefiting the Lone Survivor Foundation. Fans purchasing "give back" combat boots will be granted free admission to the UFC 130 after-party on May 28 at XS Nightclub at Encore Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

In support of the Lone Survivor Foundation, the UFC is offering fans the chance to bid on rare UFC memorabilia made available to the public for the first time. Items signed by UFC superstars such as Royce Gracie, Chuck Liddell, Cain Velasquez, Georges St-Pierre, Jake Shields and Jon Jones will be included. In addition, the auction will feature a limited-edition UFC Octagon Book (411 out of 600), the Octagon canvas from UFC 129, one-on-one training with UFC fighters, as well as VIP fan experiences and tickets to upcoming UFC events. Beginning May 18, the online auction will be held at UFC.com/boots and give fans an opportunity to raise money for military servicemen and women injured while in the line of duty. The auction will run through UFC 130 on May 28 and all donations received will fund the construction of the Lone Survivor Foundation?s Veteran Ranch in Texas.

Founded by retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, the Lone Survivor Foundation welcomes home, empowers and restores American wounded warriors and their families. Luttrell, author of the #1 New York Times Best-Seller, Lone Survivor, was inspired to build the center after his own recovery post-combat at his ranch in Texas. Luttrell envisioned a facility as a unique place of healing for soldiers recovering from physical wounds and emotional trauma suffered during combat.

The ranch, while still a medical facility, would offer a non-clinical environment designed to offer soldiers and their families an integrated, holistic approach to recovery. Located on over 1,000 acres, the ranch will house up to 15 families a week. The foundation intends to build three other facilities throughout the U.S. in the future.

?The UFC is pleased to partner with the Boot Campaign and the Lone Survivor Foundation as we continue to find ways to support the men and women of our armed forces,? Lorenzo Fertitta, Chairman and CEO of UFC, said.
?Marcus Luttrell is an inspirational hero and we are more than willing to assist him as he creates facilities that will aid in the recovery of our returning servicemen and women.?

?It brings me great pride to unite two of my passions -- the UFC and supporting our wounded warriors,? Luttrell said. ?The UFC is making it possible to achieve our goal of bringing awareness to the service and sacrifice of our military. I hope all UFC fans will be inspired to join the fight and help our troops when they come home.?

What you need to know from this week on “The Ultimate Fighter”

If Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" has been missing anything, it's a bit of that pizazz from Brock Lesnar's WWE days. The former WWE champ still hasn't gone back to his roots, but between Chris Cope's Ric Flair-like "wooos" and Junior dos Santos screaming "what" like he was watching "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Episode 9 felt like being at a wrestling event.

It also turned out to be about and looking past an opponent and weak excuses.

Cope is supposedly the weak link on the show, but he proved everyone wrong again by pulling the upset on Team dos Santos' No. 1 pick Shamar Bailey.

UFC president Dana White called it before the fight saying Bailey looked one-dimensional in his opening round win and was overlooking Cope. Cope wasn't exactly Mr. Aggressive, but he successfully defended against nine takedown attempts and gassed Bailey on his way to a surprising 20-18 win.

Dos Santos was shocked.

"That [decision] was terrible for me," dos Santos said. "I looked at Dana and said 'what?'"

Bailey was also in disbelief saying, "he fought well, but I don't know about that. You can't win backing up the whole time."

White seemed pleased that Cope got the decision and wasn't hearing Bailey's lame excuse during a one-on-one conversation shortly after the fight.

"I just want to let you know I took a risk," Bailey told White. "I wanted to show you I could bang and not just wrestle. I left it in the hands of the judges. I could've took the easy way out and just took him down."

White quickly pointed to Bailey that he did try to take Cope down throughout the fight and had zero success.

There was no controversy in quarterfinal fight No. 1. Knowing that Ramsey Nijem is a strong wrestler, Brock Lesnar worked with Clay Harvison on his takedown defense. Harvison was drilled hard on getting out of the clinch.

Practice didn't make perfect. He was taken down just 10 seconds into the fight. When he tried to get back up he left his back exposed. Nijem worked to get the hooks in, then flattened out Harvison before locking on a rear-naked choke. It was all over in 56 seconds.

Next week it looks like Tony Ferguson goes psycho in the TUF house. He also faces Ryan McGillivray while Zach Davis battles "Cold Steel" Chuck O'Neil.

