Bellator 51: Warren Starched In 64 Seconds

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

While the majority of MMA fans were wrapped up in the aftermath of UFC 135, Bellator Fighting Championships treated fans to some scintillating bantamweight action. Bellator?s 51st event featured the opening round of the 135 pound tournament, and boasts some of the finest competitor?s in the division today. In all, eight bantamweights took to the cage in hopes of advancing to the next round of the tournament, of course, only four emerged victorious.

Ed West opened the tournament up when he collided with fan favorite Brazilian, Luis Alberto Nogueria, who entered the tournament as one of the notable favorites. Ed West proved that hard work and tenacity inside the cage pays off, as he never contemplated wresting, instead opting to utilize his range and pick away at Nogueira. In the end, the judges saw in favor of West, who did a fine job of avoiding the aggression of ?Betao?.

The action only increased as the night progressed. Marcos Galvao displayed his continued evolution while meeting former WEC titleholder Chase Beebe in the second featured fight of the night. The fight proved not only competitive, but extremely memorable. Both men fought for the finish from the jump. Beebe looked to have more than a single guillotine choke sunk tight; his Brazilian foe refused to succumb. Rather, Galvao pushed forward, showcased some highly improved wrestling, and bombarded Beebe with numerous windmill shots that hurt the American repeatedly. While a close fight, Galvao looked the definite victor; Fortunately for him, two of three judges agreed.

Highly touted Nova Uniao prospect, Eduardo "Dudu" Dantas lived up to the enormous amount of hype behind him, as he soundly outclassed the durable Wilson Reis. Dantas pushed forward from the opening bell, showing no fear of Reis or his punching power. After five minutes Dantas was the obviously superior fighter. He showed no fear in the pocket, and launched vicious shots at Reis. With just over a minute having ticked away in the second frame, Dantas unloaded with a massive flying knee that dropped Reis. A series of follow up punches rendered his Brazilian foe unconscious. Dantas passes another test with flying colors.

In the evening?s main event, brash featherweight title holder, Joe Warren welcomed former Olympic Bronze medalist, Alexis Vila to the promotion. Vila, who is 40 years old, came out early and established his tournament intentions early. The Cuban defector unleashed a heavy shot that had Warren reeling. Though the outspoken champion appeared to recover fairly well, his rebound didn?t last too long. A brutal left hook completely starched Warren just 64 seconds into the fight. The first time bantamweight competitor was unconscious long before his head bounced off the mat violently.

The loss marks Warren?s first defeat since submitting to Bibiano Fernandes at the 2009 Dream 11 - Featherweight Grand Prix Final. Two blemishes now mark Warren?s record; the standout wrestler has assembled an impressive 5-1 record for the Bellator promotion, and despite coming up brutally short on Saturday evening, he still holds a firm grasp on the promotions featherweight title.

With the upset victory banked, Vila emerges a favorite to advance to the finals. Should bracketing favor Vila, and see him paired with Ed West or Marcos Galvao, his chances of advancing increase significantly. Should fate deal a cruel hand, the dangerous 40 year old may find himself facing the future of the division in the form of Eduardo Dantas.

Strikeforce Challengers 19 brings 203,000 viewers to Showtime

Last Friday's Strikeforce Challengers 19 card saw a slight uptick in viewership from August's 18th edition of the series, bringing in 203,000 viewers to Showtime, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com. The card, headlined by Lorenz Larkin's third straight victory in Strikeforce, took place from the Pearl at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, and also featured victories by Ryan Couture and Jason High during the broadcast. White video scrum: Henderson and Le wanted to be in the UFC, Showtime?s deadline is quickly approaching

The defection of Strikeforce fighters to the UFC was inevitable, but even the most cynical MMA viewer has to admit it's happening at an accelerated pace.

Cung Le is gone from Strikeforce and slated for a fight in San Jose at UFC 139 against Wanderlei Silva. Dan Henderson just left the promotion as well to headline that same UFC card against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Strikeforce, purchased by Zuffa back in March, has now lost its heavyweight, light heavyweight and welterweight champions to the UFC. How much longer is Showtime interested in broadcasting a promotion that's losing all its big stars?

"It depends on whether they want to seriously stay in the business, in the mixed martial arts business," White told the gathered media following the UFC 135 prefight press conference. "There's a deadline on the deal. [...] I think it's another month [they need to decide] if they want to be in the business."

White said the problem with smaller promotions is their desire to get a television deal come hell or high water.

"Everybody that comes into this business thinks pay-per-view or free TV is the answer, is the Holy Grail, it's the answer to everybody's problems. [Expletive]. Either one of those two things will put you out of business. They get into these bad deals with companies, and next thing you know, you're $30 million in the whole," White said. "I would classify everybody who's done a television deal out there besides us has done a bad deal. Everyone."

As far as Le and Henderson, White said in matter-of-fact fashion that both wanted to fight in the UFC. He also called the Rua-Henderson match up a great fight and that the winner is probably in line for the next 205-pound title shot after Rashad Evans gets his crack.

UFC 135 Results: Mark Hunt defeats Ben Rothwell in gassed out decision

Mark Hunt picked up his second straight win on Saturday night after snapping a six fight losing streak, defeating Ben Rothwell by decision in brutal heavyweight fight.

Brutal because both fighters managed to look fairly awful through a laborious and gassed out 15 minutes in the high altitude of Denver, Colo. Rothwell had no energy after the first round, and Hunt took over as well as he could from there, and earned the decision win.

Rothwell has now lost two of his three fights in the UFC, while Hunt moved back to .500 at 7-7 with the win.

Alexis Vila?s long road to Bellator includes defection, prison

Alexis Vila?s long road to Bellator includes defection, prison

Cuban wrestler-turned-fighter Alexis Vila became a well-known name in MMA on Saturday, when he knocked out fellow world-class wrestler Joe Warren in the opening round of Bellator's bantamweight tournament. Before starting in MMA and putting together a 10-0, Vila's past includes an Olympic bronze medal, a world silver medal, a defection to the United States from Cuba and a stint in prison.

Vila was once part of Cuba's dominant freestyle wrestling team, winning a bronze at the 1996 Olympics. He defected to the U.S. in 1997, leaving behind his family and country, and began coaching at Michigan State where he worked with future UFC fighters Rashad Evans and Gray Maynard. Then, he got into a car accident that changed his life.

Just three years after September 11, Vila crashed his car into a terminal at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. No one was hurt, but authorities thought he was attempting a terrorist act and charged him with airport violence. He could have gone to prison for 20 years. Vila plead down for a three-year jail sentence.

He talked about his time in prison on the MMA Hour:

"I was in prison for three years," Vila said. "It's no good. I'm a little guy so people who don't know me try things all the time. So I fought a lot. They didn't believe that I could fight. I said when I get out and I fight I'm going to be the champ."

At five-foot-four, Vila doesn't have an imposing figure, but he does have the kind of cauliflower ear that can only be earned through years of brutal training. His tormentors in prison likely learned the same lesson as Warren did on Saturday night: You don't mess with a little man with a bad left hook.

Next, he'll take that striking and world-class wrestling to Arizona, where he'll fight Marcos Galvao in the Bellator semifinals on Oct. 22.

Nate Diaz is right in the middle of the lightweight title chase

Nate Diaz is right in the middle of the lightweight title chase

Nate Diaz is a carbon copy of his older brother Nick. He has a very similar skill set, and like his wacky bro, he's a bit off kilter. Thankfully, he's not completely unmanageable like Nick is which means Nate has a real shot to be challenging for the UFC 155-pound title some time in 2012.

Nate's improving maturity was on display at UFC 135. The 26-year-old was facing one of his idols, but never got suckered into fighting recklessly. He methodically broke down Takanori Gomi and thoroughly dominated the Japanese legend in a first round submission victory.

It was a triumphant return to a division, Diaz should've never exited. His experiment at 170 pounds produced so-so results. Now he's back at 155 where his 6-foot frame and style make it rough on a division filled with guys in the 5-7 to 5-9 range. While Diaz was gone, he watched some of his previous victims move into prime positions.

"A lot of the guys I beat are top contenders at 55. Melvin Guillard is about to get a title [shot] and [Clay] Guida, I beat up Guida pretty good," Diaz said. "I can't stay at 70 when all the guys I'm whuppin' are at the top of the [lightweight] division."