Lightweight division heating up with trash talk between Pettis and Maynard

The lightweight division is the deepest in the world, but it's lacked sizzle until recently. A division loaded with super-talented, but nice, polite dudes doesn't always sell with the casual fan. UFC 125 served as a prime example when the promotion had a tougher time selling tickets to the Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard fight. The fans made a mistake because it turned out to be a candidate for 2011 Fight of the Year.

In a way, you couldn't blame fan, because Edgar and Maynard didn't generate a ton of heat before the fight. Now, because the division is so crowded at the top, it looks like the days of mutual respect and glove tapping won't be as prevalent.

Anthony Pettis isn't happy with Gray Maynard and didn't hold back during a recent conversation with the Las Vegas Sun.

Last month, Maynard suggested Pettis is a product of overhype.

"I mean, who has he fought? I've been in the trenches this whole time fighting the toughest guys. He throws one kick and then he's the greatest in the world? Let's look at who he's fought. Ben Henderson is the best name," Maynard said referencing Pettis' "Showtime Kick" near the end of his win over Henderson. That kick made Sportscenter's Top 10 Plays of the Year.

Maynard respects a lot of his co-horts at lightweight, but has questions about Pettis.

[...] But for me, guys like Miller, Melendez and all of these guys who have been on the [expletive] grind, fighting the best competition for the past few years… that's what I look at," Maynard told MMAFA.tv. "Who have you fought? I don't care about how good you looked when you fought a scrub. That doesn't matter. If a guy isn't good then you're not supposed to look good. And for me, [Pettis] has fought one good guy in Ben, and he isn't proven yet. He's tough as hell, but we'll see."

Pettis fired back saying Maynard needed to get himself more attention and was just spouting off.

"He needs to get his face in the media somehow," Pettis told the Las Vegas Sun. "Gray is the No. 1 contender, but no one talks about him. He doesn't get a lot of press. I think he's trying to figure out a way to get people to talk about him. If he has to use my name to do that, he has to do what he has to do."

Pettis also said he thought that Maynard lost the fight against Edgar at UFC 125. After a big first round, Maynard allowed Edgar to creep back into the fight and pull out a draw.

QUOTABLES: Jorge Santiago talks about returning to the UFC, his fighting style and his UFC 130 bout with Brian Stann

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jorge_Santiago_5.jpeg
"I left [the] UFC in 2006. I went to Japan, [got] more experience fighting different guys. I always knew, one day, [I would get] back to the UFC and finish the job I was doing there.

It's kind of hard to explain my style. I'm a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, but the past few years, I learned a lot of kickboxing and different kinds of martial arts. So, it's kind of [difficult] to say how [my fight is going to be] and how I'm going to finish my fight. If you see my record, you're going to see knockouts and submissions and TKOs. I consider myself a mixed martial artist. I fight everywhere. I just try to take the chance and finish the fight. That's what I like...

One thing I know for sure, this fight [with Brian Stann at UFC 130] is not going to end [in] decision. This fight is going to end in about the second round or first round. That is [the truth]. If not, my fans need to know, I always fight to finish the fight. No matter how and when, even the fifth round; the second, like, my last fight. And Brian Stann likes the same thing, so, that'll be fun. You cannot blink."

-Jorge Santiago talks to MMAWeekly.com about returning to the UFC and his fight with Brian Stann at UFC 130.

Penick's Analysis: Santiago is extremely fun to watch. He's not the best fighter in the world, and he'll take his share of punishment in a fight, but he has on multiple occasions found ways to win fights he was close to losing, and that heart and determination is another intangible he brings into a fight with him. And I agree with him on this fight with Stann, it's not going to the judges. These two are going to be out to finish the fight, and one of them is going to accomplish their goal on May 28. The card as a whole is still going to be a very entertaining one, and this fight is one of the best of the night, and one I can't wait to see.

Georges St-Pierre Recovering Well From Hyphema

Welterweight king Georges St-Pierre participated in more than his fair share of pre-fight promotional hoopla leading up to his UFC 129 showdown with Jake Shields. While it’s understandable why St-Pierre has gone dark after last Saturday’s blockbuster show wrapped, there is a certain eye injury that the entire GSP Nation is anxiously awaiting updates on. [...]

Lentz vs. Oliveira, Grant vs. Riddle added to UFC on Versus 4 card in Pittsburgh

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_904.jpg
The UFC has added two more fights for this June's UFC on Versus 4 event in Pittsburgh, as they announced on Wednesday a lightweight bout between Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira and a welterweight bout between T.J. Grant and Matt Riddle for the event.