Where should Diaz be ranked? Currently, he's not part of the latest USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings:

1. Frank Edgar

2. Gray Maynard

3. Gilbert Melendez

4. Shinya Aoki

5. Eddie Alvarez

6. Clay Guida

7. Ben Henderson

8. Jim Miller

9. Melvin Guillard

10. Anthony Pettis

11. B.J. Penn

12. Tatsuya Kawajiri

BACIOR: UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Jon Jones - The Hero or The Villian?

By: Mike Bacior, MMATorch Contributor

Jon_Jones_180_2.jpeg
December 5, 2009. The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. After brutalizing Matt Hamill early, Jon Jones makes a critical mistake in throwing a couple of 12-6 elbows, leading to a disqualification loss. After the fight, Jones endears himself to UFC fans everywhere with his humble acceptance of the outcome, saying that he made a mistake, there is no longer any pressure of being undefeated, and giving glory to God. A young and promising prospect now has more fans then ever on his side, and the future still looks bright even after this unfortunate loss.

Fast forward to September 24, 2011. Jones is now the UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, and he's just made his first title defense in a convincing submission victory over a tough Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. His performances have been nothing but spectacular. However, something is different now, and fans have become increasingly divided on the subject of Mr. Jones. Many claim that his head has become too big, too fast, and that he is not the humble fighter he makes himself out to be. Others still support the champion, saying that those who have turned against him are just mad because he has taken out one of their favorite fighters in Shogun or Rampage.

So who is Jones, is he the humble hero? Or is he the "cocky" villain? The answer lies somewhere in between. Jones probably is the religious man he paints himself as, and inside he seems to be a reasonably good person. He even chased down a robber on the day of his first title fight! But Jones does say many things that make him seem a very arrogant man.

However, put yourself into his position. You are the youngest champ in UFC history, blowing away every opponent that has been put in front of you, and have yet to face any real adversity in the cage. Of course your head is going to get a little bigger. Of course you are going to start to think you are the greatest. It is only natural, and Jones is only a human. Does that mean he is a bad person? No, not at all.

His extremely confident (it is hard to say overconfident when he has performed this well) attitude has, and will certainly continue to rub many people the wrong way, which is understandable. The best approach to Jones is to simply sit back, and enjoy his incredible talents in the cage. He can not be painted a hero or a villain, he is just an extremely talented young fighter who will continue to do great things for many years. Enjoy.

Video picks: Koscheck vs. Hughes, a fight the fans deserve

Josh Koscheck finally got Matt Hughes. It's a fight he wanted two or three years ago, but claims Hughes ducked him and all of his American Kickboxing Academy teammates (Jon Fitch and Mike Swick). Now Koscheck wants a piece of Hughes' hide for what he calls a lack of respect.

"Matt Hughes definitely disrespected me when he called me a kid. I'm a lot younger than him, I'm a lot faster and a lot stronger, I'm a better fighter than him," Koscheck said of the 38-year-old Hughes. "The new kid on the block is going to come up and take out the old man."

Aside from personal reasons, Koscheck. 33, thinks this is a fight that fans have been yearning for:

"Fighting Matt Hughes is a good comeback fight for me," he said. "I think the fans deserved this fight a long time ago, and now we're getting the opportunity to do it," said Koscheck.

Check out ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe and Damon Martin from MMAWeekly as we break down the fight on RawVegas.tv using the Las Vegas betting odds. Koscheck is a minus-600 favorite, while Hughes fetches plus-400 as an underdog.

ROUNDTABLE: Favorite Matt Hughes fight ahead of his UFC 135 bout with Josh Koscheck - Hansen, Hyden, Perez, Hobaugh, Pelkey and Park

matt_hughes_photo_200_1.jpg
With Matt Hughes perhaps approaching his final fight on Saturday against Josh Koscheck, what is your favorite Matt Hughes fight and why?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Disclaimer: I am going to violate the spirit of this question. I have two favorite Matt Hughes fights, and I can't separate them from each other. Both fights were against a fierce rival, both were heavily hyped fights, and both had spectacular finishes. That's right, my favorite Matt Hughes fights are his two losses against B.J. Penn at UFC 46 and UFC 123.

I love Matt Hughes, especially now that his bromance with B.J. is deep enough to rival my own personal B.J. Penn man crush. But come on, man, Of all of the fights Hughes has been in, seeing B.J. shock the world at UFC 46, and seeing B.J. announce to the world that he was BACK stand above all the other Hughes fights.

And those fights against Trigg didn't suck either.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I've never been a huge Matt Hughes fan, to be honest. However, I did really like his first fight against Carlos Newton at UFC 34 where Hughes won by knockout after slamming Newton to the mat. That was a damn powerful slam and I remember the controversy about whether Hughes was out as well. I remember Newton holding the top of the cage as well so I don't have a lot of sympathy for his claim that Hughes was out, though.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Hands down my favorite fight of his is when he faced Frank Trigg the second time at UFC 52. That was a monumental fight that has been embedded in many fan's brains due to the comeback from a low blow by Trigg, that resulted in Hughes picking up, and carrying Trigg across the cage for a huge slam. Such a great moment. And also, the very first UFC PPV that I ever watched. Monumental and memorable for many reasons.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

His UFC 34 fight with Carlos Newton back in November 2001 was my favorite. Newton had just won the title from Pat Miletech and Hughes was making a statement with this fight. The first round had been pretty even. At the start of the second round, Hughes took Newton down and Newton secured a triangle choke. I thought the fight was over at that moment. In a last ditch effort Hughes picked up Newton and tried holding Newton above his head and resting him on the cage to lesson the effect of the hold. You can see from the replay before Hughes slams Newton and knocks him out, that he is himself almost out on his feet. When they hit the canvas, they are both unconscious. Hughes comes to and Newton is out cold. Matt Hughes has to be told he won the fight. Best Matt Hughes fight of many.

MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I've never beena Matt Hughes fan. In fact, I've outwardly disliked him for years. As such, my favorite Matt Hughes fight is the third B.J. Penn fight. Does this make me a bad person?

CHRIS PARK, MMATORCH UK SPECIALIST

For me it has to be his dramatic comeback win against Frank Trigg.

Having being caught by an accidental head-butt; Trigg pounded on Hughes to an inch of taking his title. Hughes somehow survived, scooped Trigg up onto his shoulder, ran the length of the Octagon and then drilled him into the canvass.

It's up there with the best ever come backs and is one of the defining moments in the career of the man I still regard to be the greatest welterweight of all time. @MMATorchUK

UFC 135 Live Blog: Jon Jones vs. Rampage Jackson Updates

Filed under:

Jon Jones faces Rampage Jackson at UFC 135.DENVER -- This is the UFC 135 live blog for Jon Jones vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, the main event of tonight's UFC pay-per-view from the Pepsi Center.

Jones (13-1) won the belt from Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 128 in March and will be making his first title defense in this fight. Jackson (32-8), who is coming off wins over Lyoto Machida and Matt Hamill, held the title previously in May 2007 through July 2008.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: A crouching Jones comes forward on his hands and knees to start the fight, which Jackson probably wasn't expecting. Jackson swats down at him and Jones reaches for a leg, but settles for the clinch after taking a knee to the gut. They battle for position against the fence and Jones lands a nice short elbow. The action stalls in the clinch, and the crowd isn't happy about it. They separate on their own and go to the center of the cage. Jones flicks out a few kicks to keep Rampage on the outside. Jackson tries to work his way in close and Jones grabs him in a clinch and nearly trips him to the mat. Looping hook from Jackson, then a head kick from Jones. Jones mixes up the kicks all over Jackson's body, and Jackson has little answer for them at the moment. Jones hops up in the air but does nothing, and Jackson rushes in only to get clinched again. Big spinning head kick by Jones missed a ducking Jackson in the final ten seconds. Jackson attacks with a series of heavy, looping hooks, but Jones avoids almost all of them. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Jones.

Round 2:
"Find your range!" Jackson's boxing coach, Mark Kinney, shouted at him in the corner. He comes out for the second and catches a Jones kick before coming forward with hooks. Jones avoids them, and just gets out of the way of a big uppercut moments later. Jones lands a nice straight left and Jackson nods at him. Jackson trying to bob and weave his way in, and Jones has his chin dangerously high as he backs away from the hooks. More kicks from Jones, then he reaches for the clinch. He's not letting Jackson work once he gets within a certain range. It's smart, until they have to disengage. Good left hand counter by Jackson to a Jones leg kick. Jones knocks Jackson back with a spinning back kick to the body. Jackson comes forward behind a nice left hook. Less than minute left in the round now. Jones lands a left, then a straight right. He superman punches his way into a clinch and eyes the clock. With less than ten seconds, Jones pulls guard and tries a triangle, but there's no time left to work. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Jones.