Lentz is coming off his most exciting win in the UFC, a come-from-behind submission over Waylon Lowe at UFC Fight Night 24. The win moved his unbeaten streak to 14 fights, with a 5-0-1 mark inside the Octagon.

Oliveira looks to bounce back from the first loss of his career, suffered at the hands of top contender Jim Miller at UFC 124 in December. The kneebar submission loss halted a 14-fight winning streak to kick off his career, highlighted by exciting submission wins over Darren Elkins and Ultimate Fighter season eight winner Efrain Escudero in the UFC.

Grant has alternated wins and losses since joining the UFC in 2009, and looks to bounce back from a loss yet again in this fight with Riddle. The most recent loss came to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 124 in Decemeber, and he'll look to avoid losing two straight for the first time in his career.

Riddle as well looks to bounce back from a decision loss at UFC 124, his to debuting welterweight Sean Pierson. The Ultimate Fighter season seven veteran has fought all of his career fights in the Octagon, going 5-2 since his debut in 2008.

UFC on Versus 4 is headlined by a welterweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, and takes place from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. on June 26.

We also got Nijem's opinion of his coach, Junior dos Santos, kicking Lew Polley off the team, and on the UFC 129 main event, which saw Nijem's training partner Jake Shields lose to Georges St. Pierre.

UFC 129 asks who is better, Canada or U.S.?

UFC 129 is more than a record-breaking MMA event that will pack 55,000 into the Rogers Centre in Toronto to see two championship belts decided. It's also a face-off between American and Canadian fighters to decide which country is better. Cagewriter breaks it down for you. Which North American country does it better?

GSP vs. Shields: Everything is going for GSP. He's fighting in front of a home crowd, he's at the height of his hype and he's considered invincible, which is exactly why I don't think he'll win. If Shields gets it to the ground, GSP is in trouble. Advantage: Shields and the U.S.

Signature food -- poutine vs. pizza: Poutine, french fries top with cheese curds and brown gravy, sounds amazing. However, pizza -- a food with an ancestor in Italy but that is singularly American -- is much better. It is customizable, yummy when hot and cold, can be made to look like Yoda and everyone loves it. Advantage: U.S.

Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson: BenHen needs to erase the memory of being on the wrong end of the Anthony Pettis highlight reel. That incentive is enough to get the former WEC champ the win. Advantage: Henderson and the U.S.

National anthems -- "O Canada" vs. "The Star-Spangled Banner": The U.S. national anthem, when sung well, can tear the house down, but it's not easy for an average person to sing. That's not true of "O Canada." During the Vancouver Olympics, Canadians showed how easy it was to sing their anthem. Advantage: Canada

National animal: For America, it's the bald eagle, a strong, proud bird that can pick off prey from a mile away. Canada's, which can seen on the header of the new Yahoo! Sports Blog, The Eh Game, is the beaver. Advantage: the U.S.

Nate Diaz vs. Rory McDonald: Does Canada have a Stockton equivalent? Nah The baddest fighters come from Cali, not Quebec. Advantage: U.S.

Other sports: Well, Canada did just win a figure skating world championship and the Canucks knocked my Blackhawks out of the playoffs, and they won the gold medal in both men's and women's hockey at the Vancouver Olympics. Canadians also excel at curling. Outside of that, America rules. Football, baseball, basketball -- I'll take Derrick Rose over Steve Nash -- we're better. We'll give you hockey, Canada. We'll take the rest. Advantage: U.S.

Other fights: On the other UFC 129 Canada vs. U.S. fights, my picks are Makdessi, Patrick, Jabouin for Canada and Ellenberger, Valencia, Jensen for the U.S.

The final tally: America wins, 8-4.

UFC 129 RESULTS: Lyoto Machida knocks Randy Couture into retirement with face kick KO in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MachidaLyoto_CG150_33.jpg
Randy Couture's time as a mixed martial arts fighter has come to a close, and it ended on the business end of one of the most vicious knockouts in UFC history.

Lyoto Machida pulled off a leaping front kick to Couture's face that sent him crashing to the canvas in the second round of their fight at UFC 129 on Saturday night. In front of a crowd of 55,000 at the Rogers Centre, Machida followed in his teammate Anderson Silva's footsteps in pulling off only the second front kick knockout in the UFC, and his came after leaving his feet.