Round 3:
Jones locks up a standing front headlock, then slips off and has to dodge some hooks on his way back out. Jones targeting Jackson's legs with kicks now, then shoots for a double-leg and puts Jackson on his back. Jones easily goes from side control to full mount. He struggles to free his hands so he can drop some elbows, but Jackson's making it tough. Jackson pushes him off and gets to his feet in the scramble, though he's cut around his right eye. A front kick by Jones snaps into Jackson's jaw. Jackson lunges with a hook, but hits only air. He seems to be getting slightly desperate and maybe a little winded, so Jones does a little shuffle to show how fresh he is. Jumping knee by Jones in the final minute of the round. Jones looks off to one side and then flicks out a straight left. Jones shoots in at the horn and flips Jackson over him as he walks off to his corner without looking back. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Jones.

Round 4:
They touch them up to start and Jones lands a glancing blow, but Jackson wobbles backwards as if he's badly hurt. Seems like he's playing possum here, and Jones approaches cautiously. Jones slips off a kick attempt and Jackson comes forward, but can't capitalize. They clinch up and Jones gets the takedown against the fence. Jackson turns and gives up his back and Jones locks up a rear naked choke. Jackson can't do much to defend as Jones rolls him over and squeezes. He tries to fight for one of Jones' hands, but it's too late. He has to tap. Jon Jones has successfully defended his light heavyweight title.

Jon Jones def. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson via submission (rear naked choke) at 1:14 of round 4

They met in the center after the stoppage and Jackson patted Jones on the shoulder. Seems like the youngster earned some respect from the veteran tonight. They shake hands as Jackson's team attempts to see to the cut near his eye.

Confident Rashad Evans pulling for Jon Jones win at UFC 135

DENVER - Rashad Evans, who faces the winner of Saturday's UFC 135 main event, admits he has an odd feeling that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will emerge victorious over UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

But he'll also admit he's pulling for Jones. There's beef between them, and he wants nothing more than to face his former training partner in the cage.

"I would rather fight Jon Jones," Evans said Friday at a UFC Fight Club Q&A session in Denver. "We already have a situation with the whole Greg Jackson thing and the thing splitting up, so I would like to fight him."

UFC 135 "JONES VS. RAMPAGE" PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and fight predictions for pay-per-view event in Denver

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_135_Poster.jpg

Jon Jones vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

This is the biggest test in Jon Jones' career thus far. Jackson has taken this fight as seriously as any he's had in the UFC, and regardless of the immense amount of talent we've seen out of Jones thus far in his UFC career, he's never faced a fighter with the level of durability and experience as Rampage.

The win over Shogun in March was fantastic, and Jones established himself as an elite fighter, but despite the path of destruction he's left in his wake we all need to pause on the expectations of him at 24 years old. He has been incredible to watch, and he will continue to be, but no one is unbeatable, and we still haven't seen how he'll react to adversity in a fight, something he absolutely will face in this fight against Rampage.

Jackson hasn't been as aggressive or as opportunistic over his last several fights as we've seen from him in the past, but that's not to say it's something he's completely lost. He's got power in his hands that, if they land, will hurt Jones. Will it be enough? That's what we'll find out on Saturday.

With what he's shown in his short UFC career, Jon Jones should win this fight. He's younger, he's faster, he's got an unorthodox, creative and exciting striking game and his grappling and ground and pound are treats to watch. But Rampage can win this fight. He can hurt Jones with his strikes and is a very durable and difficult opponent to stop. Ultimately, I think Jones will pass this test, but it's going to be a huge hurdle. The statement would be if he made it look easy, but I don't see this being that type of fight, not with Rampage's striking and defensive wrestling to make things more difficult.

PREDICTION: Jones via unanimous decision

Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck (Welterweight)

Josh Koscheck might be taking this fight on only 19 day's notice, but he's coming off of a title fight of his own and is simply a better fighter in 2011 than is Matt Hughes.

Hughes pulled off a few good wins in a row before getting demolished by B.J. Penn last year, but there's nothing in his game that can threaten Koscheck at this stage of his career. Koscheck is a more credentialed wrestler and is fairly capable of out-grappling Hughes if the fight gets into the clinch, but neither is going to keep this one on the ground on Saturday.

On the feet, Koscheck is simply a lot faster than Hughes, and is likely going to be able to engage and back out before Hughes is able to counter. For as great as Hughes has been in his career, he's nearing the end, and I just can't see this being a fight he'll win.

PREDICTION: Koscheck via TKO in the first round

Travis Browne vs. Rob Broughton (Heavyweight)

We get to the drop off for this card from the top two fights here, with two talented but mid level-at-best heavyweights helping to fill this card out.

Broughton returns after nearly a year out of action after his UFC debut last October. The Wolfslair product is multi-faceted grappler and striker, but while he's got a lot of wins by both knockout and submission, he's not necessarily an elite talent in any aspect of the game.

Browne is still undefeated in his career, with a 2-0-1 mark in the UFC. His superman punch against Stefan Struve in his last fight was excellent, but that fight was fairly evenly contested prior to the perfectly placed punch.

Browne is a good enough grappler to keep the fight standing if Broughton tries to take him down, and his striking and height/reach advantage should play to his favor.

PREDICTION: Browne via TKO in the first round

Nate Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi (Lightweight)

Diaz returns to the lightweight division after getting manhandled by Rory MacDonald in his last fight, while Gomi hopes to rebound from his submission loss to Clay Guida in January.

Gomi has had problems with his submission losses in the past, including two submission losses in his three UFC fights. However, while Diaz had a couple of good performances in his move back to welterweight, he remains a middle-tier guy that does not always react the best to adversity in his fights.

If Gomi can work his power striking game and avoid submissions in this fight, he's got a good chance at taking the decision. Diaz is comfortable on his back, but that gets him into trouble and could again be his downfall in this fight if he can't finish Gomi.

PREDICTION: Gomi via unanimous decision

Ben Rothwell vs. Mark Hunt (Heavyweight)

Mark Hunt gets a pay-per-view fight after knocking out Chris Tuchscherer, and that's all you need to know about the quality of this fight card. Hunt has always had power, and he's got some big wins in Pride under his belt, but he's only 6-7, and lost six straight prior to the win over Tuchscherer.

Rothwell hasn't fought in over a year due to injury, but he's still a much better fighter than Hunt in 2011. He's a better grappler by far, and with a seven inch height advantage (and the ability to use that height), he'll have the advantage striking as well.

Hunt got the win over Tuchscherer to snap his losing streak, but he's not going to take out a fighter like Rothwell, even with the layoff Rothwell has had.

PREDICTION: Rothwell via submission in the first round

======Spike TV Preliminary Card======

Aaron Riley vs. Tony Ferguson (Lightweight)

Riley's a tough veteran with a ton of experience, but he is making his return to action after 16 months away from the cage, against a talented and dangerous striker in Ferguson.

Ferguson drops to lightweight for his first fight in the UFC after winning the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter in June, and if he doesn't have any adverse effects from the weight cut I think he should do well.

Doing well doesn't mean he'll be blasting through Riley, as Riley is simply not a fighter that gets taken out easily. I think this is a fight that Ferguson should win, but Riley's a tough test and will give him a good fight.

PREDICTION: Ferguson via unanimous decision

Nick Ring vs. Tim Boetsch (Middleweight)

Tim Boetsch has lost four times in his career, but all of those losses were at light heavyweight against very tough competition. Outside of those losses Boetsch has mauled a number of competitors, including a dominating decision over Kendall Grove in his middleweight debut in May.

Ring is undefeated and is a very capable middleweight, but he hasn't competed against anything near the level of competition Boetsch has been in the cage against. Ring's got a slight height advantage, but that will be negated by Boetsch's strength and superior ability to press the pace.

This is Boetsch's fight to lose. He's simply much stronger and more experienced, and looked fantastic in his middleweight debut. If he can continue off of that, he could make a good run at 185 lbs.

PREDICTION: Boetsch via TKO in the second round

======Facebook Preliminary Card Quick Picks=======

* Eddie Yagin over Junior Assuncao via unanimous decision
* Cole Escovedo over Takeya Mizugaki via unanimous decision
* Ricardo Romero over James Te Huna via submission in the second round

Video: Highlights from stellar Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov card

If you were busy doing something nowhere near as important as watching fights last night, and missed Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov, here are the highlights from a top-to-bottom fantastic card. Strikeforce commentator Mauro Renallo is slightly excited in this clip, so you may want to turn the sound on your computer down.