One more follow up strike on the ground was enough to bring an end to the contest, and Couture, less a half tooth knocked out by the kick, reiterated to Joe Rogan in the cage that this is the end of his career as a fighter after 14 years and 30 fights.

Machida snaps a two fight losing streak with the knockout win, and will look to re-insert himself into the top of the division after his first win since October of 2009.

Penick's Analysis: This was one of the most brutal knockout blows ever delivered inside the Octagon. Machida picked a perfect time after picking his spots earlier in the fight, and Couture just never saw it coming. It was insane, creative, amazing and will be in the running for knockout of the year for the rest of 2011.

Less than 12 months after gruesome leg injury, Jason MacDonald wins at UFC 129

Jason MacDonald is one resilient dude. He suffered a broken tibia and fibula back at UFC 113, but refused to be taken from the Montreal cage on a stretcher. He walked to the locker room to the night, so it should come as no surprise that the UFC veteran stormed back less than 12 months later to post a win over Ryan Jensen in fight No. 3 at UFC 129 in Toronto.

Less than 10 seconds into the fight, MacDonald worked a single-leg takedown. Jensen went down and tried to work a guillotine choke, but he was no match for the slick ground game of MacDonald.

The Canadian quickly transitioned to take Jensen's back. It was academic from there. Jensen's right arm was trapped.

MacDonald had the option of going for a triangle choke or armbar. He went with the triangle. Jensen lifted MacDonald off the ground and tried to slam his way out. That was an awful move, it only help MacDonald lock it on tighter. Jensen tapped at 1:37 of the first.

Bellator 42 boasts ratings increase from season-low Bellator 41 event on MTV2

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_286.jpg
Bellator's up and down ratings on MTV2 continued with last weekend's Bellator 42 event from the Lucky Star Casino in Concho, Okla.

According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the show bounced back from a season low for the previous week's Bellator 41 event to bring 199,000 viewers to the cable network.

This week's show featured the semifinal bouts in the light heavyweight tournament, with Richard Hale and Christian M'Pumbu advancing to this season's finals. The numbers made this Bellator's fourth most watched live event on the network for season four. Per the MMAJunkie report, the viewership numbers for this season are below:

* Bellator 35 ratings: 200,000
* Bellator 36 ratings: 230,000
* Bellator 37 ratings: 173,000
* Bellator 38 ratings: 150,000
* Bellator 39 ratings: 174,000
* Bellator 40 ratings: 218,000
* Bellator 41 ratings: 132,000
* Bellator 42 ratings: 199,000

Penick's Analysis: There's no rhyme or reason to the numbers Bellator is getting this season. They've had big numbers against competing televised events and small numbers against no-competition, and the biggest factor on people tuning in regularly is probably the night of the week they're running. Saturday's are not a good day to run for week-to-week viewership. That's a night where most in their target demos are going out and not staying in to watch fights every week. Sure, they'll take a couple of Saturday's out of the month to watch a UFC or Strikeforce event, but to ask fans to dedicate 12 weeks in a row to Saturday viewing is simply not going to bring a regular audience, and I think that's what we're seeing with these fluctuations in viewership.

KELLER: UFC 129's Top Five Moments topped by Lyoto Machida's front kick knockout

By: Wade Keller, MMATorch Supervising Editor

Staff07KellerMMA_120_48.jpg
(1) LOYOTO MACHIDA'S FRONT KICK KO'ING RANDY COUTURE AND ENDING HIS CAREER

If Couture wanted the last five seconds of his career to be a YouTube moment for the ages, it happened. I'm old enough that I was going to karate classes back when the original Karate Kid movie came out, and I remember the black belts (well, everyone, actually) mocking the crane kick that won Ralph Macchio's fight. Who's laughing now?! (Actually, back then some of the teenage and twenty-something brown and black belts would use it to try to score points on outmatched students during sparring to humiliate them). I would have never thought it would be the final blow for the career of one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. People would have booed if that were the final scene of a scripted movie for being too cheesy. And what's with the return of karate in general in MMA? It was basically a discredited style within the confines of MMA rules in the 2000s, and suddenly in the 2010s it's being re-legitimized. Maurice Smith had his moments in the 1990s, but between Machida in general and now Anderson Silva and Machida ending fights with front kicks, karate is back! All of those karate schools that changed their name by switching out "Karate" and putting "MMA" in its place might want to switch back.