The main card featured two submissions, two knockouts and a tight five-round decision. Daniel Cormier delivered an upset, Mo Lawal provided a comeback after more than a year off, and Pat Healy started things off with a come-from-behind victory. Really, what more can you ask from a card?

The Ultimate Fighter 14 Episode 1 Blog - John Albert breaks down his elimination fight and debut episode on Spike TV

By: John Albert, TUF 14 Bantamweight Competitor

John_Albert_180_1.jpg
Throughout this season of The Ultimate Fighter, bantamweight contestant John Albert will be giving MMATorch readers his thoughts on each episode after they air, providing his first hand experience of what happened both on and off screen. Here are his thoughts on last night's debut episode.

I will start off by saying I was very impressed with the fights in the first episode, with exception for my fight hahaha. The farthest place I had ever gone for a fight was Oregon, so the initial experience of flying Las Vegas was exciting, and staying in a hotel by myself was very unique, especially since there was no contact allowed within the hotel or outside.

The weight cut process was harder for TUF prelims fights than I've ever had to do. We only got two hours of slot time to go to a gym, I ended up having to go back and forth three times to cut my weight because of the transportation of fighters. They didn't want us mingling with other fighters or the residents, so there were shifts of three to five fighters going to the gym and the two hours started as soon as we entered the gym; so the back and forth of not being able to stay and complete the weight cut in one sitting was horrible.

With TV there is always waiting involved, so the weight cut was even harder because our scheduled weigh in was pushed back for production and what not. But, entering Mandalay Bay and seeing Dana in the middle of the Octagon kinda took all the stress and pain away, because I knew that it was finally my time. Seeing all the banners and the tremendous amount of seats that could be filled to watch the fighters fight was pretty astounding.

Then Dana gave us his usual "Do you wanna be a fighter?" speech and I had seen it so many times and figured it would be just like that, another speech. But after he gave it to us it set like a fire inside it was so inspiring, because it was directed to us, you know, it was for me, then we got to weigh in and see our opponent. So in short I was pretty damn excited to be there and fighting in that arena.

I got selected to fight Orville Smith; I didn't know much about him except he had a good amount of experience. He was 11-4, so 15 pro fights, but the number of fights someone has never really bothers me. I knew he already fought Matt Jaggers who has a wealth of experience and went to a decision with him, and actually beat Josh Ferguson so I felt like he wouldn't be a pushover.

The locker rooms were pretty crowded but I got my time to warm up. It was odd preparing for a fight kinda by myself - I didn't know the corners and they didn't know me - so there was a lot of mental preparation on my own to get me ready for my fight. It was pretty cool because a former teammate of mine, Brian Caraway, was in my locker room which eased the tension a bit, but I didn't get much help from him cause he is a nervous nancy and was getting himself ready for his fight.

I got my heart rate up, stretched out and was ready to go. I didn't get to warm up like I usually do but I was ready as it is. I got in the ring and it was like any other fight, I was surprised at how not nervous I was, I was truly ready to win my fight and get into the house. I was very disappointed in how TUF portrayed my fight, also a little butt hurt on what Dana and Bisping had to say during my fight as well. My total fight was only two and a half to three minutes long, but they showed only 50 seconds and they didn't show any of the good stuff.

I can break the fight down pretty easy. I was a little taken aback at how much Orville was backing up and not putting any pressure on - I mean this is TUF 14 I was expecting a lot more from him - so I worked my double jab, right leg kick or right cross quite a bit. I leg kicked him so many times and hard enough that he literally squealed like a little girl and was limping (of course they didn't show that). I also implemented the thai clinch in the fight and was throwing knees like crazy, that moment when Bisping said I picked him up and slammed him confused me. Hopefully the viewers recognized what actually happened. I had Orville in another thai clinch and he was backing out real hard; I held tight but he literally jumped guard from the clinch, so no slam or even real takedown on my part.

Another thing that is frustrating with having corners you don't know or being an unknown fighter is people see I was smashing him on the feet, but don't know I'm a grappler first and a striker second. I'm not gonna force a stand up when I feel I can take him on the ground. I successfully passed his guard, took his back and choked him out, done deal. A win is what was most important to me that fight as I wanted to get into the house first.