(2) "I CAN'T SEE OUT OF MY LEFT EYE"

This was a show with many stand-out moments, but arguably the top pound-for-pound fighter seeming genuinely shaken and scared by the fact that he couldn't see out of his left eye, during the fight and after, is a big deal. It may not be serious, and let's hope not, but that is the cloud over this show, which GSP so hoped would be a shining moment in front of the 55,000 fans at the former SkyDome. It affected his performance, although I do think even accounting for that, Jake Shields quieted a lot of his critics by hanging for five rounds even with a one-eyed version of GSP.

(3) THAT HUGE HEMOTOMA

HeadBump1_180.png
I would have been more scared for Mark Hominick, but my two year old son slipped on ice and hit his head on a park bench and had a similar hemotoma on his head last month and he turned out to be just fine (see picture). But boy was that nasty looking. I'm no expert, but I think Joe Rogan was a little more worried about it breaking open than he needed to be. The skin was intact, and it was just a lot of swelling and totally superficial. Obviously the ref was right to have the doc check on it, but I'm glad that didn't end the fight. I loved that the crowd "ohhed" every time the camera caught a glimpse of it. If you're a fighter and you hear that during your fight and you don't know what they're reacting to, that has to be disconcerting. Your imagination could run wild.

(4) THREE SUPLEXES IN ONE ROUND

Rory MacDonald's three suplexes of Nate Diaz would have made the late Eddie Guerrero and Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle proud. Has that ever happened before in UFC? Not only is karate making a comeback in MMA, but so is pro wrestling! What's next, someone finishing a fight with a figure-four leglock or legdrop?

(5) THE PACKED SKYDOME

It'll always be SkyDome to me (not "The SkyDome," just "SkyDome," as they insisted back when it was opened in the late 1980s). That was a major statement by UFC to fill that arena like that. What a scene. I've been covering UFC since the first PPV (for the Torch Newsletter back before there was an Internet) and I remember those shows in Dothan, Ala. I just wish Rogan and Goldberg wouldn't talk with a sense of derision about Dothan whenever they bring it up. Without Alabama supporting UFC when many states wouldn't allow them to run events, where would they be today? I live in the opposite of Alabama (Minnesota) so that's not me being a homer. I'm just saying a little shoutout to those early supporters in those crowds of 2,000 would be in order rather than making it seem like they'd "never go back to that small-time hell-hole." SkyDome was well lit and the wide shots were just amazing to see. UFC - and MMA in general - has come so far. It was the first time UFC gave Pride a run for its money in terms of looking like a huge show. I was half-expecting that crazy-good albeit over-the-top female announcer Lenne Hardt and the grand stage entrances like Pride.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Randy Couture's walk through the tunnel after his fight for the final time and then later embracing his wife backstage... Vladimir Matyushenko's blitz KO of Jason Brilz... 21 year old Rory MacDonald giving 26 year old Nate Diaz a piece of his own scrappy medicine in a Statement Win. There's a new young elusive unorthodox Energizer Bunny in the Welterweight Division... Ivan Menjivar breaking the nose of Charlie Valencia with an elbow... John Makdessi's spinning back fist KO of Kyle Watson, which could have been no. 1 on a lesser show. Wow!... The tooth flying out of Randy Couture's mouth after the Machida kick deserves a separate mention from the kick itself; in slo-mo in high-def, that was pretty cool...

OTHER THOUGHTS:

I like UFC Central with former WEC announcer Todd Harris staying on board to host the post-show wrap-up (which looks a lot like ESPN's MMA Live)... Mike Goldberg said "class act" or "classy" just twice during the entire show, by my count, keeping his streak alive, but not overdoing it... Now if we can get Goldberg to remember to include the person he's talking about at the start of his sentences. I mean, "Dangling his subject at the end of his subjects, Goldberg does." How hard is it to remember to name the person you're talking about the start of your sentence instead of having to insert it awkwardly at the end, such as "One of the best pound-for-pound fighters, is Jose Aldo"... Another announcing critique. They use too many pronouns where most viewers aren't necessarily going to know which fighter they're talking about. "He's got a great ground game" or "Look at the position of his left foot." I mean, just say their name every time and avoid all ambiguity for the viewers... Quote of the Night is Dana White telling Randy Couture, after he mentioned he lost a tooth when Machida kicked him, "We'll buy you a better one"... Did I miss anything big?