I contracted Mersa a week prior to that fight, it was bad and I was on strong antibiotics all the way up to the day of the fight, so anyone that fights knows how antibiotics and Mersa can affect your stamina; maybe I didn't push the pace or wasn't as exciting as they thought. I fought my own fight trying to conserve energy and not gas out because there wasn't much in the tank because of the antibiotics and Mersa, but a win's a win and it didn't go to a decision and I choked his ass out, so I hope the viewers can appreciate that.

As for the other fights they all were pretty amazing; everyone fought their heart's out, and there was some real skill involved in those matches. Bantamweight John Dodson and TJ Dillashaw stood out the most to me as they were confident and crisp, and stopped both their guys in the first round. That body shot from Dodson against Brandon Merkt was amazing and the ground and pound of TJ was a sight. Featherweights Diego Barndao and Akira really stood out with stand up technique, those were some amazing knockouts. The heart of Dennis Bermudez really impressed me because he was hurt and almost out and was completely controlled the first round, and he ended up coming back to win his fight. There was a lot of excitement and stress coming into this, the opportunity to fight and become The Ultimate Fighter is life changing so I felt so lucky just to get that opportunity.

Watch John every Wednesday on The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV, and check back here each week for his take on each of the episodes after they air.

Boxing fan Dana White hammers the ref in Floyd-Ortiz debacle

Boxing fan Dana White hammers the ref in Floyd-Ortiz debacle

If I heard "that's boxing at its best" one more time on Sunday, I was going to scream.

What was shaping up as a good fight, was destroyed by a chain of events that left fight fans shaking their heads or completely enraged at the ending of the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight.

After a headbutt by Ortiz, the fight was stopped and eventually re-started by one of the fighters. Floyd Mayweather took advantage of Ortiz's naivety and knocked him silly when his hands were down. Many are blaming referee Joe Cortez for losing control of the fight, including UFC president Dana White. White tweeted:

"Ref never sent a fighter to a neutral corner to take a point. Especially after a intentional head butt! That's why u have a ref!!!!"

White didn't choose sides between Mayweather and Ortiz, he blasted Cortez.

"You can't blame the fighters. The ref is in there to stop that [expletive] from happening! That is the worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing EVER."

In his own sport, White has never been shy about going after judges or referees.

Frankly, everyone in the ring had a part in this mess, but clearly Cortez failed to do his job. The shocked look on his face says it all.

Floyd Mayweather, Larry Merchant Go Toe to Toe

HBO analyst Larry Merchant had some choice words for Floyd Mayweather after their post-fight interview.Just moments after Floyd Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion on Saturday night, another controversy erupted in the ring during Mayweather's post-fight interview with HBO's longtime boxing commentator Larry Merchant.

As he always does after big fights, Merchant stepped into the ring after Mayweather beat Ortiz and began to pepper Mayweather with tough questions. But these questions were tougher than most because the circumstances were unprecedented: Mayweather had just knocked Ortiz out at a point when the referee had appeared to call time out, and the fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas were loudly booing Mayweather, rather than celebrating his latest victory.

As Merchant's questions heated up, Mayweather became enraged.

"You never give me a fair shake. HBO needs to fire you," Mayweather screamed. "You don't know s--t about boxing."

The 80-year-old Merchant replied, "I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass."

(Editor's Note: The video below contains profane language and is NSFW.)

With that, Mayweather stormed off, and Merchant began to interview Ortiz, who was much more mild-mannered. But once the interview with Ortiz was over, Merchant returned to the subject of his own confrontation with Mayweather.

"I don't really think I could have kicked his ass 50 years ago, but I would have tried it," Merchant said.

Merchant added that he believed the real reason Mayweather cut the interview short is that he didn't want to face questions about why he has refused to fight Manny Pacquiao, who is widely regarded as the opponent with the best chance to hand Mayweather his first career loss.

"What happened? I think Floyd Mayweather knew that the next question was going to be about, Why don't you fight Pacquiao? That's still the question that will linger long after this fight," Merchant said.

If nothing else, the exchange between Merchant and Mayweather will bolster Merchant's reputation as a journalist who's not afraid to ask any question -- and bolster Mayweather's reputation as boxing's greatest villain.
